The Gocta Waterfall (Spanish: Catarata del Gocta), the third tallest free-leaping waterfall in the world after Angel Falls in Venezuela and Tugela Falls in South Africa is a perennial waterfall with two drops. Its existence was made public following an expedition made in 2005 by a German, Stefan Ziemendorff, with a group of Peruvian explorers. He stated that the total height was accurately measured at 771 metres (2,530 ft).

Gullfoss, Iceland

Gullfoss (English: Golden Falls) is a waterfall located in the canyon of Hvítá river in southwest Iceland. Gullfoss is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. The wide Hvítá rushes southward. About a kilometer above the falls it turns sharply to the left and flows down into a wide curved three-step “staircase” and then abruptly plunges in two stages (11 m and 21 m) into a crevice 32 m (105 ft) deep. The crevice, about 20 m (60 ft) wide, and 2.5 km in length, is at right angles to the flow of the river. As one first approaches the falls, the crevice is obscured from view, so that it appears that a mighty river simply vanishes into the earth.

Helmcken Falls, British Columbia Canada

Helmcken Falls is a 141 m (463 ft) waterfall on the Murtle River within the Wells Gray Provincial Park in British Columbia, Canada. The protection of Helmcken Falls was one of the major causes for the development of Wells Gray Provincial Park. The falls are named for John Sebastian Helmcken, a physician with the Hudson’s Bay Company who helped bring British Columbia into Canadian Confederation, but who never actually saw the falls himself.

Helmet Falls, British Columbia Canada

Helmet Falls has a total height of 1154 feet 352 meters and it is located in Canada, British Columbia, Kootenay National Park, Washmawapta Icefield. Helmet Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The headwaters of Helmet Creek come gushing out of the Washmawwapta Icefield, and almost immediately plunge over 1000 feet to the valley below. The falls actually consist of two streams, fed by two separate glaciers, which merge mid-fall, then drop over the second, smaller tier of the falls. The falls can only be reached via a 9 mile hike from the popular Vermilion Paint Pots.

Hidden Valley Falls (Thousand Foot Falls), Belize

Hidden Valley Falls has a total height of 1500 feet 457 meters and it is located in Belize, Cayo, San Ignacio, Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. Hidden Valley Falls is located in an area of Belize where a botanical oddity occurs. Mountain Pine Ridge is an area where fir trees cover the landscape, a phenomenon seen nowhere else in the world so close to the equator. Hidden Valley Falls drops off of this ridge. There is some evidence that suggests the actual drop is closer to 1600 feet, regardless of what the commonly used alternate name, Thousand Foot Falls, indicates.

High Force, England

High Force is a waterfall on the River Tees, near Middleton-in-Teesdale, Teesdale, County Durham (until 1974 part of Yorkshire), England. The waterfall is within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and European Geopark. Despite popular belief, it is not, at 21.5 metres (70 ft), the highest waterfall in England: Cautley Spout, in Cumbria’s Howgill Fells, is almost 180 metres (600 ft) high and Hardraw Force, in North Yorkshire, has an unbroken drop of 30 metres (100 ft).

Iguazu Falls, Brazil Argentina

Iguazu Falls, Iguassu Falls, or Iguaçu Falls (Portuguese: Cataratas do Iguaçu; Spanish: Cataratas del Iguazú; Guarani: Chororo Yguasu) are waterfalls of the Iguazu River located on the border of the Brazilian State of Paraná and the Argentine Province of Misiones. The falls divide the river into the upper and lower Iguazu. The Iguazu River starts at the city of Curitiba and runs for the most part of the course in Brazil and at the end at the border of Brazil and Argentina. The waterfall system consists of 275 falls along 2.7 kilometres (1.7 mi) of the Iguazu River. Some of the individual falls are up to 82 metres (269 ft) in height, though the majority are about 64 metres (210 ft). The Devil’s Throat (Garganta del Diablo in Spanish or Garganta do Diabo in Portuguese), a U-shaped, 82-meter-high, 150-meter-wide and 700-meter-long (490 by 2300 feet) cataract, is the most impressive of all, and marks the border between Argentina and Brazil. Two thirds of the falls are within Argentine territory. About 900 meters of the 2.7-kilometer length does not have water flowing over it. The edge of the basalt cap recedes only 3 mm (0.1 in) per year. The water of the lower Iguazu collects in a canyon that drains in the Paraná River, shortly downstream from the Itaipu Dam. The junction of the water flows marks the border between Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay.

Kaieteur Falls, Guyana

Kaieteur Falls is a high-volume waterfall on the Potaro River in central Guyana, Potaro-Siparuni region. It is located in Kaieteur National Park. It is 226 meters (741 ft) when measured from its plunge over a sandstone and conglomerate cliff to the first break. It then flows over a series of steep cascades that, when included in the measurements, bring the total height to 251 meters (822 ft). While many falls have greater height, few have the combination of height and water volume. This has given Kaieteur Falls the misleading label of “largest single drop” waterfall in the world which is often misinterpreted as “tallest single drop.” However, it is likely one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world. Kaieteur Falls is about five times higher than the more well known Niagara Falls and about two times the height of the Victoria Falls.
