CV Kumar's Adhe Kangal directed by debutant Rohin Venkatesan is a delicious thriller with a meaty, realistic plot and nicely fleshed out characters and not to forget a smart running time of 120 minutes. The film is engaging mainly due to the characterizations and subtle humor, which provides quality entertainment till the end.
Varun (Kalaiyarasan) is a visually challenged chef, who runs a PROFITABLE restaurant and even wins Best Entrepreneur Award for his achievements. For Varun, his parents and a journalist friend Sadhana (Janani Iyer) are the world and life moves well until he meets Deepa (Sshivada).
At first, Varun meets Deepa as a customer but later, they develop a liking for each other. At one point of time, Deepa confesses about a problem that she is facing due to the pending debt, which her dad has and Varun readily agrees to help. The twist in the tale is when Varun meets with an accident and gets back his vision but strangely Deepa goes missing.After unsuccessful attempts to find Deepa, Varun agrees to marry Sadhana but few days before the wedding, he gets to meet Deepa's dad, who says that the moneylender has kidnapped Deepa. The biggest strength of Adhe Kangal is that the director is very clear in his execution. Though the story takes place in small towns and the crime he has handled is quite topical. Introducing humour in a serious crime thriller has always worked and in here, Rohin has achieved it through Balasaravanan. The second half moves swiftly and is engaging than the first half.
Performance wise Kalaiyarasan has done a neat job and justifies his character while Sshivada Nair has a terrific opportunity here. She sinks her teeth into the character and surprises us. Janani Iyer looks very pretty and her matured romantic bit with Kalaiyarasan is enjoyable. It looks like Balasaravanan is in good form and here too he does not disappoint.
Technically too the film is quite good, the glossy cinematography of Ravivarman gives an ad film feel while Ghibran background score is a big plus. Overall, Adhe Kangal is a satisfying WATCH this weekend.
