Sabhaapathy  Review

Star Cast : Santhanam, MS Baskar, Preethi Varma
Director : Srinivasa Rao

Santhanam's recent film Sabhaapathy is a fantasy comedy-drama that is completely in the actor’s comfort zone except for the fact that the actor plays a stutter and exhibites a subtle performance.

The film begins with the voiceover of fate, it decides to play a drama in Sabhaapathy’s life.

Sabhaapathy is the son of a Tamil teacher (MS Baskar). From his childhood, Sabhaapathy’s only problem is stammering, he is often ridiculed and mocked by his friends, neighbors and as he grows, the shortcoming also affects his career. When fate throws him a bit of huge luck in the form of a box full of money, can Sabhaapathy overcome his difficulties and shine big?

The first half of the film is all about Santhanam’s problems that he undergoes in his routine life. The actor tries to play a subtle character without any over-the-top performance. The pre-intermission scene where he stages a funny stretch under the alcoholic influence brings the roof down. But the initial portions are not funny enough for a Santhanam film! The much-expected Pugazh’s comedy has also not worked and the heroine Preethi Varma can't act! However, the combination scenes between Santhanam and MS Baskar are sure to evoke good laughter in theaters.

The second half takes the fantasy route and it is all about whether Santhanam uses 20 crores. Just like Santhanam’s recent films like A1 and Dhilukku Dhuddu , Sabhaapathy also can be watched for the few peals of laughter here and there but the overall output is not extraordinary or compelling!

Technically, Sam CS is impressive with his background score but the songs are strictly average. The cinematography and editing are also functional and have nothing much to rave about.

To conclude, Sabhaapathy is a below-average comedy entertainer that can be watched for the hilarious comedy combination between  Santhanam and the MS Baskar!
