Rekka is Vijay Sethupathi's full fledged commercial potboiler with gravity defying stunts, multiple villains and bunch of stuntmen flying in the air. But if you can look beyond these over the top action sequences, Rekka might actually entertain you because director Rathna Siva has got an engaging screenplay and solid back story.
Siva (Vijay Sethupathi) helps all the love marriages in Kumbakonam area because his unintentional mistake during his childhood has shattered the dreams of an young couple, which still haunts him. Meanwhile, Siva kidnaps the bride of the local goon David (Harish Uttamane) as she is deeply in love with our hero's friend, which creates an enmity between the duo.
During the wedding ceremony of Siva's sister, David threatens that he will stop the marriage and orders him to kidnap Bharathi (Lakshmi Menon), daughter of Madurai's top politico. Bharathi has also been engaged to a powerful gangster in Coimbatore. Now Siva has to win this impossible battle against three deadly gangsters!
Director Rathna Siva must be a big fan of all the hit Telugu mass masala films. Though we are not sure how audiences going to accept Vijay Sethupathi bashing hundreds of henchmen, Rekka is a solid remake material in Tollywood!
Apart from the logic less stunt sequences, the romantic portion between Vijay Sethupathi and Lakshmi Menon is a huge let down. In fact, the girl who comes as the childhood crush of Siva looks prettier than Lakshmi Menon, who is bloated and sleepwalks throughout the film.
Leaving aside all the above said flaws, Rathna Siva has got a moving flashback and he exactly knows how to write the perfect lead for a stunt scene, also Vijay Sethupathi has the mettle to carry it on his broad shoulders. Another positive aspect about Rekka is all the actors including Kishore, KS Ravikumar, Harish Uttaman and Kabir Singh have justified their characters.
Imman's haunting Kannama number is a big plus for the film while composer scores big time with rerecording, not to forget the slick cuts of Praveen KL.
The bottom line is if you don't mind watching gravity defying stunts, Rekka might be an entertaining flick but for others it's just an average action entertainer.
