Tamil cinema crosses 50 releases in 2015, as B-O collapses!

At a time when Tamil films are falling like nine pins at the box-office, 10 new films are releasing on March 10! The box-office is at an all time low, with repeated failures in March. Meanwhile Tamil cinema will hit the fastest 50 releases by March 20.

None of the new releases are able to survive for more than three days. By Monday either the show gets cancelled or some other film is played. In fact many theatres in Tamil Nadu have reduced number of shows and some of them have closed down for renovation and repairs before the summer season starts in April.

The 10 new Tamil films due for release on March 20 are  Aaya Vada Sutta Kathai, Agathinai,  Iravum Pagalum, Kadavul Pathi Mrigam Pathi , Kallapadam,  Kaalakattam, Mooch, Patrai and Thilakar Vethu Vettu.

Abirami Ramanathan veteran exhibitor and distributor said: “I just cannot understand this madness going on. Some of the producers of these new releases have sold their property to get the film released.”

Ramanathan says that the gold rush started a few years back after low budget movies like Pizza, Naduvile Konjam Pakkathe Kannom made three to five times their investment.

The examination season and World Cup cricket fever has also eaten into box-office collections. And with almost 10 films with unknown star cast and directors releasing every week, the audiences are keeping away. The content of these films have also come in for criticism.
