‘Anegan’ marks the continuation of the hit combination of KV Anand and Harris Jeyaraj after their previous collaborations in movies like Ko, Ayan and Maatraan. Harris, who had got mixed reviews for his recent albums like ‘Yaan’, ‘Idhu Kathirvelan Kadhal’ has come up with six tracks for this album. Let us see how they have come out:
Danga Maari Oodhari
Singers: Dhanush, Gana Viji, Naveen Madhav
Lyrics: Rokesh
‘Ookadathu Pappadame meets Venaam Machan Venaam’! ‘Danga Maari Oodhari’ is tailormade for Dhanush to showcase his dance skills with the lyrics written in typical Madras dialect. The tune is constructed in a sensibility that would appeal to the masses. Dhanush does nothing wrong with the rendition but the real show stealer has got to be the accompanying trumpet-brass-nadhaswaram segment during the interludes(remember the trailer music?)
Aathadi Aathadi
Singers: Bhavatharani, Tippu, Dhanush, Abhay Jodhpurkar
Lyrics: Vairamuthu
Few seconds into the song and one could easily make out that ‘Aathadi Aathadi’ is just a plain imitation of ‘Innum Konjam Neram’ from Maryaan. That certainly dampens the mood of the song. The tune is soothing but that doesn’t help the number to stand out from the aforementioned song. Tippu sounds too sharp in certain places but the vocals are salvaged by the other three lead singers
Deivangal Ingae
Singers: Sriram Parthasarathy
Lyrics: Kabilan
‘Deivangal Ingae’ is template Harris all the way! The chorus portions add a certain gothic touch to the track but the ‘heard before feel’ haunts the tune in most places. The final half of the song sees Sriram Parthasarathy improvising in many places and owning the tune. A typical montage number!
Roja Kadale
Singers: Shankar Mahadevan, Chinmayi, Sunidhi Chauhan
Lyrics: Vairamuthu
The album’s most likeable song! ‘Roja Kadale’ is pretty similar to Harris’s previous composition ‘Vinnaithaandi Anbe’ from ‘Irandam Ulagam’ but the composer still keeps the tune zingy enough to grab the listener’s attention throughout the runtime. Shankar Mahadevan who reunites with Harris after Ghajini, sounds absolutely in prime form with the lyrics by Vairamuthu adding value to the song.
Thodu Vaanam
Singers: Hariharan, Shakthisree Gopalan
Lyrics: Vairamuthu
The first and foremost thing about this song that catches your attention is the mixing which is just tremendous. The interludes overridden with the progressive rock style deserves a mention. Hariharan’s voice might have lost its old texture but he still carries off the song brilliantly. The song is more of a rhythm based number with minimal arrangements and the Chorus is being put to good use throughout the number.
Yolo You Only Live Once
Singers: Shail Hada, Ramya NSK, Richard, Eden, MC Vickey
Lyrics: CS Amudhan
The most disappointing song in the album! ‘YOLO’ sounds rather rhymes-like with the tune appearing bland in most places. There was a certain hype associated with this song as it has lyrics by CS Amudhan but the tune disappoints. The composer has tried a Bob Marley-ish reggae(‘Hey Lamba’ from ‘Yaan’ also had a similar style) but the experimentation hasn’t fetched desired results.
On the whole, ’Anegan’ is another regular Harris Jeyaraj fare where the tunes keep giving a déjàvu to the listeners. Anegan is guaranteed to be shot in rich locales that would help the songs to get a wider reach. While songs like ‘Roja Kadale’, ’Thodu Vaanam’ & ‘Danga Maari’ impress, the remaining songs fall flat making it an album not on the same lines of ‘Ko’ and ‘Maatraan’.
