Gethu-Audio Review

Cast: Udayanidhi Stalin,Amy Jackson,Vikranth,Sathyaraj
Music: Harris Jayaraj
Direction: Thirukumaran

Album Analysis:
Adiye Adiye
Singers: Karthik, Shalini
Typical Harris song! “Adiye Adiye” is a very contemporary number with familiar backgrounds. Karthik leads the song from the front with his vocals easily hitting high notes. The song is racy & has signature Harris Jayaraj written all over it. One could notice that the background groove is almost continuous & the composer scores off in the second interlude where there is one superb piece of extended usage of whistle. Gives you a ‘heard before’ feel but still, catchy!

Thillu Mullu
Singers: Naresh Iyer, Ranina Reddy
Although ‘Thillu Mullu’ is eerily similar to some of the yesteryear tracks from Harris Jayaraj, it has a catchy loop and the chorus portions add a fresh sense of curiosity for the listeners. The first interlude is ‘Nee Sunno’-ish! Naresh dominates the vocals department with able support from Ranina. Trademark Harris Jayaraj!

Yevanda Ivan
Singers: MC Vickey, Sharmila
‘Yevanda Ivan’ is like the hybrid of the rap portions from ‘Aga Naga’ fused with the arrangements of Thuppaki’s rerecording. MC Vickey who has been in good form of late delivers a neat rap but the tune is visual adhering. Would work if used along with proper visuals!

Thaen Kaatru
Singers: Haricharan, Shashaa Tirupathi
Harris clones ‘Pookale Satru Oivedungal’ in every sense! The similarities in the tunes, arrangements are shocking to the say the least. However, much as the case was with the former, ‘Thaen Kaatru’ is pleasant to listen to with soft instruments and good lyrical content.

Mutta Bajji
Singers: Gana Vinoth, Anthony Dasan, Marana Gana Viji, Ebisa
The tune is constructed in a sensibility that would appeal to the masses. Unlike ‘Danga Maari’ or ‘Anjala’, there is no standout factor to help the rendition lift the spirits. The arrangements are almost Anjala-ish. The accompanying percussions somehow keep the interest rate among the listeners.

On the whole, Harris Jayaraj doesn’t seem to come out of his stock tunes zone. The songs that sound catchy are highly nostalgic where as the songs  that sound different aren’t that impressive. The Udhay-Harris combo has delivered better album in the past.

Gethu censored with ‘U’ certificate

On Friday (Jan 10) all films due for Pongal were censored. The last of the lot was Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Gethu, which got a U censor certificate .

Among all the four Pongal releases, Sivakarthikeyan’s Rajini Murugan  Vishal’s Kathakali and now Gethu has got U certificates.  But Bala’s Tharai Thappattai has got ‘A’ certificate.

As all the four films have cleared censors, their release dates are almost confirmed and theatres will be soon scheduling the show timings. All the four are scheduled for a January 14 release.

Reportedly, Rajini Murugan’s sudden postponement from December 4 to Pongal has created a lot of confusions in the trade. A huge competition is going on between the Pongal releases to get prime screens and shows.

Gethu Review

Director: Thirukumaran
Cast: Udhay, Amy, Sathyaraj, Vikranth

Thirukumaran’s Gethu is a poor cousin of his guru AR Murugadoss films. The problem is that if Murugadoss thinks big and execute it in a large canvass, his former assistant has limited ideas.

Sethu (Udhay) is a librarian, who is a teetotaler and pure vegetarian. Life goes well till Sethu’s intrepid father (Sathyaraj) earns the enmity of a local wine shop owner (Mime Gopi, IM Vijayan). When Mime Gopi is found dead, police finds Sathyaraj’s ring in his hand and arrests him. In order to clear his father’s name, Sethu has to find the real murderer and luckily a cigarette lighter from police evidence gives him the much needed bait to find the killer.

At one point of time, Sethu finds out that Bull (Vikranth), a sniper is the real murderer and his motto is to kill India’s most wanted scientist. Now Sethu must stop Bull and bring him before the law to save his father…

As a story, Gethu is definitely interesting to read and listen but there is hardly any sparkling moments in the film. As said earlier, the crime elements are very silly that we do not feel the thrills and instead things move at a leisure pace and tests our patience.

Sathyaraj has once again given his best as a fearless father while Udhay has tried his hands to become an action hero. Although one of the fight sequences is convincing, Udhay has to work hard to be a convincing action hero. Amy looks cute as usual but in this film, she looks alien while Vikranth looks menacing as the baddie.

Gethu’s biggest strength is Sukumar’s glossy visuals, which has given international feel to the film. Harris’ songs are hummable and catchy. Overall, Gethu is an average film from Thirukumaran, which seriously tests your patience!

No tax exemption for Udhay’s Gethu!

Tax exemption woes continue for Udhayanidhi Stalin, as his Pongal release, Gethu has also been rejected entertainment tax waiver in Tamil Nadu.

The producer turned actor is already disappointed with the negative reviews and posting pictures of parking occupancy of various theaters screening Gethu to show that his film is performing well, despite harsh criticisms.

Udhay has posted screenshots on why the tax exemption committee has rejected the film and apparently, they have mentioned that Gethu is not a Tamil title. The actor has also posted a picture from a Tamil dictionary on Twitter and according to that, Gethu is definitely a Tamil word.

Udhay is expected to approach the court to get the deserved tax waiver for his film.

Udhay's 'Gethu' finally gets tax exemption!

Recently Tamil Nadu government rejected tax exemption for Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Gethu by saying that the title is not a Tamil word.

Against the denial, Udhay has moved the Madras High Court and Honorable Justice Duraiswamy has now ordered the state government to grant tax exemption for the film from its release date.

This is not the first time that the government denying tax exemption for Udhay’s film but the producer turned actor keep approaching the court and comes out victorious at every given time.

Apparently, the reason  provided by the state government appointed committee for rejecting tax exemption for Gethu is that the makers should have used ‘K’ instead of ‘G’  but the Honorable Justice refused to accept the argument.
