Yaakkai Review
Convoluted, and never true to its own logic, the twists in Yaakkai felt underwhelming and boring. It looks like director Kuzhandhai Velappan had decided to establish a gender equality in Yaakkai. When it comes to sketching ‘Loosu Ponnu’ characters, Tamil filmmakers are past masters but for a change, in Yaakkai the hero is a Loosu Paiyyan. Sorry to say this, Krishna’s idea of bringing charm with childish mannerisms and silly faces is absurd and it only irritates us.
Kathir (Krishna) sees Kavitha (Swathi) in a bus stop, as she cuddles a kid and it is love at first sight for our hero. He clicks her pics from his camera from an autorickshaw and even sings a duet. Perhaps Kuzhandhai Velappan wanted Krishna-Swathi romance on par with Suriya-Asin episode from Ghajini but to be honest, things are lifeless and below par here!
However, Yaakkai opened with a promising frame, the red and green light of a hospital hoarding continuously flicker and the shades fall on a BMW car, which is pushed from a multi-storey hospital building! But right after that, there isnt one noticeable scene in the film. For Prakash Raj, the cool cop character was a cakewalk but the director wasted his role with a silly ending while Guru Somasundaram was a complete miscast as the sophisticated antagonist. He struggles hard to mouth English dialogues and whatever he does in the film appears artificial.
Throughout the film, the director takes the audiences for granted with amateurish writing and execution. Except for the visuals and Yuvan’s score nothing really works. To conclude, this is nothing but clumsy writing and execution. Better to stay away!
