This is a type of camouflage called counter-shadow, which makes it difficult for their predators and prey to see from all angles. When the penguins are in the water, their white chests hide from view from below against the lighter skies that come through the water's surface. From below the white belly of a penguin mixes with the bright surface of the ocean, while the dark back of a penguin disappears into the faint blackness of the ocean below. From above, their black back helps them blend with the dark, deep sea water beneath them. At sea, the penguins really need this natural camouflage from many predators, including seals, sea lions and killer whales. So the color of the penguin is a kind of camouflage :) :)
