Overview of Popeye

Do you remember the funny cartoon character called Popeye and his girlfriend Olive Oyl and the villain of the story Bluto, the terrific love triangle? Bluto always try to impress olive and troubles Popeye a lot. Popeye always caught into the trap made by Bluto and Popeye finds himself in a drastic situation from where escaping is like impossible and suddenly a can full of spinach falls from Popeye’s pocket, he gulped it and got the supernatural power to fight with all difficulties. Somehow this is all about the stories of the Popeye the sailor man’s tale. In different episode the environment changes but the spinach can and Popeye’s invariable attacking approach to Bluto remains the same. I know now you can easily figure out the famous fictional character of Popeye.

Elzie Crislar Segar created the character of Popeye. The Popeye character first featured in the daily King Features comic strip Thimble Theatre on January 17th 1929. In 1933, Max and Dave Fleischer studios took the Thimble theatre characters. Popeye made his first film in Popeye the sailor, on 1933. First time Popeye’s music was composed. Sammy Lerner wrote the famous song “I’m Popeye the Sailor Man. I am what I Yam. This song became very popular among listeners because of its simplicity. Beginning of the first few cartoons, the movie’s music consists of an instrumental of “The sailor’s Hornpipe”. After that vocal variation “Strike up the Band (here comes a sailor),” replaced the phrase “for Popeye the sailor”. Last of all “I yam what I yam” tune was also used as the theme song.

The original Popeye character was voiced by William “Billy” Costello, also known as “Red Pepper Sam”. By the blessing of the animation series Popeye’s stories became very famous even more than the comic stories. One survey reveals that in 1930 the Popeye’s character was more popular than Mickey Mouse and 1938 s polls told that Popeye was the most popular Hollywood cartoon character.

Popeye’s character not only famous among the children but also eighties also. The funny combination between Popeye and his girlfriend olive always attracts the cartoon lovers. Especially children like Popeye’s funny way of eating spinach, singing the song “I’m Popeye the Sailor Man. I am what I Yam.” The Popeye character was depicted in the story as it can fight with any difficult problems; it has strong sense of investigation, gigantic power after eating the spinach and also dies hard romantic who listen every word of his girlfriend. No one can rebuke or scold Popeye except his girlfriend olive.

After Segar’s death in 1938, many other artists are appointed to draw the strip. Later Tom Sims continued writing Thimble Theatre’s strips. Bela Zaboly efficiently controlled the artwork during Sim’s time. After Sim Segendorf wrote and drew the daily strip until 1986 and continued it until 1994. From 1986 to 1992, the daily strip was written and drawn by Bobby London. On January 1, 2009 since after the death of Segar, the Popeye character carbonized in different countries, but the real copyright is reserved to United States because Segar was an employee of King Features Syndicate.

Popeye is the most popular cartoon character from last couple of decades. Firstly in comic strips, then on television, as an animated cartoon show, as well as in movies. This amazing fictional cartoon series and its other character gained lots of love from the public. Fictional characters of this comic strip such as Popeye the sailorman, his girl friend Olive and her family, Bluto, Olive’s cousin Sweet Pea, of course, who can forget “the Spinach” that brought awesome super-natural powers to Popeye, and all the sailors of Popeye’s family; all these cartoon characters have been serving some unique and amazing entertainment to children as well as people of all age groups from over the years.

Popeye the sailorman is the actual fiction of a great cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar, who makes Popeye’s first appearance on 17th January of year 1929. Mr. Segar introduced Popeye and his Spinach in the comic strip named “Thimble theatre”. This column was published daily in the “King Features” that was owned by “the Heart Corporation” and well known for distributing comic strips and editorial cartoons to newspapers and magazines of all over the world. Later he introduced several other characters of this fictional cartoon series like Sweet Pea, Olive, and Blunto etc.

That was the tenth year of Thimble Theatre when Segar brought Popeye the sailorman and his associated cartoon characters into existence through a comic strip. In 1930′s king features thoroughly focused over this project and after few years “Popeye” became a title of its own comic strip. After the death of Mr. Segar in 1938, the Thimble theatre continued this amazing comic strip with new artists and writers who brought lots of fun in the series of Popeye the sailorman. These changes of cartoonists prove revolutionary for the corporation as the comic strip gained a lot of popularity due to some amazing stories and cartooning-art.

The Popeye comic strip started its journey from a newspaper named “New York Journal”, which was operated by King Features Syndicate. Well’ the initial journey of Popeye that sailor man was quite interesting, because this character was introduced by Segar in a minor role. The comedy cum adventure comic strip was actually started as a story of Olive Oyl and Harold Hamgravy- her boyfriend, which also featured Castor Oyl- the enterprising brother of Olive. Some frequent appearances were also made by Olive’s parents Nana and Cole oil. As Popeye became more famous and loved by reader than other characters, the comic strip started to focus over him; thus, he got the lead role in it.

Major characters of Popeye comic strip, Bluto and Sweet pea, made their first appearance into this strip in year 1932 and 1933 respectively. Bluto or Brutus was planned as one-time character named Bluto the terrible by Segar, but Fleischer Studios liked his role, and adapted him as a villain in their animated cartoon shows. The concept of Sweet pea was received by Segar in a mail that he introduced as a foundling baby later. Later comic strip included so many elements and characters, which have been entertaining people around the globe from last eight decades, and so on.

Popeye The Cartoon

A period of eight decades, and just one comic series, this really is a big achievement for Popeye the cartoon. Generations have gone by, but this cartoon show has never stopped entertaining people. Popeye the sailorman, Sweet pea, Olive, and Bluto are the all time favorite characters, which brought some kind of magic over the television screen as well as on 70MM screen. Popeye was created by E.C. Segar as his fiction for a comic strip named Thimble Theatre, which was associated with King Features Syndicate and published on New York Journal.

Fleischer Studio showed its interest for launching an animated cartoon series on television in the year 1932. They did an agreement with King Features in the month of November of that year. According to this agreement, the Fleischer Studio had the right to use all fictional characters of Thimble Theatre in its animated cartoon TV-show. Thus, how the era of this amazing cartoon series started in year 1933. The production house “Paramount Pictures” released this cartoon series on TV which was its main series of this production house over the next 25 years. As the animated Popeye dominated the TV world and turned out to be a sensation over the other animated cartoon series on television, it reflected the Popeye comic strip’s popularity, as well. There was a poll organized for Hollywood’s most popular animated character in 1938, and Popeye the sailorman topped the charts.

In each episode of Popeye, he or Olive was put into a situation that appeared to be almost hopeless then eventually he got Spinach from somewhere that brought him some incredible power.By virtue of this power, he becomes a super-human and gets himself or Olive out of that situation through an amazing way. This was all about a general overview of every episode of Popeye the sailorman, but the remarkable thing about this cartoon series is that it always comes with some different stories and fun with its other characters.

Paramount pictures and Fleischer Studios got separated by the mid of 1941, so the reorganized studio was renamed as Famous Studios. Till 1957, they short 125 episodes of the Popeye series, in which the remarkable ones were those made after Second World War. The cartoon characters were also got featured in the war theme, in these episodes; he was fighting against other rival countries.

In the year 1985 at South Korea, the Popeye’s black & white cartoon shows were retraced into color, but those shorts were available only in early years of the last decade of 20th century. In the year 2001, the historical personality of animation- Mr. Jerry Beck, brought Popeye to the “Cartoon Network“- a famous cartoon channel. In his extraordinary supervision a new animation series “the Popeye show” starts spreading magic over the TV screens again. Warner home videos also made an announcement in the year 2006, to release all theatrical production released from 1933 to 1957 of Popeye cartoon, in colored version.

The best thing about Popeye the sailor man cartoon series is this no matter the owners or production houses keep on changing over these 8 decades, but the characters like Olive, Sweet pea, Bluto remained favorites among the people.

POPEYE-THE SAILOR MAN

Among all the famous & beloved cartoon characters, Popeye can be named among the top standards. Since the day of very creation, this pipe-puffing sailor has become a global name. This cartoon character has encouraged millions of young hearts to eat spinach eagerly in order to achieve the incredible strength like Popeye. The confusion about spinach was created right from the beginning. Is the Spinach a particular type of magical herb which gives unlimited strength? Or the cartoon-lover children all over the world are actually worshipping a hero who is addicted to marijuana, a forbidden weed? However, there are only circumstantial evidences. But if all of those are added together, a clear indication can be achieved which tells that the strength-giving Spinach is nothing but a metaphor of the famous forbidden weed – marijuana!!

Popeye was first created by famous cartoonist Elzie Segar in the year 1929 and after then many artists and writers helped to curve this famous cartoon character. Popeye was not the central character right from the birth; rather he was first evolved as a small character in the comic strip ‘Thimble Theatre’. This comic strip describes the adventurous journeys of Olive Oyl, Castor & Ham Gravy. In a particular overseas voyage, there was the entry of Popeye who was hired as a sailor. Very soon Popeye collected importance in this comic strip. Within a year, Popeye became the new sweetheart of Olive Oyl replacing Ham Gravy. The comic no longer remained ‘Thimble Theatre’, rather became the comic of Popeye, the sailor man. This comic included Wimpy three years later and also the sweet pea baby a few years after that. At the beginning, the infinite strength of Popeye did not include any explanation. But later, on the basis of some ongoing jokes, the spinach was made the source of this energy.

Popeye did not refrain himself in the boundary of the comic books. Gradually this sailor character gathered much attention and popularity in the animated cartoon shows. After the death of Segar, Spinach became indispensible part in every plots of the adventure of Popeye. With the consumption of Spinach, there happened a magical swift in the plot and the enemies of Popeye get destroyed by the infinitely powerful Popeye. The original comic by Segar was much more complex with a huge number of interesting characters and there were also different adult jokes. But in the later cartoon versions, Popeye’s adventures become short, much simple and also suitable for viewing by the children.

The identity of Spinach raised much controversy from the beginning of this comic. In the 1920′s & 30′s ‘Spinach’ was a common word for marijuana. Its best evidence was the famous ‘Spinach Song’ recorded by the popular jazz band Julia Lee & her boyfriends. There was also a rumor then that the intake of marijuana could make a person super powerful, even resistant from the bullets. This rumor could be a good reason for the evolution of Spinach. Whatever may be the source or identity, Spinach became a craze among all the cartoon-lover children in the world.

The Origin of Popeye

If you are a parent of a small kid crazy about Popeye, you probably know who is. There are millions of kids along with people from older generations who are loyal fans of this unsung hero who is celebrating his diamond jubilee this year. It goes to the credit of Elzie Crisler Segar who conceived of a comic strip where the central character was a short, balding, one eyed sailor having no teeth. He was Popeye, an ugly man with a golden heart and who always smoked pipe. It is hard to conceive of a man like Popeye to be accepted as a hero in today’s’ times. Popeye used to mutter to himself and was shown as a frustrated man though he was a man of great morality. Popeye the sailor man is the comic created by Segar that enjoys tremendous popularity even after 75 years of its launch in February 1929.

Every episode of the cartoon series ends with Popeye singing the famous song I’m Popeye the sailor man…….. Pom Pom. Thimble Theater is the actual name of the strip that was published in newspapers from 1919 onwards, and Popeye as the central character appeared only ten years later in 1929. It is a fact that is hard to believe, but not many are aware of this fact that Olive Oyl’s family was looking for a sailor and Popeye was hired because of his abilities. Popeye was a character so loved by the audiences that he became the central character leaving all previous ones behind. Olive soon became his girlfriend and Popeye is seen fighting with Bluto, another sailor, trying to impress Olive. Bluto is double the size of Popeye and beats Popeye easily. It is when Pope is seen losing the fight does he take out a can of spinach. As soon as he gulps down the content of the can, he gets instant strength and muscle power, using which he overcomes Bluto’s strength.

If Popeye is ugly as a hero, Olive is not far behind, flat as a paper and having a pickle shaped nose. She is a girl who is gullible and falls to the tricks and antics of Bluto and in every episode, Popeye has to save her from the clutches of Bluto. If Olive is Popeye’s love, the cartoon series also has a small baby called Sweat Pea whom people mistake as the child of Popeye and Olive.

Take a pause and think why we are talking so much about Popeye and the cartoon series Popeye the sailor man. Yes, you guessed it right. 2012 happens to be diamond jubilee year of Popeye and the event is being celebrated in different parts of the world to honor this unsung hero who makes use of, not any super power but the super food spinach to gain muscle power and strength. Honoring Popeye is equivalent to making people aware of benefits of spinach to make them take up eating spinach. Spinach contains all essential vitamins and minerals required by our bodies.

How Popeye and Olive Met

In the comic and cartoon world, this is certainly the year of Popeye the sailor man. Popeye is celebrating his diamond jubilee this year having been launched way back in 1929. Popeye is a short, balding, toothless sailor and a very unlikely hero if one looks at him from today’s perspective. But then, the heroine of the series, Olive, who is the girlfriend of Popeye is also very different as she is as thin as a paper card and much taller than Popeye. She is a fickle minded girl and often falls to the guiles of Bluto, another sailor who happens to an adversary of Popeye. It is left to Popeye’s super strength (after consuming a can of spinach) to rescue her from the clutches of Bluto. Though every time the film ends with when Popeye manages to beat Bluto, millions of fans around the world watch the film avidly to see Popeye sing a song at the end of the film.

However, not many know that the creator of the series, E. C. Segar, introduced Popeye into the series as a bit of a character in 1929 though the series was already running for the last 10 years with the focus on Oyl family with Olive and her brother Castor Oyl. Ham Gravy was the beau of Olive and two were looking for a sailor to crew a ship to rob a casino when they go up to Popeye asking if he was a sailor. Popeye replies saying Ja think I’m a cowboy. This is the first time Popeye and Olive meet. Segar did not intend to continue with Popeye longer, and when Popeye disappeared from the series later, angry readers wanted him back, he was loved so much. Slowly but surely, Popeye himself became the central character of the strip getting rid of most of the earlier characters. Rest is history as the story in every episode from this meeting onwards revolved around the antics and fight between Popeye and Bluto and the love story of Popeye and Olive.

Soon, the creator focused upon Popeye, Bluto, and Olive, and also added a few new characters such as Sweat Pea, the adopted son of Popeye, and Wellington Wimpy. Wimpy happens to be a lover of hamburgers and a strong friend of Popeye. Popeye soon made an appearance in movies when Popeye the sailor man was seen in theaters.

Popeye soon became Olive’s new boyfriend though Olive remained as fickle minded as ever and was seen getting impressed by the guiles of Bluto. Popeye was shown fighting with Bluto to save his girlfriend from his clutches.

The reason why there is so much talk about Popeye and other characters of the cartoon series is that the series is in its 75th year of launch and the event is being celebrated in different parts of the world with Popeye memorabilia being sold that includes soft toys and posters of this great unsung hero of our times. The real motive behind this effort is to popularize consumption of spinach in the country.

The Theme Song of Popeye

(http://popeye.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/The-Theme-Song-of-Popeye.png) (http://www.friendstamilchat.com)

Among the most famous cartoon shows and characters we all know, Popeye is one of the most attractive and favored by the children as well as by adults. In cartoon shows of television, in various comic books, even in movies Popeye has appeared for several times and thus take a step towards our heart and memory. Now, Popeye is not only famous for its special quotes like – “I yam what I yam and that’s all what I yam”, but also for the theme song that had been created for Popeye. The theme song uses to describe the characters of Popeye in brief and thus makes his story more attractive and interesting to us. In fact, it also helps to build up the cartoon shows as well as the cartoon movies and live action movies of Popeye over the theme song. And for such a famous cartoon character like Popeye, it is really important to create a song that will attract people more towards it, and thus making it more popular. Basically, a theme song expresses all about the cartoon character, and thus it is really essential. For all these reasons, like many other famous cartoon characters, Popeye also have a theme song, which was created, written, composed as well as designed by Sammy Lerner back in the year 1933, the early ages of Popeye.

This theme song was designed for the Fleischer Studios first television cartoon shows on Popeye and after that the song has become an inseparable part of the cartoon character of Popeye.

A Sailor’s hornpipe is often used before playing the actual music of the theme song to create an environment likely to be present for the actual song. The theme song was named as “I’m Popeye, the Sailor Man” and is still known as that. The siren sound of the song is one of the major attractions which is created through the pipe of Popeye and makes the tune funny and more laughing for the children. There are some doubts about the originality of the song as some of the historian and analysts say that the tunes of the song may be slightly adapted from some songs of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta, named the Pirates of Penzance. However, there is a significant doubt in this topic, and thus this has not yet been decided that whether the Popeye theme song is completely original or, not.

The cover of the theme song was being performed by an American Pop band, named Face to Face, and the song was included in the tribute album, produced by Ralph Sall and the album is named Saturday Morning: Cartoons’ Greatest Hits. This album is produced for MCA Records and the Popeye theme song cover was included in it in the year 1995. This proves the vast popularity of Popeye as well as his theme song. It has become a symbol of Popeye these days, and now the song pulls up more crowds towards the shows of Popeye. So, one can easily tell that the creation of the theme song of Popeye is really a very important step towards its glory.

Why is Popeye a Sailor

Millions of people around the world are big fans of Popeye the sailor man, a cartoon series being telecast on TV in all parts of the world. As the name of the series indicates, Popeye is a sailor which is not very surprising as the character was conceived by the creator of the cartoon series way back in 1929 when sailor and seas held great importance in the world. However, the reason why Popeye, the central character of the series that started 10 years back and concentrated upon Olive Oyl and her family, has been shown a sailor is because Olive Oyl and her beau required crew for a ship they had taken on rent for a special purpose, and met Popeye and hired him as a sailor for the ship.

Popeye seems to be the most unlikely hero in a cartoon series especially when other characters seem to be smart and attractive with some even possessing super powers. He is short, balding, one eyed, toothless, illiterate sailor who is always muttering something to himself and is frustrated with life in general. However, he has a heart of gold and no questions can be raised about his morality. But no less unlike a heroine is Olive, his girlfriend who is thin as a board, taller than Popeye, and a gullible girl who falls to the guiles of Bluto, adversary of Popeye. Bluto is taller and stronger than Popeye and impresses Olive with his muscle power. Popeye, when he feels he cannot overcome the brute strength of Bluto, takes out a can of spinach and gulps down all its contents. He instantly gains super strength and muscle power to beat Bluto and save his girlfriend Olive.

The creator of the series, E. C. Segar chose spinach as the source of power for his hero as spinach was talked about a lot in those days as a rich source of iron. However, Segar used spinach as a weapon for Popeye as he believed it to be an abundant source of vitamin A, or beta carotene, as it is scientifically known. Beta carotene is known to provide instant strength and muscle power. So as soon as Popeye empties a can of spinach, he develops strength to beat Bluto, a man double his size. There is a cute looking baby called Sweat Pea in the series who many believe to be Popeye’s and Olive’s kid which is wrong as he is a kid Popeye found on his door step as an orphan.

But why so much talk about Popeye, his antecedents, and all other characters in the comic series? This is because 2012 is the diamond jubilee year of the series introduced by E. C. Segar in 1929 and the world is celebrating the 75th anniversary of this unsung hero. There is another motive and that is to popularize purchase and consumption of spinach, which is considered to very beneficial for human strength. This is why Popeye memorabilia is being sold in different parts of the world.

Who are Popeye Characters

Those who just love to watch the antics of Popeye and his constant tussle with Bluto, can easily count all the characters of the cartoon film on fingers. The third central character of the comic strip is of course Olive Oyl, the tall and super thin girl friend of Popeye the sailor man. She plays the role of a girl who is not sure about things in life and so she vacillates between Popeye and Bluto as Bluto seems to be stronger than Popeye. Taking help of spinach to overcome the might of Bluto who is bigger and stronger, Popeye finally beats Bluto and the episode ends with Popeye singing his trademark song, Popeye the sailor man.

There are some more characters in the cartoon film series that come and go and they are not that significant from the point of view of the main story of the film. Popeye found a small baby outside his doorstep and adopted him. The name of the baby is Sweat Pea and he amazingly resembles Popeye. Popeye also has four nephews that are named Poopeye, Pupeye, Peepeye, and Pipeye. Wimpy is the name of the close friend of Popeye who is seen asking for a hamburger all the time.

But this is information that is readily available on the net or one can get as soon as he watches a few episodes of the cartoon movie series. What is the need for asking the names of Popeye characters today after so many years? I will let you an inside secret. This is the diamond jubilee year of the launch of Popeye the sailor man and being celebrated in different parts of the world where Popeye memorabilia, toys and merchandise will be sold to people in a bid to honor an unsung hero who is not a super hero neither does make use of any hard weapons to gain muscle strength and power. In fact, his only weapon is cans of spinach that he gulps down every time he finds that the task on hand is difficult and beyond his means. This is what makes him so very special, and today this universal hero is being used to make people remember that Mother Nature has provided us with super foods like spinach to remain fit and healthy. These are times when people in the country are struggling to remain fit, being obese and complaining of ailments. By including spinach in our diet, which is a wonder food easily available in all parts of the world, and that too cheaply, we can ensure that we provide all necessary nutrients to our bodies and remain stress free.

Whenever one thinks of spinach, he is forced to think of Popeye, such is the strong association of the two. Promoting vegetarianism, especially eating spinach is the main motive behind this campaign of selling Popeye goods. People are taking part in this campaign with zeal and it is hoped that this exercise will increase spinach consumption around the world.

Who is Bluto?

Bluto is one of the leading characters of the famous comic series, Popeye the sailorman, created by Elzie Crisler Segar. Segar introduced this character in 1932; after three years of the introduction of Popeye, the sailorman into the series. The entire comic strip is an eventual fiction which had been continuously published by various authors and artists of the king features; even after the death of Segar. The cartoon series was earlier named as Thimble Theatre, which was later renamed as ‘Popeye’.

Bluto is also called Brutus, is the competitor of the sailorman. He wants to impress, olive oyl; the girlfriend of the leading character of the cartoon film. This character is portrayed by Paul L. Smith in live action film while Alec Baldwin portrayed it in the animated series. It is the funniest character of the whole imaginary story, which often plans to defeat its opponent anyway. It is even not exactly cleared by the cartoon film that who is stronger; Popeye the sailorman or Brutus. Many a time, Brutus has been shown to kidnap Olive for catching her attention, but Popeye rescues her from his trap every time with the help of his power.

Popeye is imaged as a powerful sailorman who restore its energy by consuming spinach frequently. Bluto is represented with the muscular body and strong appearance. Sometimes, he becomes capable of beating the leading sailorman; surprisingly. His voice is very loud, harsh with some bear like growling sound while talking. He is severely attracted to the girlfriend of his enemy and wishes to win her love by knocking down his lover.

Popeye, the sailorman is very intelligent who works on practical and eventually useful plans. On the other hand, Brutus is a foolish fellow to work without any planning. His thoughtlessness is one of the most comedian features of him. He has been even knocked down by sweet pea, the foundling of the sailorman. Many a time, he seems to be stronger than the sailorman; even if he eats spinach. While, on other occasions; he tends to match the sailorman equally in power. Popeye becomes helpless to beat him either his wittiness or strength. Thus, all these different situations leave a consistency behind about the more powerful guy among both the sailors. The whole story moves around this scenario of Brutus, Olive and Popeye the sailorman.

Moreover, the fun in to the story is incorporated by the funny representation of flop planning of Bluto regarding the will of knocking down the sailorman. In addition, his foolish intension of kidnapping the girl friend of the sailorman also shows funny comedy for the viewers. Sometimes, he plans to steal the can of spinach of the sailorman so that he cannot gain more power by consuming it. This makes the sailorman appear weaker before Brutus, in some episodes of the fictional cartoon series. Many a times, sweet pea creates interruption in the wicked intention of brutus. The scenario of the stronger sailor has never been cleared in the live movie by its creators. The reason behind this fact is to secure the interest of viewers to discover the latest situation in each show. Sweet pea is a baby character of this animated fiction, which has been represented as the beloved guy of the sailorman.

Who is Bluto in Popeye?

This is a question people living in a remote corner of the world can ask what with the comic strip of Popeye the sailor man and its animated avatar being telecast in all parts of the world for the last so many decades. For the benefit of all those who are really unaware of the central character Bluto of this film, he is the villain of the series who is all the time posing trouble for the hero Popeye and trying to impress his girlfriend Olive. Bluto is a sailor just like Popeye and perhaps stronger and bigger than our poor hero who is short, ugly, and always smoking cigar. But hero has to win and this the creator has ensured by giving him super strength and muscle power through spinach, which is a wonder food used by people all over the world. As Bluto is stronger than Popeye and he cannot beat him in a one to one fight, Popeye has to gulp a can of spinach every time he feels he is losing the battle against the villain. The small baby shown in the series sometimes is not Popeye’s baby. His name is sweat pea and belongs to some relative of the sailor.

Why are we talking so much about Bluto? Because Bluto is only symptomatic of all the ailments and diseases that a super food like spinach is capable of defeating and saving people from all the trouble and medication they are forced to take to cure themselves. Spinach is one food item that has all the essential nutrient we need on a daily basis to fulfill the requirements of our bodies. There is no other food source on our planet that is more nutrient dense than spinach. All vitamins, all minerals, you name them and they are there in the green, leafy vegetable that is very versatile as a food item as it can be eaten raw in salads, boiled and turned into smoothies or taken in as a soup. The vegetable has long been proved as beneficial for people to gain muscle power and to regain lost strength. This is precisely why spinach soup is recommended by doctors after surgeries and for patients recuperating in hospitals. This is possible because of rich iron and beta carotene content in spinach.

We do not know about many important metals and elements that are found in traces in our bodies but are essential for our well being. We never know when their quantities in our bodies go down to make use fall prey to various ailments. This is why it is important to include spinach in our daily diet as it fulfills our requirements of these metals and elements.

Though spinach is believed to have originated in Asia, especially Persia, it has today spread to all parts of the world and being used to provide strength working as a food item that is so rich in nutrients. This is one food item that happens to be the most researched one in the world.

Popeye vs. Bluto: the Fights Where We Knew the End

Those of us who have grown up watching Popeye the sailor man know how exciting it was to see a lean and thin Popeye take on his adversary and competitor Bluto to woo Olive, the tall girl who eventually fell for the charms and power of Popeye. The secret behind the muscle power and strength of Popeye was ascribed to abundance of beta carotene in spinach, or so the creator of the comic strip believed when the series was introduced way back in 1929.

Spinach is Nature’s gift to mankind and it is difficult to find another so easily available food source that can classify as a super food in this age of pollution and adulteration. The dark green leafy plant contains abundance of iron and beta carotene to make us strong and powerful. However, it is also a treasure house of all essential nutrients like minerals and vitamins. Yes, it is low on calorie count, but if one compares this amazing food source, he finds that there is none to beat spinach in terms of variety and quantity of nutrients per calorie. The long list of nutrients just goes on and on. Magnesium, potassium, selenium, calcium, you name it, spinach has it. It is not just minerals but all necessary vitamins like vitamin K, Vitamin A, vitamin B, folate, vitamin B6, iron, vitamin E, zinc, copper, fibers, niacin. Even omega fatty acids, considered essential for human beings, are found in rich quantities in spinach.

Coming back to the tile Popeye vs. Bluto, all the earlier comics revolved around the same formula. Bluto harasses Olive; Popeye initially gets beaten, takes out a can of spinach and gulps it down to beat the shit out of Bluto and save his lady love Olive. The series always ended on a happy note with Popeye singing his famous song Popeye the sailor man. By the year 1956, everyone thought that the formula had paid up and the readership of the comic strip was finally going down. Paramount pictures, that had been making cartoon films with Popeye, sold out the copyrights to Associated Artists Productions who lost no time in making new series of films with Popeye. To the bewilderment of everyone, the TV ratings of the new series shot up the roof to become very popular not just among the kids but also a whole generation of adults having grown up watching the comic strip or the cartoon film later. If you have been a loyal Popeye fan, and not missed many episodes, you must have noticed a small baby making its appearance in the movies in between and looking like a small Popeye. The baby is not, as you must have thought, a baby of Popeye but a baby of one of his relatives, and endearingly called Sweat Pea.

Popeye vs. Bluto is a saga that continues till today after 75 years it first appeared as a comic strip. If anything, the significance of the Popeye movie has increased to make popular eating of spinach in all parts of the world.

Bluto and Olive: The Most Unlikely Hero and Heroine Characters

(http://popeye.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Bluto-and-Olive-The-Most-Unlikely-Hero-and-Heroine-Characters.jpg) (http://www.friendstamilchat.com)

The year 2012 happens to be the diamond jubilee year of the character Popeye and the comic strip called Popeye the sailor man. The comic strip was created by E. C. Segar, and surprisingly, the strip was running for 10 years when Popeye made his entry in it in January 1929. Before this, it was Olive Oyl and his family which was the central character in the strip. Ham Gravy, a man who seemed to be lazy doing as little work as possible, was more or less the fiancé of Olive and the family included Olive’s brother castor Oyl and her father.

It was by an accident that Popeye made his appearance in the comic strip. Ham Gravy and Olive were looking for crew for a ship that they wanted to take on a cruise to rob a casino when they saw Popeye and hired him as a sailor for the cruise. Now Popeye was shown as a short and stout balding man who was toothless always having a pipe in his mouth. Popeye was illiterate and a frustrated man always muttering something to him. In short, Popeye was the most unlikely hero of a comic strip in a time when heroes were smart and beautiful (they still are). At first, Olive is sent treating him as nothing more than a servant (she even calls him a bulging rat). She was also engaged with Ham Gravy at that time.

If Popeye doesn’t look like a hero, Olive herself looks nothing more than a caricature of a girl being tall as a bamboo and as thin as a paper. She is a gullible person who often shouts at Popeye. However, in future, Olive is shown falling to the charms of Popeye and doing as he wants her to do. A very unlikely pair of hero and heroine indeed!

What happened afterwards is also very interesting. The creator had no intention of continuing with Popeye, but when he disappeared from the series, angry readers protested and Segar had to bow down to their demands and bring back Popeye in the series, in fact, so loved was Popeye by the readers that Popeye was made the central character of the series and the series itself changed from being called Thimble Theater to Popeye the sailor man in honor of Popeye.

Popeye has a friend cum adversary in the shape of Bluto, another sailor who is twice his size and also stronger than Popeye. Olive often gets impressed by the antics of Bluto and he is seen trying to kidnap her. Popeye is shown trying to save her but in vain as Bluto beats him badly. It is only when Popeye takes out a can of spinach and consumes the contents that he gets super strength and muscle power to manage to beat Bluto and save Olive.

The series often shows a small baby who looks like Popeye. He is called Sweat Pea and many take him to be a son of Popeye and Olive though he is an orphan Popeye found on his doorsteps.

Who is Olive?

Olive is one of the leading cartoon characters of a world famous cartoon strip. This carton series has been evolved in 1919 by E.C. Segar. The main character of this fictional animated cartoon story is a sailor; who loves to eat spinach. The name of the live cartoon movie, still being shown in television media has been provided after its main character i.e. Popeye the sailorman. Originally, the fiction has been incorporated in a daily comic strip of king’s feature called Thimble Theatre. This strip was renounced for its name as Popeye; after the unique success of this cartoon character. It became surprisingly popular among people within a short time span.

The real fact about olive is that it was the leading character of the fictional comic story before 10 years of Popeye’s introduction to the series. Later, its popularity stepped down i.e. up to second ranking after the sailorman. Her role and appearance is more or less similar in the comic strip and the animated cartoon show in television.

In the originally written comic strip, Olive Oyl was a fashionable gal of thin personality with its long black hair designed in to a bun. She was represented as the fiancée of Harold Ham gravy. He was a lazy character who did not wish to work at all. Thus, he was often intended to borrow money from other persons. Moreover, he gets attracted towards the rich women who were not liked by his fiancée naturally. This condition caused the occurrence of a lunaphobia fit to olive once that is a kind of angry madness. Later, she recovered, but continued pretending to be sick in order to win Harold’s heart back. She was very devoted for him till the appearance of Popeye, a spinach lover in the story. Both of them did not like each other at the first sight and fought with each other bitterly. Later, they realized to become caring for each other.

The animated cartoon version of olive; by Fleischer Studios is very popular due to its interesting appearance. It has been designed with tall and lean personality. The enormous feet of the character are frequent comic matter. In TV cartoon shows, she appeared as the girl friend of the sailorman. She tends to get angry, very often, over the small things. The archrival of Popeye; Bluto wants to win her affection. Thus, often kidnaps her in the cartoon story; but his lover, the sailorman rescues her every time from Bluto, with his amazing physical power. This enormous power of Popeye the sailorman is shown as to be obtained by frequent consumption of spinach. In this way, Bluto has also won the viewers’ attention for its important role in the cartoon strip.

Olive is expressed as a caring girl in the fiction, as she takes care of sweet pea, a cute baby. It has not been exactly cleared in the story that sweet pea is an adopted son of her or Popeye the sailorman. It is probably the foundling of the sailorman. Sometimes, it has been suggested by the comic strip that sweet pea is olive’s nephew that’s why she takes care of it regularly. The overall scenario of the comic film cannot seem interesting without this cartoon character there.

Who is Olive in Popeye: It is same as asking Who was Helen of Troy

If you are a kid, there is no point asking this silly question as you have been watching the cartoon film Popeye the sailor man for so many years. Of course you know that Olive is the love of Popeye who would go to any length to keep her as his lady love. Popeye is shown gullible and so often falls to the guiles of Bluto, another sailor who happens to be an adversary of Popeye. Bluto is much stronger and bigger than Popeye, and is able to impress Olive with his antics. Popeye tries to save Olive in vein until he realizes it is time to gulp some spinach and gain some muscle power to be able to overcome the might of Bluto.

But why discuss who Olive is? Probably the question has become relevant in times when we are facing the problems of obesity, pollution and shortcomings of nutrients in our food than ever before. This is the diamond jubilee year of the magnificent Popeye comic strip as it was first introduced by its creator E. C. Segar who tried to give a secret weapon to its central character. And the weapon given to Popeye is so wonderful and good for all of us that the comic strip is appealing to us even today. Popeye gulps down the contents of a can when he needs muscular strength and power. No point to guess what is there in the can he empties frequently to beat Bluto to save his love. He eats spinach that was thought by Segar to be full of vitamin A, scientifically known as beta carotene. Little did Segar realize at that time that spinach was a super food being full of essential nutrients for human beings? There is probably no other food item that has been a subject of scientific research so many times. And the good thing is that its myriad benefits are still unfolding. There is no doubt about high iron and vitamin A content of spinach but the benefits do not end there. Spinach has many other vitamins, minerals, metals, and even omega fatty acids that are so very essential for our body and mind.

What is great about spinach is that it is readily available in all parts of the world despite originating in South West Asia. Today it is grown in nearly all climates and all parts of the world. Another factor in its favor is that it is cheap and readily available as fresh, frozen and in canned forms. One can eat the leaves of spinach in raw form in salads by adding a little olive oil (not the Olive Oyl of Popeye the sailor man!) though spinach is eaten best as a soup or curry by boiling it in a bit of water. Today people can have the benefits of spinach by microwaving washed spinach in a few minutes and then mixing the leaves in a mixer.

Who is sweet pea?

Sweet pea is one of the interesting cartoon characters of Popeye comic strip. This comic series is created by E.C. Segar on Dec, 1919. It has been some time pronounced as Sweet pea, which is a loving title for the dearest one. This term is used by Popeye the sailorman for his foundling to whom he cares a lot. The name is kept in the reference of a beautiful flower, sweet pea.

The entire comic strip is totally an imaginary creation. On the original comic, Thimble Theatre represented that sweet pea is a kid in the story of a sailor man which was found on his door step according to the basic story. Actually, this baby has been delivered in to a box to Popeye by the unknown source. He was adopted by Popeye as his son and found his intimate care. The girl friend of the sailorman, Olive Oyl also takes his care sincerely. The appearance of this kid is represented as a crawling baby; it eventually sounds ‘glop’ only. After the year, it grew up by the age to talk in a normal way. It can even throw punches, wherever necessary to incorporate some fun in the animated movie.

Once it appeared to hit the punch to Bluto, the enemy of Popeye the sailorman. Olive is the girl friend of the sailorman, who often gets kidnapped by Brutus. The sailorman becomes successful every time to rescue his girl friend out of the enemies trap by gaining power through the consumption of spinach.

This comic strip becomes very popular among children as well as adults, all around the world. The whole story is more or less similar to the comic strip, live action movie and the animated series. The leading character in the cartoon series appears to eat spinach to earn the energy. This kind of representation is very useful to create positive affect over the children. They take thorough interest to consume green vegetables.

Popeye the sailorman is interestingly expressed as an amazing story of a love triangle with a lot of fun and adventure. The wittiness and intelligent attitude of Popeye, rude and somewhat angry appearance of Olive and funny ideas of Bluto impart this comedian show a flow of fun and adventure for the viewers. The story always shows mystery regarding the plans of Bluto to knock down its opponent sailor and win the heart of his girl friend.

The activities of Popeye, such as eating spinach with great interest, having a blow pipe in its mouth always, taking care of its adopted son, and sailing on the sea attracts children very much. The role of sweet pea in this whole series is to add some more comedy and fun in certain events. Moreover, the presence of this character is helpful to proceeds the story in an adventurous manner. In some places of the basic comic strip, this child character is represented as the nephew of the sailor man’s girl friend while in other events; confusions are created whether the kid is the own son.

Who is Sweet Pea in Popeye the Sailor Man?

Sweet Pea, lovingly called Swe’Pea by Popeye and Olive Oyl in the popular comic strip and TV series Popeye the sailor man, is a small baby that many mistakenly consider to be Popeye’s son. Not many people know how and when Sweat Pea made his appearance in the series, but loyal fans know that Popeye found this cute looking boy on his doorsteps one day. The boy resembled Popeye amazingly, and this led many to misbelieve that he is a child of Popeye and Olive.

Many would wonder why this hullaballoo over a sweet little boy in a comic series. But there is a solid reason behind selling of toys related with Popeye and celebrating year 2012 as the diamond jubilee year of the comic strip that was launched way back in 1929. The central character of the cartoon series, Popeye the sailor man, is a hero in the true sense of the world and quite unlike other super heroes as he does not possess any super natural abilities. He takes on the might of Bluto, another sailor who is twice his size and stronger than Popeye also. Whenever Popeye feels he is losing the battle against Bluto, he opens a can of spinach and gulps down its contents. He is instantly charged and gains both strength and muscle power to beat Bluto and free Olive from his clutches.

Of course Popeye is symbolic in nature; the very fact that his diamond jubilee is being celebrated in different parts of the world is signal enough for the people to start eating spinach which is considered a super food by doctors and scientists because of abundance of essential minerals and vitamins in this green, leafy vegetable. Though the plant originated in west Asia, it was introduced to Europe and Americas and soon became very popular in all parts of the world. The creator of the cartoon series Popeye the sailor man, contrary to popular belief that he made Popeye eat spinach because of its iron content, believed spinach to be a rich source of beta carotene that helps build muscles and strength.

Spinach is associated with the famous decimal error that occurred when Professor Von Bunge released the results of iron content. On place decimal error meant that public got to know a wrong iron content that indicated nearly 10 times more iron that is actually present in spinach. This decimal error was later explained or ascribed to bad science practices at the turn of 19th century. But this error was instrumental in making people of the country take up eating of spinach in a big way, and son, the consumption of spinach became manifold in the country.

There is perhaps no other food item that has been a subject of constant research like spinach. The benefits of spinach to mankind are still unfolding, and the latest in the series is its ability to lower blood pressure by producing nitric acid in the mouth when eaten. This nitric acid is known to reduce blood pressure.

What is Spinach

Spinach is a green, leafy plant having originated in Asia but today found in all parts of the world. Arab traders took the plant to India and China, and later to Europe and Americas. Spinach leaves and stem have long been eaten as a vegetable and the plant is considered a super food because of the presence of iron and vitamin A in high quantities. Spinach has been a subject of research for more than hundred years and scientists have been singing praises of the health benefits of the green plant since ages. One cartoon strip and the movie have its hero Popeye eat spinach to gain super strength to overcome obstacles and to beat his arch rival Bluto.

Do you know about SPIDES, or what it is? It stands for Spinach, Popeye, Iron, Decimal Error Story, and continued as a myth for very many years. It was in the last quarter of 19th century that scientist Professor Von Bunge carried out research on the iron content of spinach and misplaced a decimal point that continued to for long indicating presence of iron10 times its actual value for more than 50 years when the mistake was finally rectified. However, the myth served the purpose of popularizing spinach in the country as a very powerful food and its demand increased many times. Talking about Popeye the sailor man, created by E. C. Segar, he ate spinach in his fights against Bluto not for high iron content but for it high Vitamin A content that turned Popeye into a super hero.

Spinach is full of not just iron and vitamin A but also important minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, vitamins like B2, and B6, copper, phosphorous, zinc etc. It is a rich source of omega 3 fatty acids also, making it a super food for human beings. Boiling it was thought to be detrimental to its folate content but today, microwaving spinach is thought to be better as it saves entire folate content.

In warm countries like India, spinach is sold fresh but it is also sold frozen and in canned form in countries like US, Canada, Australia, and entire Europe. Spinach has been thought to provide muscle strength and the tests carried out on human beings and the research has corroborated this fact. Patients after surgeries are recommended spinach juice to regain muscle strength by doctors which reflects the super food status of spinach.

In the cartoon series Popeye the sailor man, Popeye has been shown a lean man who has a girlfriend in Olive Oyl. Bluto is another sailor who has eyes on Olive and tries to impress her to become his girlfriend. Popeye is often angry because of his endeavors and takes him on despite the fact that Bluto is double his size and is also more powerful than him. Spinach it is that comes to the rescue of Popeye who is shown gulping down the contents of cans of spinach every time he has to take on Bluto to save his girlfriend. Sweat pea is another character in the series whom many believe to be a son of Popeye.

The Nutritional Value of Spinach

Spinach is a green leafy plant eaten as a vegetable in all parts of the world for its high nutritional value. It is considered to be a powerhouse of strength and energy and a rich source of minerals and vitamins. So beneficial is spinach in all forms and dishes that the plant that originated in west Asia sand taken to all parts of the world from there is today not only sold fresh but also sold in frozen and canned forms to increase its shelf life. We all know how Popeye the sailor man gulps down a can of spinach before his fight with Bluto to gain muscle power and strength.

Popeye was right. Eating spinach does improve one’s strength and muscle power though not to the levels shown in the cartoon film that has been so popular for the last so many years. There have been lots of researches done on this green vegetable and till now, it was the high iron content in spinach that was considered as the reason of it being called a super food. But latest researches have found that its property of providing strength is due to the presence of inorganic nitrate.

Volunteers in the study were given nitrate in the amount they would get from a plate of spinach, and the scientists observed that their need for oxygen was reduced while their muscle performance increased. These scientists are of the view that this finding could explain the health benefits of fruits and vegetables as much remains unclear as to what is the mechanism behind such benefits.

The benefits of spinach keep on unfolding even though mankind thought enough research has been done on this miracle of a food item. Even the creator of the cartoon film Popeye may not have an inkling of what this amazing super food could do while associating spinach with the central character playing the role of a sailor man. Popeye’s girlfriend is seen troubled by another sailor Bluto who happens to be twice the size of our lean hero. However, with the help of spinach, Popeye easily overcomes the strength of Bluto and saves his girlfriend.

The inorganic nitrate that has been found to be responsible for the super strength of spinach interacts with bacteria found inside our mouth producing nitric acid. Nitric acid molecule has been found to help in lowering blood pressure.

E.C Segar, the creator of Popeye the sailor man, did not know much about the health benefits of spinach except its high vitamin A content. But the way Popeye got transformed to perform seemingly impossible tasks after gulping down cans of spinach made spinach very popular in the country and its consumption increased manifold. Talking of Popeye, did you know that there is a little baby in the cartoon comic strip called sweet pea? Many wrongly think of the little baby born of Popeye and Olive Oyl, his girlfriend.

Popeye or not, the fact remains that spinach is a super food with lots of health benefits and needs to be popularized further to fight various diseases and malnutrition.

Creamed Spinach: One of the many ways to eat Spinach

We all know how much Popeye loved spinach and how every time he was under a threat from his enemy Bluto, he gulped down the contents of a can of spinach to overpower him. Bluto was double the size of Popeye, yet Popeye managed to beat him because of the power he got from spinach. The creator of the series Popeye the sailor man, E. C. Segar used spinach to be a source of power for Popeye as he was under the impression that spinach was a rich source of beta carotene, commonly known as vitamin A. It is true that spinach contains a lot of beta carotene, but it is a treasure house of many other vitamins and minerals which is why it would not be wrong to call it a super food.

Spinach is a green, leafy vegetable that is very versatile and can be eaten not just fresh but also as frozen and canned form. In most Asian cultures, spinach is sold fresh and one can use the leaves in salads and also after boiling it and making a creamy soup. In fact, creamed spinach is a very tasty food item with its rich flavor and deep taste. In Asian countries, spinach dishes that are very popular are spinach with sweat pea and spinach with cheese.

In a sense, Popeye happens to be the first super hero though he did not have any super powers and made use of something as ordinary as a green vegetable to get muscle power and strength to perform incredible tasks and also to beat Bluto who was stronger than him. People love Popeye despite he is short, balding, toothless, one eyed and an illiterate man who is also a frustrated man muttering nonsense to himself. He is perhaps the most unlikely hero in the world of comics but then his lady love, Olive Oyl is also not the kind of sex symbol that a heroine of a cartoon series would ever be. She is tall as a bamboo and thin as a paper. She is also very fickle minded getting impressed by the antics of Bluto who tries to kidnap her. It is left to the guiles of Popeye and his spinach eating habit to save her from the clutches of Bluto. Popeye’s real power lies in spinach and this is what interests many even today.

2012 happens to be diamond jubilee year of this great unsung hero who made his first appearance way back in February 1929. Surprisingly, the series was earlier running as Thimble Theater and the central characters were Olive and her family. But after Popeye was introduced as a sailor, there was uproar as Segar sought to move him out of the series. He was so much loved that the creator had to bow to the demands of the readers and make him the central character of the series. It was Popeye that made the creator change the name of the series to Popeye the sailor man.

Growing Spinach May Soon be Trendy Again

(http://popeye.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Growing-Spinach-May-Soon-be-Trendy-Again.gif) (http://www.friendstamilchat.com)

So you were a big fan of Popeye the sailor man as a kid and liked his antics as well as the manner in which he gulped cans of spinach whenever he needed a burst of muscle power. The popularity enjoyed by spinach in the country as a super food owes a lot to this cartoon series designed by E. C. Segar way back in 1929. Today, after 75 years, diamond jubilee of Popeye is being celebrated in different parts of the world with his memorabilia, soft toys, posters and banners being sold to honor the great hero that Popeye has all along been. Popeye’s fights with Bluto have been immortalized with kids knowing how Popeye will beat the shit out of Bluto after easting a can of spinach. Sweat Pea is a cute little baby in the series who, though he looks like Popeye, is not a child of Popeye and Olive as many of the fans believe him to be. He is actually an orphan that Popeye found outside his house on stairs.

Even when the comic series was introduced, the creator did not have an idea of the kind of treasure house spinach was, and he thought of it as great source of vitamin A, or beta carotene as it is known as, that gave Popeye the strength to take on Bluto, another sailor, who was his adversary and always harassing his girlfriend Olive Oyl. Yes, spinach does contain a high amount of vitamin A, bit it also contains abundance of iron that provides strength to human beings. This is not all as spinach contains nearly all necessary minerals and vitamins that our bodies need daily. Vitamins A, B, C, E, folate, minerals like potassium, sodium, calcium, and even trace metals like sulfur, copper and zinc, you name them, you got them.

Spinach definitely plays a big role in keeping blood sugar levels down, and lately, it has been proved that inside mouth, it produced nitric acid that lowers blood pressure of those afflicted with the ailment of high blood pressure. Spinach prevents cataracts in eyes as we grow older and keeps them healthy because of the presence of carotenoids. The incidence of heart attacks and strokes is greatly reduced because of abundance of vitamins A and C, both of which work as antioxidants to keep our cardio vascular system healthy.

Spinach is suitable for places having cold weather though it is beg grown in all climates around the world these days. Growing this green, leafy vegetable in your garden is an easy task. You just need to make sure that the drainage is good and the soil is loose. Sandy soil is considered better for spinach. It is one plant that needs a lot of nitrogen as fertilizer to grow well. If you have not grown spinach earlier, be cautious while dropping the seeds of spinach on to soil. The seeds are small and thin which will make the plants grow cramped for space and you would require thinning.

Popeye Canned Spinach: Branded Spinach

Popeye happens to be the precursor of all super heroes that we have witnessed in the last century and continue to see even today. Yes, he did not have any super power, he was not tall, dark, and handsome, and he was even bald, one eyed, and toothless. But he had a heart of gold, and a morality without any comparison. Popeye the sailor man was shown as a frustrated man muttering nonsense to self and others. When Olive met him for the first time as she was looking for a sailor to make the crew of a ship, she asks him if he was a sailor. To this query, Popeye replies ‘Ja think I am a cowboy’. If Popeye happens to be the most unlikely hero of all times, His girlfriend Olive Oyl happens to be the most unlikely sex symbol ever. She is tall as a bamboo and thin as a cardboard. Nevertheless, this pair of hero and heroine has been loved by the audiences like no other pair in history. The most loved pair in cartoon films also has a cute baby (not their own) called Sweat Pea in the series though he happens to be an abandoned child whom Popeye found on his doorsteps.

Popeye draws his super strength and muscle power from canned spinach that he gulps down whenever his enemy Bluto tries to overpower him in a bid to kidnap Olive. Though Popeye has a been a very popular super hero and loved for his innocence and moral values, he has also indirectly helped greatly to popularize consumption of spinach all over the world, especially the US where canned spinach started to sell in a much higher quantity. There are many companies selling canned spinach but Popeye canned spinach is a brand that sells in very high numbers as compared to other brands. One great feature of this canned spinach is that you do not need to thaw it like other frozen spinach cans and can eat the spinach directly from the can. This is really time saving as one does not need to thaw. Also, one can use this spinach when the recipe demands frozen spinach.

Popeye’s enmity with Bluto continues till today and a person watching an episode knows that it will be Bluto who will beat him badly initially. It is only in desperation that Popeye gets hold of a can of spinach when he needs strength and muscle power. After gulping down the contents of the can, he beats the shit out of Bluto and saves his girlfriend and lady love Olive.

While spinach is mostly consumed fresh in Asian cultures, it is sold frozen and canned in western countries. Whether fresh or canned, spinach remains one of the super foods Mother Nature has provided us. It is full of iron, vitamin A, folate, Vitamins B, C, D, all essential minerals such as sodium, potassium, calcium, omega fatty acids, fibers and many more substances beneficial for human beings. Spinach prevents cancers, lowers blood pressure, and also helps diabetics.

Popeye proteins

Proteins are an essential part of our body. A particular protein, Popeye protein, has been identified in the cardiac pacemaker centers of the heart. This Popeye protein plays an essential part in the adaption of heart during stress. The importance of the discovery of Popeye proteins lay in the possibility of development of treatments for abnormal heart rhythms. Popeye protein conserved region is a family of evolutionary related proteins. The Popeye family of proteins is mostly found in the developing and adult striated muscles and is restricted only to the vertebrates. These Popeye proteins are represented by highly conserved region which includes about three transmembrane domains. The presence of the Popeye proteins in the heart and striated muscles indicates their important function in these regions.

This Popeye domain protein helps the body to cope with stress. During stress the body releases the hormone adrenaline. However, how exactly adrenaline alters the heart rhythm during stress was not known. Adrenaline causes Popeye protein to be released into the blood stream which causes the heart to increase its rhythm, thus helping the body to cope with stress in the process. Popeye domain protein is found in abundance in the muscles and though it had been discovered 10 years back, its exact function in the body has been unknown until now.

Heartbeats are initiated in the specialized pacemaker cells of the heart- Sino atrial node and atrio ventricular node. Popeye domain proteins are present in the outer membranes of these pacemaker cells and the Popeye proteins stains red in the outer membranes of these cells. During stress when the body releases adrenaline, cAMP-a signaling molecule- is released which interacts with the Popeye protein. This interaction of the Popeye protein with cAMP changes the electrical properties of the cell membrane. It is thought that this is the phenomenon by which adrenaline alters the reaction of the heart during stressful situations.

Many researches were conducted to know the exact function of Popeye proteins in our body. In healthy humans and mice adrenaline is released during stress which helps the body to cope with stress by helping the heart to pump more oxygen laden blood all through the body. However, experiments conducted on mice that lacked the Popeye domain protein gene reveled that these mice were unable to cope with stressful situations and their heart rate actually slowed down.

The above mentioned research observations can be applied incase of humans. Many elderly people have heart irregularities like sick sinus syndrome, arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation etc. it is believed that the research conducted on Popeye proteins on mice can throw substantial light on these irregularities and it is expected that new treatments for these heart related disorders can now be on its way.
Discovery of the Popeye proteins in the heart pacemaker cells have given the researchers a new direction for research into the heart beat irregularities. Many elderly people lose their lives each year due to complications developed by irregular heartbeats. Further research in Popeye proteins can throw light into this phenomenon and help to develop the right kind of treatment.

The Value of Green Leafy Vegetables

Why are green vegetables so important in our diet?

If I say that greener the color of the vegetable, more beneficial it is for the health of people, I would not be wrong at all. Spinach is a prime example of a green, leafy vegetable that is a treasure house of essential nutrients for human beings. In fact, green vegetables provide a lot of strength and help in improving immune system of human beings. If you want to judge the nutritional abilities of a vegetable, just look at its color and you are not off the mark. Green color is indicative of amount of chlorophyll inside the plant, and thus dark green vegetables have a higher amount of chlorophyll inside. More chlorophyll means higher beta carotene to give muscle power and strength, which is what gave the creator of Popeye the sailor man, a cartoon strip, the idea of a man getting instant power after eating a can of spinach.

Popeye consumes cans of spinach to gain muscle power and strength

Popeye, who is a sailor and loves Olive Oyl, has to face the brute strength of Bluto, another sailor, who is bigger and more powerful than him. Initially, Bluto easily overpowers Popeye but when Popeye gulps down a can of spinach, he develops lot of muscle power and manages to beat the shit out of Bluto. Popeye’s trick remains eating spinach to save his girlfriend from the clutches of Bluto and despite knowing the end of the story, people, especially kids, love the animated series that has been telecast in all parts of the world for the last 75 years. Many of the viewers of the cartoon film think of Sweat Pea, a small baby sometimes seen in the series as being the child of Popeye and his friend Olive. However, he is an orphan whom Popeye found on his door steps.

Coming back to the topic of nutrition given by green vegetables, Spinach has carotenoids that work as antioxidants required by our bodies. These substances are helpful in keeping away various types of cancers and other ailments of joints such as arthritis (a degenerative disease). Carotenoids also keep blood sugar levels under control. Beta carotene (simply vitamin A) is found in abundance in spinach that helps in metabolism of proteins and keeps our vision healthy all the time. Spinach is also full of vitamin C that is not only an antioxidant but also makes our immune system strong to keep us away from infections like common cold and flu.

Spinach and also other green, leafy vegetables contain not just vitamins but also essential minerals like sodium, potassium, and calcium. These keep our skeletal system strong and working in top condition. Potassium helps in maintaining normal blood pressure also. We all know how important calcium is for keeping our bones strong and healthy. Spinach has an abundance of fibers slowing down absorption rate, thus keeping carcinogens away from our bodies. It also prevents our bodies from absorbing excess cholesterols.

Where is Popeye Today to Inspire People to Increase Spinach Consumption

There are very few cartoon characters being so ungainly and still popular even after 75 years of their launch as Popeye the sailor man. It is hard to imagine how a short, thin, almost ugly bald sailor loving an even uglier looking thin and tall girl like Olive Oyl could be so appealing to so many people around the world. May be it has to do with the rustic charm of Popeye and his courage to take on the might of Bluto, another sailor who is double his size, to save his girlfriend from being harassed. Popeye’s honesty, innocence and love for Olive capture his essence that is so very endearing to readers of this comic strip that is celebrating its diamond jubilee. The creator of the character, E. C. Segar, has shown spinach as his source of muscle strength and power and Popeye just gulps down a can of spinach before taking on Bluto or when he is trying a difficult physical task. Believe it or not, the consumption of spinach went up manifold in the country as this comic strip and later its animated version became popular in US.

In these times when getting foods with high nutritional value has become difficult and we are grappling with problems of pollution and adulteration, spinach comes across as a breath of fresh air with its abundance of vitamins, minerals, and other health benefits for us. It is a green leafy plant that is easily available in all parts of the world and much more powerful than the so called health supplements available in the market. After all, why not make use of abundantly available supplies of the super food called spinach than waster time and money on health supplements that are just making tall claims and giving us not much. Spinach has more nutrients per calorie or serving than many others combined. The earliest scientific research carried out on iron content of spinach actually made a bad mistake of making use of iron bowl to cook spinach and returned results that proclaimed 10 times more iron that was there in spinach. This mistake was realized only 50 years later and termed as bad science practice. Still, the iron content in spinach remained too high to be very beneficial for human beings, giving them muscle power and strength just like Popeye got in the comic strip Popeye the sailor man. Eating spinach, Popeye even saved sweat pea, a small baby in the film many times

However, the health benefits to us from spinach do not end here, and if we talk about the creator of Popeye, we find that he thought of spinach as a super food because of its rich vitamin A content, also called beta carotene. Perhaps, there is no other food item on earth having so many health benefits and these benefits are all the time increasing with the latest being its ability to reduce blood pressure by making nitric acid in mouth when eaten.

There is need for popularizing spinach using Popeye today.

Popeye Memorabilia: Time to Celebrate an Unsung Hero

Popeye is an unlikely hero for all those who love to watch his antics in the animated film series called Popeye the sailor man. The series that was created by E. C. Segar in 1929 is entering its 75th year and remains as popular as ever. The 75th anniversary of Popeye is being celebrated with great zeal by the admirers of the comic strip and cartoon films and to honor this hero, toys, collectibles, and memorabilia have been launched and being sold in all corners of the world. Popeye is one of the very few characters that are loved despite their ugly personalities. He is bald, short, and certainly not a handsome man by any stretch of imagination. But one habit of his and that is to gulp down a can of spinach to gain strength and muscle power to take on the might of Bluto, another sailor, mostly to save his girlfriend Olive remains etched in the memories of all the lovers of Popeye. Hope you remember sweat pea, a small baby that resembled Popeye, and many believed him to be Popeye’s baby.

Celebrating diamond jubilee of a cartoon character also assumes significance in the wake of great help in popularizing the habit of eating spinach. Yes, it is a fact that the sale and consumption of spinach in the country went up many time more with the comic showing the hero getting immediate muscle power and strength upon eating spinach. Spinach happens to be one gift from Mother Nature that has been there, fulfilling the nutritional requirements of the mankind in a perfect manner for the last so many centuries. The green, leafy plant serves as a food source that is full of iron, vitamin A, and many other minerals and vitamins that are required by us on a daily basis. Interestingly, Segar, the creator of Popeye the sailor man, presented spinach as a super food because of the abundance of vitamin A, and not iron as is believed by many. It was only later through research by scientists that people came to know of myriad benefits of spinach. In fact, after a century of research, we are still seeing new benefits unfolding with consumption of spinach.

For example, a cup of spinach has enough fibers in it to help aid in digestion and prevent constipation. It keeps blood sugar levels down and prevents people from overeating by making them feel full for a long time. It is not just prostate cancer that is inhibited by consumption of spinach; it has been shown to slow down cell division inside stomach, including skin cancer cells. Spinach contains two anti inflammatory ingredients in very high amounts that prevent inflammation in body joints. It is already known that spinach is good at keeping blood sugar levels low and thus a good vegetable to include in the diet of diabetics.

However, the benefits of spinach for us do not end here and only recently it has been found that spinach is good at lowering blood pressure also.

Popeye merchandise

Popeye, the sailorman is a popular cartoon hero, which is notably famous among children for its funny appearance and amazing actions. It was basically a character with little role in the comic strip, Thumble Theatre earlier. Later, the increased craze of this animated cartoon character suggested the designers to modify the fictional story; revolving around Popeye. This step of the creators really proved successful and the comic earned viewers’ attention; in a quite fascinating way.

Soon, the action movie of this cartoon represented the need of merchandising. Popeye the sailorman became to be known as one of the leading character to rule over the heart of the audience. This animated character was featured frequently in the popular comic strips and magazines thoroughly. Later, it was subjected for mass merchandising. This ultimately fascinating cartoon is created by Bud Sagendorf for King’s features. Then, the publication of this cartoon series in king’s comic was ceased. Bud became busy with other projects. The rights to publish Popeye further had been transferred to Charlton comics. Here, George Altman, an American cartoon artist was offered the opportunity to design this cartoon for the script of Joe Gill. He did the job from 1969 to 1977. Later, Bill Pearson continued with the script of this world famous imaginary cartoon sailorman.

The comic strip had been renamed as Popeye. This interesting cartoon hero is represented as a sincere sailorman in the action film. The reason of popeye’s power is spinach. Olive is his girl friend. She loves the sailorman but, sometimes get enough angry on him for very small matters. Bluto is a powerful enemy of popeye, the sailorman; with huge muscular body. He has a romantic interest in Olive. This is the main reason of fight between him and Bluto (also called as Brutus). Thus, both of these sailormen always make plans of defending each other anyhow. Sweet pea is also a significant character of the same cartoon series. He is a crawling kid who is too small to talk properly. The sailorman and his girlfriend loves sweet pea very dearly according to the story.

Thus, the entire fiction is based on the factual tale of love, romance, jealousy and funny revengeful planning. Bluto often tends to kidnap her dream girl i.e. Olive. He plans with great zeal to meet his purpose, but every time gets defeated by the sailorman. As the two sailorman competes for a girl in the series; strength matter a lot here. Brutus remains weaker than the popeye even after possessing more muscular appearance. He regularly eats spinach to become energetic. The cartoon has always been shown to carry its spinach can with it everywhere.

Extraordinary representation of all these ordinary actions in the cartoon strips turned on the public attention to purchase popeye collectibles in high amount. Many merchandisers are actively selling popular items with the logo of popeye. Such as toys, vintage, books, magazines, T- shirts with the photo of popeye are available easily in the markets. One can also find these stuffs online. The characters of Sweet pea, Brutus and Olive are also being redeemed in popeye merchandising. The public craze for this animated cartoon strip led the merchandising business to the heights.

Popeye video game

Popeye the sailorman video game came in 1982. It was developed and published by Nintendo. The credit to design this platform game goes to Genyo Takeda and Shigeru Miyamoto, while there are some rumors that Ikegami Tsushinki also co-operated his efforts in designing the game. Two of the players can enjoy the video game in the form of alternate operation or one person can also enjoy the game alone. Popeye, the cartoon character, is available in to two configurations, standard and cocktail.

The license of this arcade game was possessed by Atari to release it in UK and Ireland, exclusively. The cabinet to display the game was manufactured and designed by Atari only. The top five scores are kept as the record on the scoreboard of this game. The world record regarding this video game is secured on the name of Ben Falls who scored 3,023,060 points on Dec, 2011; as it has been stated by the Twin Galaxies International Scoreboard.

The basic concept of this game is expressed in a fantastic manner to make it quite entertainting for children. The entire session of the game is based on the exact story of popeye as shown in the live action movie of Popeye the sailorman. The player has to gain some special items, on various levels of the game; through the animated character of the sailorman. These items include a no. of hearts, musical notes and help letters. During the collection of these items, the game character needs to face certain interrupters such as Bluto or Brutus, sea storms and other kinds of dangerous situations.

The player can use an 8-way joystick to move Popeye upward, downward, backward and forth direction. An attack button is there to beat the danger but, the character cannot be commanded to jump in order to avoid the enemy. While, there is a system for Bluto, the enemy of the sailorman; to jump up and down for knocking him out. He cannot be directly attacked by Popeye the sailorman while he can just avoid him by destructing the harmful items like bottles, skulls and beast birds.
The concept is designed to be funnier by the incorporation of a spinach can in every level of the game. Spinach is one of the favorite items of the sailorman and consuming it enhances his power, surprisingly. Attacking on the spinach provides energy to Popeye. Thus, it can beat Bluto by running through him for the time. This attacking action lasts only for few seconds and Brutus can come again to create a challenging situation before him. There are some barrels which can be used by the sailorman to knock down Brutus.

Olive, sweet pea and wimpy are also the licensed cartoon characters; in this video game. They appear considerably decorative, thus do not incorporate more in the game play. Sweet pea appears in the higher level when the sailorman touch sees saw and earns bonus points. Further, Popeye the sailorman undergoes a dream walking where Olive also appears to be rescued by him. Olive is his girl friend while sweet pea is his foundling baby, according to the original comic strip.

Who is Popeye: How silly can you get?

You can be pardoned for asking this question if you live in an area with no cable TV as Popeye the sailor man is perhaps one of the most popular cartoon movie series that has been telecast on TV and an all time favorite of kids for generations. So you cannot escape by saying you are an adult as you must have read comic strip of the series as a kid yourself as the series has become 75 year old this year as it was first introduced to the world way back in 1929. There is a reason of asking this question though. This is the diamond jubilee year of the comic strip and Popeye memorabilia is being sold in different parts of the world to remind people about not just Popeye and his antics but also the fact that the secret behind his super strength is nothing else than spinach, labeled as a super food by nutritionists the world over. At that time when the comic was introduced, the creator thought spinach to be full of vitamin A and he made his hero gulp down a can of spinach to get muscular strength needed to beat Bluto, double his size. Bluto is another sailor like Popeye and has eyes on Olive Oyl, the girlfriend of Popeye who seems to be gullible. In the series there is also a cute looking baby who makes appearance only a few times. He is sweat pea whom many mistakenly assume as the baby of Popeye and Olive.

The need to popularize Popeye, and thus spinach is as relevant today as it has ever been. This is because of the shortage of quality food in these times of heavy pollution and adulteration. Spinach happens to be a food source full of all essential nutrients needed by our bodies on a daily basis. If you take interest in scientific bloopers, you must have read about SPIDES, which is an acronym that stands for Spinach Popeye Iron Decimal Error Story, and is a result of bad science practices. The scientist Von Bunge, while publishing the results of iron content in spinach, bungled and made a decimal error that let people believe iron content in spinach was ten times more than it actually was. However, this was a myth that helped in making spinach popular in the country and its sale and consumption increased manifold because of this myth.

Apart from being rich in iron, spinach is also rich in vitamin A known as beta carotene. It has been used in various cultures and civilizations for centuries and man kind has known its goodness in different forms since ages. While spinach is consumed fresh in Asian countries, it is sold frozen or in canned form in western countries mostly.

These days when half of the population is complaining of obesity and many other ailments, spinach with its goodness seems to be an ideal answer to myriad problems facing mankind. This is why we are celebrating our spinach hero, Popeye in 2012.

Popeye the movie

It is one of the finest memories of some people’s childhood watching the Popeye the sailorman cartoon. It was a real hit cartoon of its time; the series of the sailorman was created in the year 1929, by Elzie Segar. It is a really amazing thing to think that how Mr. Segar got the idea of making Popeye a squinted eye man who loves to eat spinach. He is really muscular, just think about it, the sailor with a squinted eye who gets superhuman strength when he eats some spinach; isn’t it amazing? He do this action by pressing the box of spinach by his powerful hands, and after eating it, he gets so powerful that he can do anything, nothing is impossible for Popeye after that can of spinach. When we talk about Popeye, we have to talk about his girlfriend called olive oyl, a really long girl with skinny body, but still Popeye loved him. He saved her every time when she gets in some trouble with all his might, and when there is a hero, along comes the villain, and the villain in this cartoon series was a really fat guy named bluto who was also a sailor.

Bluto always tries to take olive away from Popeye because he also likes the girl, and every time bluto tries to kidnap olive as he loves her he gets beaten to a pulp by Popeye. When Bluto gains the upper hand on Popeye in a fight along comes the can of spinach to save the day, the way Popeye used to eat his spinach is one of the most amazing moments in the cartoon, he uses his muscled arms and sometimes even his pipe to eat his spinach, that pipe became a symbol for Popeye’s character.
If you are an admirer of this cartoon then you have sure remembered all the characters used in this series, and one of those characters is sweet pea who is Popeye’s adopted baby, sweet pea is also a famous character of the Popeye series because of its ordeals, sweet pea gets them in trouble all the time and Popeye always comes to save them no matter in what kind of problem they are? It is really funny to notice how Popeye the sailorman paves way to rescue its pals from troubles all the time and one of the amazing moments of this cartoon was when Popeye pumps his muscle’s and you can see the anchor tattoo on his arm. He adores sweet pea as his adopted son.

Popeye the sailorman cartoon series got so much popularity that even a movie was made, the movie was named as Popeye the movie, movie got created in the year 1980 and directed by Robert Altman, the character of the famous Popeye was played by Robin Williams, Shelley Duvall played the role of olive in this movie. The role of Brutus was played by Paul L. Smith, the movie got great success, another movie based on Popeye is being made and is said to release in upcoming years.

Other Notable Comic Strips
Hey Popeye Lovers Remember These?

Comic strips have been part of newspapers and periodicals since the late 19th century with the debut of The Yellow Kid in 1895, which eventually paved way to Blondie, Popeye, Dennis the Menace, Pogo and the Peanuts gang – the lovable comic strip characters we know today.

Sunday newspapers traditionally include special comic strips like Thimble Theater’s Popeye and Little Orphan Annie in the 1930s. Comic strips usually filled an entire newspaper page in a format known to collectors as a full page. It was gradually resized to reflect the change of time or eras. From the 1930s large scale newspaper advertisements, the paper rationing during World War II, the decline of newspaper circulation because of the dawn of television news and the 1950s-1960s inflation, comic strips has been seen being resized and changed in format until what we know them now. Bill Watterson, the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip creator, has oven voiced his opinion about the changes in size and the subsequent inability of cartoonist to create good comic panels. He won the battle against his syndicator and was granted to have half-sized Sunday comic strips and given freedom to arrange the panels the way he wanted.

There are many notable comic strips apart from Popeye through the ages and some of them are still running on daily and Sunday periodicals. Some of them are Gasoline Alley, Citizen Dog, The Amazing Spiderman, Tarzan, Marmaduke, Frank & Ernest, Prince Valiant, Dick Tracy, The Phantom, Mary Worth, Superman, The Boondocks, Batman, Garfield, Snoopy, Bloom County, Pooch Café, Krazy Kat, Dilbert and Doonesbury.

Alongside the beloved Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schultz and Dennis the Menace by Hank Ketcham, Elzie Crisler “E. C.” Segar’s Thimble Theater featuring the bulging muscled-forearm sailorman named Popeye made its way into pop culture.

E. C. Segar began drawing Thimble Theater for the New York Journal, a King Features Syndicate newspaper. The comic strip featured characters like Olive Oyl, Castor Oyl (Olive’s brother) and Horace Hamgravy. Thimble Theater made its debut on December 19, 1919 and later on expanded and syndicated by other papers and would eventually be known as simply Popeye.

It took about a decade before the character of Popeye was introduced to the Thimble Theater comic strip. Popeye’s first appearance was on January 17, 1929 in strip when Castor Oyl needed a mariner to navigate his ship to Dice Island and he encountered Popeye. When asked if he’s a sailor, Popeye cheekily answered, “D’ja think I’m a cowboy?” Popeye the sailor eventually stole the spotlight and became a regular character ever since.

Popeye the sailor became so popular that he was subsequently given a larger role in the comic strip; expanding into a side story of having a foundling baby Popeye endearingly called Swee’Pea. Apart from Popeye, notable lovable characters introduced in Thimble Theater includes the local cobbler George W. Geezil, Toar the caveman, Swee’Pea’s unlikely babysitter Alice the Goon, the magical dog-like creature Eugene the Jeep, the pirate Sea Hag, and the hamburger-loving moocher named J. Wellington Wimpy.

E. C. Segar’s Popeye was very different from the later incarnations of the comic strip after his death. The Popeye storyline was more complex and Bluto’s appearances were not as much as the later versions. There were also some characters that weren’t included in the Popeye cartoons. After his death, Popeye was picked up and continued by several artists and writers, most notable of them would be Segar’s assistant Bud Sagendorf.

Sagendorf drew and wrote Popeye’s daily comic strips until 1986 and the Sunday Popeye strips until 1994 before he died. He retained most of Segar’s initial vision and style for Popeye. He also included some of Segar’s not well-known characters into the Popeye strips. His pacing was less fast than Segar’s though. It would sometimes the Popeye story would last a week before it concluded, which attributed to Popeye’s longevity.

Bobby London took on the Popeye’s daily comic strips where Sagendorf left off – 1986 to 1992 – and Hy Eisman continued the Sunday edition comic strips in 1994. London often touched on controversial issues such as abortion and try to parody it to leave a message to the public. In London’s classic Popeye storyline titled “The Return of Bluto,” Popeye’s arch-enemy is seen battling against versions of him in comic books, television animation and animated feature film. London was eventually fired and reruns of Sagendorf’s Popeye were featured in the daily strip.

As of January 1, 2009, after seventy years of the death of Thimble Theater’s creator, E.C. Segar, Popeye became a public domain in most countries. Although the United States still have copyright claims to the Popeye character, its various film franchise, comic books, television shows (including Hanna-Barbera’s All-New Popeye Hour, The Popeye and Olive show, and Cartoon Network’s The Popeye Show), Popeye television commercials, theme music (I’m Popeye The Sailorman) and many more.

Popeye’s popularity branched out into other mediums. There’s the Quaker Oats commercials featuring Popeye, the Dr. Pepper’s 1979 “I’m Popeye the Pepper-man” campaign, Popeye radio shows, retail food like Popeye’s canned spinach, Popeye Candy Sticks, fast-food restaurant chain (Popeye’s Chicken & Biscuits), Popeye feature films, Popeye video and pinball games (created by Nintendo as a widescreen Game & Watch game), Popeye sports mascot, Popeye toys and other merchandise. Popeye’s character surely capitalized on almost all marketing mediums available.

Throughout the years, Popeye’s influence has reached the social and political areas. Popeye was featured in some awareness campaigns such as the 1990 advertisement about the harmful effects of coastal pollution. The commemorative U.S. postal stamps released in 1995 included the Popeye comic strip in the Comic Strip Classics series among other notable comic strips like The Yellow Kid, Gasoline Alley, Nancy, Little Nemo Slumberland, Krazy Kat, Alley Oop, Blondie, Bringing Up Father, The Katzenjammer Kids, Barney Google, Little Orphan Annie, Brenda Starr, Prince Valiant, Flash Gordon, Dick Tracy, Terry and the Pirates, Rube Goldberg’s Inventions, Li’l Abner and Toonerville Folks.

Thimble Theater became popular because of Popeye the sailor. And eventually, in the 1970s, the name was changed into Popeye and remains to be one of the longest running syndicated comic strips of all time.
