Writer  Review

Star Cast : Samuthirakani, Hari Krishnan, Antony, Subramaniam Siva, Kavin Jay Babu
Director : Franklin Jacob

Debutant director Franklin Jacob's Writer is an interesting take on the flaws in the police system and the changes that are to be incorporated to reduce the work pressure on the cops, especially those who are at the bottom of the food chain without any power.

Thangaraj (Samuthirakani) is not you regular upright police officer, he has adapted himself to the dishonest activities that are happening in the department but also tries his best within his ability to bring a change.

Thangaraj wants to start a Union for cops so that they get proper weekly off and fixed working hours but his superior officer is upset, he humiliates Thangaraj and transfers him to Chennai. In the new police station, knowing his history, the inspector and other cops only give him a painful duty to safeguard a Ph.D. research student Devakumar (Hari Krishnan) as instructed by their Deputy Commissioner.

Unknowingly Thangaraj helps them to create a fake crime scene and puts the innocent Devakumar behind the bars. Realizing his mistake, now Thangaraj decides to fight a battle with his superior officers to release Devakumar! Can he win?

Writer is a must-watch for touching upon the unexplored areas within the police force. We have never seen how a few cops in power treat those who are powerless in films but here debutant Franklin Jacob showcased this angle. Also, the reason behind the multiple suicides of cops in Tamil Nadu is another subplot that deserves our attention.

Samuthirakani has delivered a subtle and restrained performance, his body language is perfect for the cop who is about to retire from the service, his ability to express the guilt and helplessness in the pre-climax episode is an example of his brilliance!

After Samuthirakani, Hari Krishnan has a superb role and he has done his job well. The other supporting actors including Antony(the ex-convict in the film steals the show with his one-liners) and Subramaniam Siva also deserve applause. Iniya and the menacing Kavin Jay Babu are also impressive!

Technically, Pratheep Kalliraja's cinematography, Govind Vasantha's music, and Manigandan Sivakumar's editing aptly support Franklin Jacob's vision. On the downside, the film takes some time to establish the main characters in the first half.

Overall, Writer sends a much-needed message to the Government and the superior officers in the Police Force. Will they listen?
