A Complete History Of “Stories,” A Snapchat & Instagram Staple

The introduction of IGTV on Instagram — a video streaming service designed to get users to spend more time in the app — is a reminder that it’s easy to waste a lot of time on social media. If you aren’t into longform video content, you can stick to Snapchat and Instagram stories.

Not only are they a lot of fun, but stories have become revolutionary for marketers, influencers and businesses all over the world. Snapchat first introduced stories in October 2013, and in 2016, Instagram took the idea and ran with it.

Stories allow you to poll your friends, edit pictures creatively and even share snippets of your life with the people who follow you. You don’t have to be a social media superstar to take advantage of the tool. You can use stories to bring your own version of reality television to the small screens of your audience.

Today, more than 300 million users snap stories or post them via Instagram or even WhatsApp Status, and interactive stories have become a go-to for increasing social media engagement.

The most active industries using Instagram stories include fitness and fashion, but retail and technology are not far behind. Snapchat Discover Stories are ruled by Buzzfeed, Comedy Central, iHeart Radio, the Food Network, and ESPN, covering everything from cake-making to sports highlights. Regardless of what you love, there’s a story for it.

50 Reasons To Take Yourself Less Seriously

Remember when we’d spend our days running around outside with our closest friends? Once we become adults with 9-to-5 jobs, playing outside feels less appealing — but you should still believe in the power of play.

Today’s infographic is all about taking yourself less seriously. Many of the quotes here address the importance of playtime for children, but as Nobel laureate George Bernard Shaw once said, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.”

Did you know that just playing peek-a-boo with a child can help stimulate their brains, even if they’re too young to walk and talk? And if you want to have an active imagination, you have to make time to get a bit silly and daydream. Even if you weren’t a playful child, you can still become a playful adult and reclaim some of that lost wonder.

What should you do? Go outside and dance in the rain, read a picture book, play with Legos, or even play a game of hopscotch. Only you know what’ll awaken the child within you, and it’s okay to take some time figuring it out.

Legalized Cannabis Is Big Business — This Is Why

The recreational sale and use of cannabis is still federally restricted, but that hasn’t stopped eight states and Washington, D.C. from making it legal within their borders. Furthermore, 29 states have laws allowing medicinal use of marijuana. The eight states where cannabis is legal include California, Washington, Massachusetts, Colorado, Oregon, Nevada, Maine, and Alaska. Typically there are restrictions on whether or not marijuana seeds can be grown and in what quantity. In total, these states racked up $17.9 billion in revenue in 2017, and that created $745 million in state tax revenue.

Statistics show that recreational users in states where it is legal purchase $45 worth of cannabis every two weeks. The primary customers are millennials between 21 and 35 years old, which make up 41 percent of cannabis consumers. followed by 26 percent of people between 36 and 45, 16 percent between 46 and 55, and 17 percent are 55 and older.

By 2025, the business of selling pot is set to reach $24.1 billion and create more than 300,000 jobs. However, the industry is still highly regulated with no protection from federal law. Acquiring a loan and setting up a shop is a difficult process with lots of red tape, and advertising is tricky, even as social acceptance of marijuana is growing rapidly. At this time, some dispensaries are cash-only operations because of the uncertain legal climate.

However, the tides are changing, and with the cannabis industry in the midst of an open revolution, discussions about marijuana consumption has become less taboo. It’s possible that the government will soon follow suit.

What Size Pet Door Should You Buy?

If you’re a pet owner, you’ll know how often your pet wants to go outside. The convenient solution for their outside needs would be a pet door. Don’t know where to start? Well, we’ve made it a lot easier for you!

Today’s infographic can help you choose the most suitable size of pet door as per the breed of your furry friend. Once you have decided to buy a pet door, your first consideration will be its size. Pet doors are not a ‘one size fits all’ deal and the dimensions will vary as per the size of your pet. For example, I own two chihuahuas, so I would need a 6” x 7” door.

The bigger the pet, the larger the door you’ll need. If you’re not confident in buying the door right away, no problem. Test out the size of the door by making a cardboard cut out of the dimensions recommended. It’ll give you the perfect image of what your door would look like.

I hope you get the perfect idea of what size pet door you’ll need for your new best friend. If you need more help on how much to spend on your furry friend, here are the costs for owning a pet.

How To Find Your Dream Job In 2018

Hiring trends continue to change as the world evolves — what worked in 2008 won’t work today. We can credit technology for a lot of these changes —  more than 43 percent of U.S. employees have worked remotely at some time. As a job seeker, your expectations and your knowledge will help you land your dream job. Find out more about recruitment trends in the U.S.

Both remote work and artificial intelligence are expected to skyrocket this year and continue growing. If you’re worried about robots taking your job, you don’t have to sweat yet — AI won’t replace human workers anytime soon. In most offices, it’ll only assist in the hiring process.

That means that standing out from the competition is more important than anything else, especially if recruiters begin to use tools to automatically eliminate candidates. Sharpen up the resume, do your research on your target company, and come up with a good story about why you should work there.  Video interviews are also expected to increase as the year goes on — it can help recruiters assess whether you’d be a good fit for the position.

Employers are also expected to make the application process easier so that candidates don’t leave feeling burned out. Applications will become shorter and instructions will be more clear, so finding the dream job will be much easier than it was in the past. If all else fails, you can create your dream job.

The Future of Self-Driving Cars

Entrepreneurship has always driven the boundaries in the automobile industry, from the first car created by Karl Benz in 1886 to Henry Ford’s assembly lines that began mass-producing the Model T in 1913.The current push for self-driving cars is no different. In the long run, removing human error from the driving equation will likely make roads much safer. Self-driving cars uses sensors that “see” 360 degree around them, and autonomous cars are never distracted from the task of driving. At best, people have a 200-degree field of vision, lose focus easily, and let emotions get the best of them, whether it’s succumbing to road rage or checking our phones.

Safer and more efficient roadways will lead to fewer fatalities, lower insurance costs, less traffic, and reduced fuel consumption. However, there are obstacles blocking the widespread use of self-driving cars, and the most serious ones make headlines that create concern. For these reasons, consumers are wary of the technology. Some municipalities have even banned the use of self-driving cars.

The fear is so rampant that 56% of U.S. adults say they would not ride in an autonomous car, according to the Pew Research Center. Regardless, the main players in the self-driving car race — iconic names like Tesla, Apple, and Uber — keep moving forward with improved autonomous technology. Tesla founder Elon Musk believes that in ten years, most cars coming off the assembly line will be autonomous, and he is angry that some reports focus only on the negative side of self-driving vehicles.

“They should be writing a story about how autonomous cars are really safe,” Musk said in a recent earnings call. “But that’s not the story that people want to click on. They write inflammatory headlines that are fundamentally misleading to readers. It’s really outrageous.”

Maybe Musk is right. Since January 20, 2016, there have been four fatalities involving cars that were driving at some level of autonomy, and across the globe, an average of 3,287 people die each day in automobile accidents. Autonomous cars might provide a solution to these tragic numbers.

5 Ways To Make Your Workplace More Productive

Most workplaces encourage you to take breaks, but when you are working, you’re supposed to be productive. But what do you do if you can’t focus?

Your workplace environment can be the key to boosting your productivity levels. This is mainly because a lot of offices and workplaces aren’t designed to boost focus and communication, making it more difficult for employees to find their productivity strike.

In fact, workplace design has been shown to increase (or decrease) your work output. Check today’s infographic to see how your office measures up, and pay attention to the five ways to increase productivity!

For example, a Cornell University study found that workers exposed to low noise were more stressed than others exposed to zero noise. There’s a reason to spring for noise-canceling headphones!

Another interesting find? The colors on your walls can have a big impact on your daily performance. If you can convince your employer to paint the walls green or blue, you could find yourself getting more done. If you want to start small, you could get a bright poster with those colors!

Studies are showing that traditional office spaces don’t work well for fostering collaborative, innovative and productive workplaces. Open office spaces that encouraged idea sharing and collaboration make it easier for everyone to enjoy the workday. Make sure you forward today’s infographic to your boss!

Is That Opinion Hate Speech? Here’s A Checklist To Find Out

Words are powerful, and a simple tweet or social media post can quickly go viral. But should journalists cover every hateful thing that’s said by someone in the public eye? Better yet, how do you determine whether something is actually hate speech?

There is a fine line between informing the public and giving people with hateful views a platform to advertise their position and possibly recruit others. For socially-conscious journalists, it can be difficult to ignore the repercussions their pieces might have once they are released to the masses.

Hate speech is any expression serving to vilify any given group of people that encourages harm to a group’s members. But because the U.S. has wide First Amendment protections, it’s difficult to actually know whether something is hate speech that shouldn’t be shared by a news reporter. If someone espouses hate for a group based on gender, race or any other factor, should they be ignored? On the other hand, legitimate concerns about freedom and people’s safety shouldn’t lead to unwarranted censorship.

It’s a journalist’s job to differentiate between hate speech that doesn’t need additional attention and a controversial opinion to avoid silencing valid criticism of dominant values or institutions. If you’re a communicator, you must fight cynicism and spread knowledge through your work. When in doubt, this five-point checklist will help you decide whether something has news value.

The Fourth Of July By The Numbers

Anyone who’s taken a basic U.S. history class knows the significance of July 4. It’s America’s Independence Day and a celebration of the country becoming free. But 1776 isn’t the only important number related to the holiday.

Today’s infographic is from The History Channel, and it has everything you need to know about July 4 from the 18th century until present day. Did you know 13 of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were under 35? In today’s world, they wouldn’t be old enough to run for U.S. Senator!

Even though July 4 was clearly a monumental day, it didn’t become a federal holiday until 1941, although states like Maryland celebrated long before it was officially declared a holiday. President George Washington marked the second anniversary of Independence Day by giving his soldiers extra rum.

Today, most Americans attend a fireworks show, and 1 in 4 people will set off their own fireworks. If you aren’t one for fireworks, you’ll probably still attend a BBQ and eat a hot dog — 150 million weiners are consumed on the holiday nationwide.

The team at Daily Infographic wishes you a fun-filled, safe holiday!

How Remote Employees Can Become Team Leaders

This isn’t your grandmother’s job market. Most jobs today are increasingly mobile, which requires flexibility from employees.  From having your IT crew on the other side of the world to working from home and saving money on a babysitter, remote work allows a ton of opportunities.

This means that traditional leadership schemes aren’t working anymore. So how can you increase productivity and manage a team in today’s global workplace? When it comes down to it, remote teams aren’t that different from traditional ones. If you have a great team, distance won’t change that. On the other hand, teams that have a hard time with communication will fall apart when working remotely.

The real secret to effective remote work is having a plan and a process in place. When every member of the team knows their role and has an understanding of expectations, it’s way easier for everybody to be organized and for you to excel as a manager.

The other advantage of a clear process? Team leaders can delegate more effectively based on everybody’s strengths, lessening the tendency to micromanage every step of the way. Undoubtedly, working remotely is a challenge for some people, but it also offers a chance to achieve a true work-life balance.

This Is One Of The Most Effective Stress Relievers For Teenagers

If you’re out of your teen years, you may have forgotten how difficult they can be. That tumultuous time is incredibly difficult and messy — but there’s an easy way to get rid of some of that stress.

School sports have been shown to help ward off teenage angst. Some people may scoff at the idea of teenagers needing a place to blow off some steam when they don’t have bills or many responsibilities, but it’s not easy to face societal and academic pressure at a young age.

In fact, 27 percent of teens experience extreme stress during the school year, and 31 percent say their stress has increased over the previous 12 months. Perhaps even more worrisome: 34 percent expect stress to increase within the next year.

Whether you’re a teenager or the parent of a high schooler, a team sport is a great option. Exercise can help reduce stress and give kids an opportunity to bond with each other.  However, it’s important to note that young athletes will still experience an ample amounts of stress.

Balancing practice times with homework isn’t always easy, and some kids may get nervous when all eyes are on them. Additionally, some sports have higher injury rates. But don’t worry —as long as you know your boundaries and educate yourself on to how to prevent injuries, you’ll be fine.

How To Choose An Online Casino

You can do pretty much anything online these days — pay your bills, catch up with friends, and even order next week’s groceries. So why should casinos be any different? Thanks to the power of technology, you can visit a casino without leaving the comfort of your home. Before you decide to trust an online casino website, you have to make sure it’s a trustworthy place that will provide a good experience for you.  Fair warning, make sure you understand the psychology of gambling before playing in a casino, and don’t gamble anything you can’t afford to lose!

First, make sure the casino is licensed. That information should be displayed prominently on the casino’s homepage, and it makes sure that you aren’t falling into the wrong hands. Next, check to see who’s providing the games. Top-notch casinos have trusted game providers, which means you have a bigger chance of winning.

Once that’s all squared away, read the Terms & Conditions on the casino’s website. Any provider that’s offering a fair game will make sure they’re clear about how it works in the fine print.

Today’s infographic provides even more insight into the world of online casinos. Some don’t even require cash, and it’s even possible to look for the best bitcoin casino if that’s what you prefer.  Play responsibly!

16 Ways To Help Your Dog Fight The Summer Heat

In case you somehow missed it, it’s extremely hot outside in most of the U.S. right now. As you relax by the pool with popsicles in-hand, there’s someone else you should consider: Your dog. Feeding and walking Fido isn’t the only thing you need to do right now. Even though dogs are somewhat self-sufficient animals, they require our help to stay healthy on scorching summer days.

Dogs have their own mechanisms to cope with hot weather, but sometimes the temperature is just too high for them to respond adequately. Luckily, this infographic has a number of ways to help your dog beat the heat.

Some of the solutions sound silly at first glance — most Rottweilers probably wouldn’t tolerate dog boots. Most of the suggestions are easy to pull off and require only slight tweaks to what you’re already doing.

Keeping your house cool and your furry friend hydrated will ensure maximum comfort. Avoid leaving your dog in your hot car, and don’t go on walks when the heat is brutal. Winter will be here before we know it, but until then, do your best to stay cool.

What Is The Internet Of Things? Learn More About How It Affects Your Life

The internet of things is coming to get you! Just kidding — you’ve already fallen into its trap. But that’s not a bad thing. The term sounds vaguely scary, but it just means technology is rapidly changing.

We can connect to the Internet through our phones and computers, but also our refrigerators, thermometers and security systems. A friend purchased a wireless printer that also plays music. I think it’s cool, but I’m also thinking, “Why does it exist?” Music won’t make a printer more efficient, but I suppose it makes the whole experience a little more pleasurable.

And according to this infographic, technology and the Internet only stand to become a bigger part of our lives in the next two years. Experts predict that by 2020, each person will have 26 smart objects, which means that we’ll become even more reliant on technology than we already are. Forget the Roomba or voice-activated stereo systems. Soon, we’ll look like the characters in Wall-E who whiz around on hover chairs and are fed by robot machines.

If you already use that voice-to-text app to send the text messages you’re too lazy to type, then you’ve embraced the internet of things. It’ll only get more interconnected from here.
