Top 10 Longest Rivers in the World


1. Nile, Africa



With the length of 6,650 km, the river Nile is recognized as the longest river in the world and the queen of rivers. It springs from two main sources: the Lake Victoria in Uganda and Tana in Ethiopia, respectively known as White Nile and Blue Nile, and flows in the Mediterranean Sea. The river Nile passes through the largest desert - Sahara and therefore could be described as life-giving force of the African desert territories. It is certainly remarkable for the fact that exactly the valley of the Nile is one of the cradles of human civilization. This is the place where the ancient Egypt Empire occurred with its significant cultural, historical and archaeological achievements.

2. Amazon, South America



Amazon River is 6,400 km long. It originates from the glaciers of Mount Nevado Mismi in southern Peru. Amazon passes through the richest in flora and fauna forest system in the world. In the Amazon jungle is located approximately one third of the known species on the planet, as with any expedition, scientists discovered there are always new species. Biodiversity in the river itself is also quite impressive as it is considered that only fishes are over 3,000 species. There is no other river with such a wide variety of species. The most interesting inhabitants of the river are the Piranhas and Piraruco, which is the largest freshwater fish, which could rich 4 meters in length.

3. Chang Jiang (Yangtze), China



Chang Jiang is the longest river in China and is the third longest river in the world after Nile and Amazon with its length of 6300 km. Along with Huang He, Yangtze River is believed to be the cradle of Chinese civilization. Since ancient times the river has been important transportation and trade route, as it passes through some of the largest and most important cities of China. Along the river one can feel the incredible harmony between the nature and the river itself and sense the exotic spirit of Orient. Lots of marvellous landscapes and picturesque sights could be seen along the Yangtze. Some of the most remarkable landmarks in China are located precisely in this area. The most significant among them are the City of White Emperor and 20 beautiful mountain peaks, which are called Peaks of goddesses.

4. Mississippi-Missouri-Red Rock, USA

5. Huang He, China



The Yellow River or Huang He is the second longest river in China - 5,464 km. Originating from the Kunlun Mountains, in western China, the river was named for the massive quantities of yellow silt Huang He carries to its delta. Ever since the earliest and ancient civilization in China settled down on the banks of the river, it has become source of life and death. After multiple major floods, the worst of which occurred in 1931, Huang He has been known as "the River of Sorrow". Nowadays the river is used as a bringer of commerce, because of the many ships in different sizes, which still sail up down the river, as they have done for centuries.

6. Yenisei, Russia



It is definitely the historic Russian river, called "Great River" and the system it forms the largest one (5,539 km), flowing into the Arctic Ocean. 7. Ob, Russia



Ob is the fourth largest river in Russia and flows for approximately 5,410 km in the western part of Siberia. The river is formed near the city of Biysk by the merger of Biya River, which flows from the lake Teletskoye. Characteristic for the river Ob is that in its middle course it flows through the Taiga region and this way covers the wet marshlands and coniferous forests. Ob freezes for around six months and in the rest of the year is used for transportation or fishing. Another major utility that the river is known for is hydroelectricity generation.

8. Parana, South America



Parana River is the second in length in South America (4,880 km), it flows from the state of Parana in Brazil and its largest tributary is the River Paraguay. One of the most spectacular and majestic waterfalls on Earth - Iguazu and the worlds largest hydropower plant - Itaipu, are located in the basin of Parana. The Parana and its tributaries are source of daily sustenance and income for plenty of fishermen who live along its banks. Much of the length of the river is used as an important waterway, as it is navigable and serves as a link between the inland cities in Argentina and Paraguay, and the ocean.

9. Congo (Zaire), Congo



Recognized as the deepest river in the world, Congo River is the most powerful Africa and is also the ninth longest river on the planet (4,700 km). 10. Irtysh, Russia



Irtysh (4,248 km) is the largest tributary of the Ob River and together with it forms a major basin in Asia. In the surroundings of the river could be found wide number of architectural monuments, natural and historical sites and fabulous tourist destinations. When Irtysh does not freeze, foreign boats, passengers and tankers navigate the river. To the significance of the river from economical point of view contributes the fact that major hydroelectric plants at Bakhtarminsk and Ust-Kamenogorsk use the Irtysh River near the Chinese-Kazakhstan border.
