Top 10 Weird Tourist Attractions around the World

1. Carhenge, Nebraska

Carhenge is a contemporary artistic reflection of the legendary Stonehenge. Despite bearing a similar magnetic appeal, it was not created by mystical forces or extraterrestrial intelligence, but by a man named Jim Reinders. An intriguing composition of 38 gray-painted old cars, arranged in a similar way to the stone sanctuary, the Carhenge resembles the historical monument to the extent that you can compare photos of the two sites and find it hard to distinguish structural differences!

2. Chernobyl, Ukraine

A notorious emblem of tragedy and death for decades, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and the nearby Ukrainian town of Prypiat are one of the most feared spots to visit in the world. The plant is the central stage of the 1986 nuclear calamity, when an explosion causes a massive leak of radiation, eventually leading to the demise of thousands of people. It is hard to imagine what would spur people to visit these lands, but the fact is that in recent years this destination attracts many tourists, willing to put themselves to the risk of entering the radioactive zone. Today the ghost town is nothing but empty buildings, abandoned after the Chernobyl disaster of 1986. Police control guards the access to the area.

3. The Catacombs of Paris, France

Just a moment spent in the dark realms of the Catacombs of Paris will effectuate most vivid nightmares. This ominous attraction of the otherwise romantic city is an intricate network of tunnels, criss-crossing 320 kilometers beneath the whole metropolis. It dates from the late 18th century, when the Government decided to transfer the existing cemetery in unused underground tunnels, because it occupied valuable land for new development. Thus, the walls and ceilings of the Catacombs are "decorated" with bones and skulls of nearly seven million Parisians.

4. The Skeleton Church, Czech Republic

What more sinister way to feel the occult and spiritual, than being surrounded by bones and skulls?! While small in proportions for a Roman Catholic chapel, the Skeleton Church is certainly a view to behold as its interior abounds with skeleton parts. The ossuary is estimated to contain the skeletons of between 40,000 and 70,000 people, many of whom have had their bones aesthetically arranged to form intricate wall designs, chandeliers and furnishings for the house of prayer.

5. Bubblegum Alley, California

An unusual landmark in downtown San Luis Obispo that redefines the idea and purpose of the common chewing gum, the Bubblegum Alley has gained an international fame as one of the strangest attractions. At first glance it may seem unhygienic and filthy, though this famous backstreet is thoroughly cleaned on regular basis. The 20 m of gum covered walls, besprent  with various shapes and arrangements of thousands of bubblegum, are unique not only for the material used to shape these forms, but because it gives everyone a chance to contribute to public art with their own creative expression.

6. Cadillac Ranch, Texas

Created more than thirty years ago by Doug Michels, Chip Lord and Hudson Marquez, the sculpture consists of semi-buried used Cadillacs, positioned at the same angle as the Pyramid of Giza. 7. Racetrack Playa, California

Racetrack Playa is a dry lake, located in Death Valley National Park in USA. The flat dry land is grooved by millions of geometric shapes, which are a result of the hot climate. Despite its simplicity at first glance, Racetrack Playa is a unique location, home to one of the most astonishing, yet unexplained phenomena in the world. Here, rocks move by themselves without any intervention by humans or animals - a fact that continues to dazzle scientists, who have failed to find an adequate logical explanation.

8. Karni Mata Temple, India

Beautiful marble carvings and complex decoration cover the surfaces of Karni Mata, while little rat feet scurry around - simply an idyllic scene. Legends tell that the rodents, living in the temple, are family members and servants of the goddess Karni, who have been reincarnated in rats during the 14th century. Today, the religious complex, set in the small town of Deshnoke, India, houses about 20,000 rats, which are under the protection of the place of worship and are considered sacred animals. Rats live freely, scampering along the halls and their water and leftovers are considered to bring luck and fortune. Spotting one of the 4-5 albino rodents is believed to be especially auspicious. If you happen to accidentally kill one of the holy little inhabitants, you must pay its weight in gold.

9. Aokigahara, Japan

The forest Aokigahara is situated in the foothills of Mount Fuji in Japan and is often referred to as "the sea of trees.” These lands, bounded in ice and hard rocks, are filled with mysticism and paranormal phenomenons. Sometimes there are human remains in the depths of the woods that consist of scattered bones and incomplete skeletons. Aokigahara is the second most popular place for committing suicide after the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Since the 50s of the last century, hundreds of people have taken their own lives there, with a record of 78 in 2002. The high number of deaths has prompted authorities to put up signs all over the area imploring people with such intentions to seek help and support, instead of killing themselves.

10. Truk Lagoon, Micronesia

Truk Lagoon is located in a volcanic valley in Micronesia, which is part of the Caroline Islands. A true exhibit of ghosts of the past, today it is a diving paradise where you can find sixty warships and aircraft carriers, sunk during the WWII. Most of their crews died in these deep vast waters. Pieces of masks, sake cups or the remains of human bodies are scattered all over the place, reminiscent of the once vivid bustle that filled the spaces on board. Ships corrode very quickly and most of them have turned into beautiful coral reefs. Truk Lagoon is a real proof of the destructive and devastating effect of war.
