KV Anand once again shines as a director in his latest release Kavan. The film basically deals with the running of a successful TV channel and how the media sensationalize news to boost TRP's and thereby gets financial benefits.
Thilak (Vijay Sethupathi) is a young and talented journalist, who wants to achieve big in media and to his luck, he gets a perfect launch pad in Zen One, a leading TV channel owned by Kalyan (Akashdeep Saighal). He meets Malar (Madonna), his ex-flame in college, who WORKS in the same channel and love blooms again. Though Thilak finds the initial process interesting, the moment he is exposed to murky side of the machinations and the manner in which news is twisted and packaged to increase the TRP’s, he is upset.
After Thilak's unexpected honest live interview with a politicianDheeran Maniarasu (Bose Venkat), who is a close friend of Kalyan goes awry, our hero and his friends decide to walk out. Now Thilak and gang join a little known TV channel owned by Mayilvaganan (T Rajendar). The rest of the film is all about how the young team unmasks the corrupt side of the TRP driven channel.
The film's biggest strength is the highly entertaining first half and the authenticity in capturing the underground politics in TV channels, especially the interval block which is a scream. The live chat show of Vijay Sethupathi and Bose Venkat has plenty of clap worthy moments. But things turn upside down in the second half with predictable scenes diluting the screenplay and the prolonged climax which is predictable, exaggerated and too convenient.
Vijay Sethupathi completely steals the show with his witty one liners and natural performance. Madonna Sebastian is quite good in a well written role while Akashdeep Saighal is convincing. The rest of the actors like Vikranth, T Rajendar, Pandiraj, Jagan and Bose Venkat shines.
Abinandhan Ramanujam has perfectly captured the happening inside a TV studio and his constantly moving frames provide a racy feel to the film whereas Hiphop Tamizha's music is just average. On the whole, Kavan is a well-made commercial film. It has its highs and lows, but delivers a solid kick.
