Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam Movie Review

Director: Ponram
Cast: Sivakarthikeyan, Sri Divya, Suri

Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam (VVS) is a jolly good fun ride. The laugh-spinning line-up of Sivakarthikeyan, Soori and Sathyaraj makes it enjoyable to the hilt.

What works big-time for the film are the dialogues of Rajesh M, the most successful comedy director in Kollywood today and debutant director Ponram’s packaging. Their job is to tickle the audience’s funny bone.

The story is wafer thin and can be written in one page. Bosepandi (Sivakarthikeyan) is a jolly good fellow in a small village who runs a club for youngsters mainly loafers! He locks horn with the highly egoistic and arrogant village chief Sivanandi (Sathyaraj) over the running of the local festival leading to friction. And its total bedlam when Bose falls for Sivanadi’s daughter (Sri Divya)!

VVS is able to keep you engrossed for 2 hours and 38 minutes only because of the gags and the perfect casting. Sivakarthikeyan is terrific as Bosepandi because he makes this yarn look so believable on screen with his body language, eyes and dialogue delivery.

Soori plays his friend to perfection with his easy laid back role in a rural setting. Sri Divya is pretty and is apt with her girl-next door looks and Bindu Madhavi in a cameo is the scene stealer as the teacher.

And finally director Ponram smartly puts the most solid of actors , Sathyaraj at the heart of this slapstick madness. He is able to convey toughness and at the same time has impeccable comic timing. The climax twist is one of the highlights of the film.

One of the major plus of the film is D Imman’s music which blends perfectly with the rural theme of the film. “Oodha Color Ribbon…” is the pick of the lot while “Paarkathey…” is also a lovely melody. Balasubramaniyam’s camera gives it the rural Theni feel. On the downside there is no story, just a couple of gags and funny situations put together and could have been trimmed.

Ponram through VVS follows the comedy template set by his guru Rajesh and blends them with his hero Sivakarthikeyan’s image. Add D Imman’s peppy melodies with a rural touch and you get a mass comedy entertainer. Escape Artists Motion Pictures, the producers of VVS had promised in their promotions that it is a laugh riot, and they have delivered big time.

VVS gets a solo big release

It’s confirmed Escape Artists Motion Pictures Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam (VVS) starring Sivakarthikeyan will get a big solo release on September 6. The other release Vishal’s Madha Gadha Raja has been postponed.

Now VVS will get a big solo release in nearly 350 screens all over Tamil Nadu. It is going to be Sivakarthikeyan’s biggest ever release in terms of number of screens.

The Ponram directed VVS has Sivakarthikeyan, Sathyaraj, Soori and Sri Devika. D Imman’s music is already a chartbuster. It is going to be Sivakarthikeyan’s hat-trick film for the year after  Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga and Ethir Neechal.

A clean well-made family entertainer: Sivakarthikeyan

Sivakarthikeyan successfully completed a whirlwind tour of Tamil Nadu, prior to the release of his Varuthapadatha Vaalibar Sangam (VVS) on September 6. VVS produced by P Madan of Escape Artists Motion Pictures and directed by Ponram is an out and out mass comedy entertainer.

In an exclusive interview, Sivakarthikeyan spoke about VVS and his promotional tour.

How was the VVS promotional tour?
It was a grand success. I travelled nearly 1600 kilometers across the state promoting the film in Coimbatore, Salem, Trichy, Tirunelveli and Madurai and then came back to Chennai. The response has been too good as huge crowds greeted me at all theatres where the promotional activity took place.

What kind of promotions did you do?
We followed the same pattern followed at the VVS audio launch in Chennai. Two songs and trailers of the film were screened and I interacted with the audiences and local media. In fact I even sang the song I had sung in the film.

Where did you get the idea to go on a tour of the state before the release of the film?
The team at Escape Artists had been planning to promote the film in a big way. We were all impressed the way Shah Rukh Khan promoted Chennai Express weeks before its release. And the way he came to Chennai to promote the film also worked to its advantage.

So you believe that promotions are important for the success of a film?
I believe good content needs promotions to reach across to the masses. I personally feel VVS is a good film and it has to be promoted to create the impact around the product. Now after my tour I’m convinced that there will be a recall value surrounding the film.

How has VVS shaped out?
It is a clean well-made family entertainer that has all necessary mass entertainment ingredients. The songs of D Imman are already a big plus for the film.

VVS is a blockbuster - The Economics

Sivakarthikeyan’s Escape Artist Motion Pictures P Madan’s Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam (VVS) has slowly but surely turned out to be a blockbuster. The film released in 343 screens in Tamil Nadu and netted approximately an awesome Rs 27. 35 Cr in 17 days!

VVS released on September 6 and was an instant hit and took Rs 10.25 Cr in its first three days (Sep 6 to 8 ), phenomenal for a non-superstar film. The film worked as it was a family entertainer and had the rising star Sivakarthikeyan along with D Imman’s peppy music and 360 degrees promotions.

The economics of Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam

Cost
Production Cost  =     Rs 7 Crore
Promotions, Publicity & Prints  = Rs 4.5  Crore

Total                          =  Rs 11.5 Cr

Returns
TN Theatrical collections  = Rs 16.5 Cr ( 60%  of 17 days Net of Rs 27.35 Cr)
Satellite Television Rights  = Rs 4.5 Cr
Audio Rights                      = Rs 0.35 lakhs
Overseas Theatrical rights = Rs 0.55 lakhs
Rest of India Theatrical Rights  = Rs 0. 30 lakhs
Telugu, Kannada, Hindi Remake Rights valued = Rs 1.0 Cr

Total Approximate Returns = Rs 23. 2 Cr

Profit = Return on Investment Rs 23.2 Cr – 11.5 Cr  Actual cost of production and marketing = Rs 11.7 Crore

VVS Profit  = Rs 11.7 Crore.

Please note VVS is still running successfully all over Tamil Nadu, and is to release in second set (C stations) for the Navarathri festival. It has potential to garner another Rs 2 to Rs 3 Cr in its life time run.

VVS is 2013’s biggest hit if you take only return on investment.
