Suriya is celebrating his 39th birthday today (July 23). He is chilling it out with family in Chennai. Yesterday the songs of his Anjaan was premiered and later in the night, the team had a birthday celebration. He cut a huge digital cake with Anjaan logo with friends and Anjaan team.

Today Suriya features as one of the hottest stars in the Kollywood trade. He has not only a huge market in Tamil Nadu but has a strong presence in rest of India and overseas. His Telugu dubbing command a huge price.

'Anjaan' audio review

Anjaan starring Surya, Samantha, Soori, Vidyut Jamwal & Manoj Bajpai is one of the most anticipated movies which is being produced by UTV motion pictures & Thirrupathi Brothers. Yuvan Shankar Raja helms the music reigns once more after his previous success with Lingusamy in movies like Sandakozhi,Paiyaa & Vettai. Let's see what the album has in stores for us:

Bang Bang
Singers: Ranjith
Lyrics: Madhan Karky
Already popular thanks to the teaser, Bang Bang sets the tone for the entire album with its power packed tune.  This number which sounds like the hero introduction song is laced with lyrics depicting the characterization of Raju Bhai.  There is heavy usage of electric guitar & synthesizers throughout the song and is sure to be youngster's favorite track of the album.

Oru Kan Jaadai
Singers: Benny Dayal, Shweta Pandit
Lyrics: Viveka
Oru Kan Jaadai is a romantic rock number with heavy percussion arrangements.  The chord progressions and the minute scale shifts elevate the song to a different level.  Benny Dayal totally dominates the rendition and the grandeur in the instrumentation is pretty visible.  The song gets progressively better with every listen and is sure to set the playlists on fire.

Ek Do Theen
Singers: Suriya, Andrea Jeremiah
Lyrics: Na.  Muthukumar
Ek Do Theen is the cynosure of the entire album as it marks the debut of Suriya as a singer who does a neat job behind the microphone.  The song starts off with an Arabic touch only to be taken over by 'Dhol' beats synched to Suriya & Andrea's singing.  This is a typical dance number catered to the masses and is sure to sizzle along with the visuals.

Kaadhal Aasai
Singers: Sooraj Santhosh, Yuvan Shankar Raja
Lyrics: Kabilan
Kaadhal Aasai is a quintessential Yuvan Shankar Raja melody where the composer takes us on a ride back to his Pogadhe Pogadhe & Povodhe Prema days.   The song has a strong Hindustani touch as well and it is indeed a pleasant number.   The high pitched portions are sung incredibly well by Yuvan and dholak finds an interesting usage in this romantic, slow number.  The Oor Kuzhandhai segment is the catchiest part of the whole song.

Sirippu En
Singers: M.  M Manasi
Lyrics: Viveka
Sirippu En is the much talked about Chitrangada Singh's item number.   This track will be effectively played multiple times in clubs and parties.  Manasi does a terrific job with the humming in particular.  The lyrics by Viveka are aimed at the masses and the prelude deserves special mention as it is mighty catchy.  The charanam portions have a second layer of synthesizers accompanying them and the bagpipe section near the end is impressive too.

On the whole, Anjaan is a complete package catering to the fans of all genres consisting of a melody, rock, item number & a folkish number.  Yuvan Shankar Raja makes sure he blends his experimentation along with the mass expectations.  The 'Lingusamy-Yuvan Shankar Raja' track record is intact!

Picks of the album: Bang Bang, Oru Kan Jaadai, Ek Do Theen

Vidyut’s character in ‘Anjaan’

It seems for the first time Vidyut Jamwal the menacing villain of ‘Thuppakki’ and ‘Billa 2’ will be playing a positive role in ‘Anjaan’ which is gearing up for a grand release within a few weeks. Vidyut opened up about his character in the Suriya-Samantha starrer for the first time in a recent media interaction. He has said that he is not playing the villain role in the film and he will be a partner with Suriya in all his activities throughout the film. He also keeps the guessing games on a high by saying that the twist in the film revolves around his character.

Having acted in three Tamil films, Vidyut says he has picked up the language to the extent of mouthing his dialogues while shooting for the film. However when asked to speak something from his head he remembers only one dialogue “Ivan Budhisali illai” (he is not intelligent) which he speaks in one of his films.

‘Anjaan’ has been directed by N.Lingusamy as a stylish gangster flick. Music has been scored by Yuvan Shankar Raja whose songs for the film released recently and has started topping the charts.

'Anjaan' game launched in Chennai

Suriya's Anjaan has been in the news of late thanks to its Yuvan Shankar Raja chartbusters and a stylish trailer. In order to reach out to the youngsters as well, the makers recently launched a mobile game in association with Vroovy, a joint venture of Hungama and Gameshastra.

The mobile game titled 'Anjaan Race Wars' was launched in an event in the presence of Suriya, director Lingusamy, UTV South Head G Dhananjayan and writer Brinda Sarathy. The concept of this mobile game involves the caricatured character of Suriya chasing the baddies and goons in a car.

Speaking at the event, Hungama's Siddhartha Roy was confident of the game's success and explained about the game in detail. There was also a live demonstration of the game along with the storyboard. The game is said to be available in all Android & iOS platforms.

Director Lingusamy assured the fans that the movie will also be racy much like the game and informed that the movie is ready and will release on August 15th as announced before.

Suriya confessed he likes playing video games too and was invigorated over the new concept of developing a game based on the film’s theme which has taken the film’s expectation a notch higher.

Kollywood producers say "Chalo Mumbai"!

Suriya's eagerly awaited Lingusamy directed Anjaan is getting censored today (July 30) in Mumbai.

Why is a Tamil film getting censored in Mumbai? Well the 'queue' outside the regional Chennai office of Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is too long.

The Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) the apex body of film producers is peeved with the regional CBFC in Chennai. Tamil films are not getting censored as there is considerable slowdown in censoring of films due to lack of 'certifying members'.  In the last one week only two films have been censored, and there is a long line of Tamil films which are waiting for censor certificate.

Once a Tamil film is censored depending on the certification they can approach state government for entertainment tax exemption and finalise their release date. Anjaan slated for release on August 15, has to wait in the queue if it has to censored in Chennai. So produce took CBFC offer to get it viewed and censored in Mumbai, which will enable them to stick to August 15 release.

Last week Vijay Antony's Salim got censored in Mumbai. Similarly those who are looking at an early release date, are now more or less reconciled to the idea of getting it censored in Mumbai.

Two weeks back TFPC, Hon Secretary T Siva had written a letter to Prakash Javadker the Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting, about the emergency situation prevailing regarding censoring of films. But he is yet to get a reply and the situation has worsened.

Suriya charms Kochi media & fans!

Suriya, Thirrupathy Brothers and UTV Motion Pictures are taking film promotions to a new height with their forthcoming Lingusamy directed Anjaan.

On Saturday (Aug 2), the team flew to Kochi from Chennai for promoting the film releasing on August 15.

Suriya and the team spent the entire day in Kochi amidst fans and the media. Suriya, Lingusamy and G.Dhananjayan of UTV Motion Pictures met the fans at the prestigious single screen Kavitha in Ernakulam . Thousands of fans of the actor from various parts of the state converged at Kavitha.

Suriya gave a 10 minute speech and the fans went crazy.  Anjaan songs and teasers were screened for selected audiences. Later Suriya held a media meet at his hotel and went on to give 'exclusive' interviews to nearly 15 Malayalam channels, half a dozen FM stations, and internet and blog sites. 52 fan association secretaries took individual pics with the actor!

The distributors of Anjaan in Kerala were overjoyed as all this will go to hype the film to new levels and film will surely take an earth shaking opening in Kerala. The film is likely to release in 170 screens in Kerala, the highest for a Suriya film.

Dhananjayan who organised the entire promotions was beaming at the end of the day. "Suriya sir's charisma, star power and dedication made the Anjaan promotions in Kochi a huge success. Had a great visit and fans response in pouring rain was something that had to be seen. Memorable theatre visit, a good press meet and separate interviews to media. It went off very well."

After his whirlwind promotions in Kochi, Suriya almost missed his evening flight. In fact he just managed to get on the return flight!

'Anjaan' trailer rocks!

The new trailer of Suriya's Lingusamy directed Anjaan was premiered today (Aug 8 ) morning on a popular music channel. The 2 minute 34 seconds theatrical trailer has all mass elements mixed in the right proposition and looks slick and stylish.

In the trailer for the first time Suriya's character the gangster Raju Bhai physically challenged younger brother Krishna wearing glasses is shown for the first time.

The highlight of the trailer is BGM of Yuvan Shankar Raja and beautiful camera of Santosh Sivan who has come out with some terrific visuals and fast cutting of editor Antony.

Samantha looks smashing and the Goa song with Suriya is very glamorous. Lingusamy and writer Brinda Sarathy has laced the film with some terrific punchlines, especially the deadly dialogue at the end of the trailer.

The advance booking for Anjaan releasing on August 15 will start over the weekend and it is expected to take a gargantuan opening.

Raju Bhai needed to look stylish: Lingusamy

Director Lingusamy, known for his racy commercial movies like Sandakozhi, Run, Paiyaa & Vettai is geared up for his next release Anjaan.  With sky-high expectations amongst fans, the movie is slated to release on 15th of August.  We had a chance to interact with the man behind Anjaan himself.  Here are the excerpts of the interview:

Your combination with Yuvan always seems to hit the bull’s eye.  What’s the secret behind the success of this combination?
Our composing sessions will always be pretty relaxed.  Myself, Yuvan Shankar Raja & the lyricists will be casually interacting among ourselves talking various other things.  There won’t be a conscious strain to extract the tunes. It always happens naturally.

How did you finalize Suriya'’s look in the movie?
Raju Bhai needed to look stylish.  In order to finalize the look for that character, we researched online.  Suriya, on his part would come up with certain looks and give suggestions.  For the two characters he plays in the movie, we finally zeroed-in on the perfect looks.

Tell us about Samantha's performance in the movie
Samantha is really sharp.  She reads the dialogues thoroughly and keeps repeating them till she goes for the take.  Her expressions and reactions are fantastic too.  I changed the story thrice and every time I would tell her that she is still in the movie and only the story has changed.  I am making my next movie from one of those stories which I narrated initially to Samantha.  She is there in the movie and the male lead will be Karthi.

Any particular scene of Samantha's we need to watch out for?
There is a scene in a car where she has performed superbly.  Also, there is a scene near the roadside where Surya, Samantha & Vidyut converse with each other.  Watch out for her expressions in that scene.

How difficult it is to make movies having songs in its screenplay?
Balaji Sakthivel once told me that songs are the movie's re-recording at that point of screenplay.  Unless the songs are placed aptly, it will detach the audience from the plot and Shankar sir is always one who knows where to perfectly place a song.  In Anjaan, the songs are neatly packaged along with the screenplay.

Your production house seems to be churning out hits after hits.  How do you balance both direction & production?
I like to watch all types of movies.  That aspect helps me to produce movies that are different.  Regarding the production department, I usually listen to the scripts before the project starts and once the movie gets over, I watch it and share my suggestions.  The important part of production- the marketing, the promotions are all done by a dedicated team led by N.  Subash Chandra Bose
