Iraivi-Audio review

Cast: SJ Surya, Vijay Sethupathi, Bobby Simha, Anjali, Kamalini Mukherjee, Pooja Devariya
Music: Santhosh Narayanan
Direction: Karthik Subbaraj

Album Analysis:

Onnu Rendu
Singer: SJ Surya
Quirky is the word! ‘Onnu Rendu’ is essentially ‘Oru Gundu Mani Kulungudhu’ meets
‘Naan Oru Mutaalunga’ type track. The very idea of making SJ Surya render a bar pathos number is a winner! The song has very minimalistic orchestration with its USP being the raw rendition. This is something that’s waiting on the lines to go viral.

 Kadhal Kappal
Singer: Santhosh Narayanan
Signature Santhosh! ‘Kadhal Kappal’ marks the composer returning to his strengths.  Santhosh Narayanan doubles up as the singer and pulls it off well in what could be the only mainstream song of the album. The tune is bombastic and has an instantly likeable attribute to it. Definitely a chartbuster material!

Othaiyile
Singer: Anthony Dasan
As the director revealed in the audio launch, ‘Othaiyile’ is nothing but an iPhone recording of some seriously rough singing by Anthony Dasan done during the eve of the shoot. Laded with almost nil instrumental usage (except for the ‘thaalam’ Anthony Dasan employs), this track is a perfect case study for resource managing on pathos numbers.

Solla Thudikudhu Manasu
Singer: RK Sundar
‘Solla Thudikudhu Manasu’ tries to be a music troupe type number but the lyrics which are conjured up from titles of yesteryear Tamil movies, come across as awkward like fish out of water. The song tries to be in the vintage Ilayaraja mould but hasn't quite come off.

Dhushta
Singers: Meenakshi, Dhee
Here comes the drug of the album! ‘Dhushta’ has a haunting tune, a catchy hook line and some insanely bewitching arrangements. The fast paced humming that features in the teaser is nowhere to be seen in this track. Dhee, fresh from her Irudhi Sutru’s success, leaves a terrific residue with her singing. The high voltage lyrics are impactful and leave us in a dazing effect at the end of its runtime.

Manidhi
Singers: Brinda, Ananthu, Santhosh Narayanan
‘Manidhi’ is a song that is heavily lyric driven and has an anthem like aura to it. In all probabilities, this song is likely to be a montague in the movie. Another highly pleasing number to the ears! On the whole, it is safer to say that Santhosh Narayanan is on the peak of his experimental  prowess in ‘Iraivi’. The entire soundtrack plays out based on the theme of the movie and is heavily driven by the narrative. May not appeal for people who expect the quintessential sing -along type songs. But, this is the future. This is how music albums are going to pan out in the coming years and it is high time we get used to them.
