Pokkiri Raja- Audio Review

Cast: Jiva,Sibiraj,Hansika
Lyrics: Arunraja Kamaraj, Vivek
Music: D.Imman
Direction: Ramprakash Rayappa

Album Analysis:
Athuvutta
Singers: D.Imman
Although this song is being promoted as the face of the album, ‘Athuvutta’ is probably too loud and jarring to appeal instantly. The ‘kuthu’ tune, ‘local’ lyrics with EDM arrangements sound interesting on paper. But, the execution is somewhat middling. Must work with visuals where Jiva is expected to put on the dancing shoes! Vishal Dadlani joins in the reprised version of the song with a mellowed down background. The basic essence and tune is retained from the original version though. One for the masses!

Bubbly Bubbly
Singers: Papon, Maria Roe Vincent
A bit from the composer’s earlier hits ‘Siluku Marame’ & ‘Happy Happy’ mixed in the drier gives us ‘Bubbly Bubbly’. The tune is catchy and the vocals being rendered in a light fashion, the song works instantly. Although Papon’s diction though needs some refining, there is nothing much wrong with this track. One of the better tracks of the album!

Taaru Taara
Singers: Divyakumar
‘Taaru Taara’ has loud arrangements which try hard to evoke a powerful aftereffect. The interludes are straight out of ’10 Endradhukulla’. The instrumentation is too loud and loses connect from the beginning itself. The jarring dubstep, fused EDM-folk beats decorate the song but is mostly left soulless.

Rain Rain Go
Singers: Varun Parandhaman, Neeti Mohan, D.Imman
Album’s best track! The rhythm has an earthy undercurrent to it despite the orchestration and the catchy hook line. Neeti Mohan keeps her midas touch intact. The tune is a sure winner and takes all the cake for the song. Being easily hummable makes this song a potential radio hit!

Waltzing Whistle
Singers: Swetha Suresh
‘Waltzing Whistle’ is a typical Imman track done mainly by a whistle accompanied by the familiar set of string section and violins in the background. Has the potential to be used in the rerecording for a sequence in the movie.

On the whole, ‘Pokkiri Raja’ tries to maintain the dance rhythmic, foot tapping mood throughout the album. Although the results are somewhat middling, the songs have more chance of catching up with the masses when the visuals release.

'Pokkiri Raja' is a south Indian thali meals: Jiiva

Jiiva is upbeat as his ambitious film Pokkiri Raja releases today.

Speaking to US from Palani where he is shooting for his new untitled film Jiiva says: “I am unable to be in Chennai on release day, as combination scenes with lot of actors is happening here. I am nervous but is quite confident that Pokkiri Raja is a neatly packaged entertainer with all the commercial elements that will work with today’s audiences”

About this long gap between releases Jiiva quips: “It was not a deliberate attempt to have a release after a while, as Yaan released almost a year back. I feel that there is a time for everything to happen in life.  2015 was a forgettable year for me but this year is promising with couple of releases in a row. Thirunaal will be my next after Pokkiri Raja”

Speaking about PokkiriRaja, Jiiva says: “ It is a comedy with elements of fantasy thrown in. Sibiraja has a very meaty parallel role and I can promise a full south Indian thali meals for audiences. In short, a roller coaster ride which will move fast”

On working with Hansika for first time, Jiiva smiles: “It was fun and we thoroughly enjoyed doing all the comedy scenes. Most of the comedy in the film is situational”

Pokkiri Raja Review

Director: Ramprakash Rayappa
Cast: Jiiva, Hansika, Sibiraj

Ramprakash Rayappa’s Pokkiri Raja has a terrific idea at its core and we have to definitely appreciate the director for this gutsy attempt. However, a weak back story and tacky CG work disappoints.

Sanjeevani’s (Jiiva) biggest embarrassment in life is his frequent yawning that puts anyone near him to sleep. At one point of time, Sanjeev loses his job and girl friend because of this strange condition, which even earns him the wrath of the local gangster 'cooling glass' Guna (Sibiraj) as the latter loses his eyesight because of the powerful ‘yawn’.

Sanjeevani luckily finds his ladylove Sunitha (Hansika Motwani), who is least bothered about his strange condition and unconditionally supports him. The rest of the film is all about how Sanjeev saves his life from cooling glass Guna with an animated back story on how he got this strange power from his ancestors.

The film really starts off well with the first half packaged as a complete laugh riot. The scenes involving Hansika and Jiiva and Sibiraj’s separate track are filled with a lot of enjoyable one liners. Even the second half has well written comic moments but the thing is the back story is not great and the climax too is not convincing, guess the director was conscious in allotting equal number of scenes to both the heroes, which in turn has affected the flow.

Jiiva is convincing as the sleep inducing Sanjeevani, it needs great guts to act in such an out-of-the-box role and he must be definitely appreciated. Hansika looks super cute and bubbly. Her costumes in  songs are worth mentioning. She scores well with perfect lip-sync and her contribution in the comical scenes deserves a special mention.

Sibiraj is convincing as a comical baddie, his kuthu dance and ‘Kovai’ slang dialogue delivery in the film reminds us of his father, Sathyaraj. Yogi Babu has once again proved his comic timing; he can be rightly utilized as the substitute of Soori or Santhanam in Kollywood.

Technically, Imman’s BGM is biggest strength of Pokkiri Raja. Anji’s visuals are colorful and editor VJ Sabu Joseph should have trimmed down the running time by ten minutes.

Overall, Pokkiri Raja is a decent comedy entertainer and watchable for its unique attempt and an entertaining first half.
