The movies of Ra. Parthiepan always carried some interesting tags in the past and he is all set to serve a new dish with his own panache in ‘Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam’. The title itself makes us pause a bit and click on the snippets about the film. Unlike his previous directorial ventures he is not acting in this movie.

The teaser and the trailer were innovative and the title carries an absorbing tagline – A film without a story. Well, this is how Parthiepan works, his style is entirely different and his ideas are way ahead of the times. It is worth mentioning the trailer of ‘Kudaikkul Mazhai’ and Parthiepan’s interesting word play to attract the audience.

‘KTVI’ boasts a galaxy of stars making their cameo appearances including, Vishal, Arya, Raghava Lawrence, Srikanth, Bharath, Vijay Sethupathy, Vimal, Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, Tapasee, Amala Paul, Cheran, Iniya, & Ishwarya Rajesh. And like the star casts, there is a surprise in music department too. Four music directors have composed a song each and the BGM has been scored by Sathya. C.

Newcomers, Santhosh Prathap, Akhila Kishore, and Dinesh Natarajan are doing the lead roles and Thambi Ramiah is providing the comic relief as well as a pivotal role. The movie is getting released along with ‘Anjaan’ and Parthiepan himself asked the people to watch ‘KTVI’ if they do not get tickets for the Suriya movie. Radhakrishna Partheipan definitely knows how to play his cards to seize the opportunity!

Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam Movie Review

Cast:    Akhila Kishore, Sahithya Jagannathan, Azmathulla shariff, Amala Paul, Arya, Prakash Raj, Taapsee Pannu, Vijay Sethupathi, Vishal, Sivakarthikeyan

Just as much as it is a compelling mode of entertainment, cinema is a tantalising yet vicious maze of opportunity, money making and involves talent combined with a lot of luck to evolve as a success story. Beginning to this arduous endeavour is creativity. However, not all story on paper translates into equally gripping experience on screen. But what if there is no story at all? Four new faces in the pivotal plot and many other equally talented new comers in every frame, with many of the leading stars thrown in as cameo, here comes Parthiepan, marking his stamp once again. But story? The quest for one is the theme of ‘Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam’.

Thamizh (Santhosh ) is a highly talented, yet struggling director, waiting for his big break. His stories are very well appreciated, but that’s the end of the story. However, he has an understanding wife Daksha (Akhila), who agrees to marry Thamizh and also earn for the family, until he finds his feet firm on cine ground. Along with Thamizh are Arvind (Dinesh), Shirley (Sahithya), Murali (Vijay Ram) and most Seenu (Thambi Ramaiah) who all are waiting for their big day in the cine industry, as the extraordinary talents themselves. And they set out to think and think every day on how and what is the story. They are battered for money, Thamizh’s life is twisted out of shape, many a misunderstanding crop up, but there seems to be no end to this tunnel where they want to lock the right story that is both unique and appealing to everyone. In the effort to make an impressive movie for the audience, the team works relentlessly towards a script that should impress a big producer and earn them the ticket to fame. After all, is the impressive story ever realised? There lies the gripping mystery that Parthiepan leaves us to relish and expand our very own creativity on.

The winning formula of this movie is proper understanding of audience’s psychology. The film, as touted, has a very bleak thread of story, but stands super strong on screenplay and Parthiepan’s matchless narration. Thamizh and Daksha make one of the most understanding couple ever. Santhosh through his struggle to strike a healthy balance between a passionate yet unstable career and a romantic and almost eccentric wife, has portrayed the various shades of a man’s emotional battle. Although Daksha’s role might irk a bit, it seems to be the right decision to have taken at every stage. Vijay ensures hearty sparkles of laughter with his timely presence in comedy and equally strong dialogue delivery. Thambi Ramaiah is an extraordinary performer, and has been aptly chosen for this role. His role might seem to irritate and even villainous at times, but it’s his presence that threads the whole story together, taking it in the sequence that it flows in. And Parthiepan’s touch is a show stealer.

Rajarathinam deserves to be lauded for his spectacular camera and angles, including the right hues for each scene, setting the mood right in every frame. For a movie as convincing as this, without a story and only a theme, it takes the right man on editing for the right impact of the screenplay; Sudharshan is bang on his job. Taking the cake is the apt usage of so many leading stars, instead of scattering them over the same song. Speaking of songs, the film has only two complete songs on screen, thus making for a hinder-free smooth yet gripping screenplay. The underlying theme that seems to have been stressed is that every minute is uncertain and nobody knows what the future holds for us. Be it your instincts or your intuition that you follow, the future is a box wrapped tightly, that you wait in anticipation to open. Driving this point home in one of the most captivating screenplays of recent times, with hardly any concrete story to stick to and an unbelievable climax, Parthiepan has ensured that ‘Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam’ is one of a kind of an entertainer that glues you to the seat all the two and half hours, without any worry of the clock ticking.

Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam Music Review

Cast:  Akhila Kishore, Sahithya Jagannathan, Azmathulla shariff, Amala Paul, Arya, Prakash Raj, Taapsee Pannu, Vijay Sethupathi, Vishal, Sivakarthikeyan
Director: R. Parthiepan
Production: K. Chandramohan
Music Director: Alphons Joseph, Sharreth, Vijay Antony, S.S Thaman
Lyricis: Madhan Karky, NA. Muthu Kumar

Parthiban. Ra, who known for his never ending experiments has come back with an intriguing title for his new film. Like the title, he chose to do a, Vasanth here. Who already roped 5 different composers for, Ai nee romba azhaga irukka. With this, KTVI, Parthiban aquired the serives of 4 individuals and honestly all of them have fulfilled the needs/moods of the situtations. The turst in one of the most creative director in our town gets restored once again.

1. Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam

Singer(s): Alphonse Joseph, Rita

The title track is highly imaginative with apt lyrics matches to the mood. Alphonse and Rita both passes their electric sense to the listener right from the tune starts. The violin part in the first interlude stands out. The pop-is base vocal from, Rita, is pretty dreamy. The drums, flutes, and age old classical stories from Tamizh culture as the central point lyrics is definitely a mighty influence from, Parthiban. It’s so good to see a title track extends for more than 7 mins and still does not fade out at any point.

2. Pen Megam Pola

Singer(s): G.V. Prakash, Saindhavi

The real life couple back again to render their sweet voice to one more duet from, Sharreth. G.V is a mighty singer who does not sing often. He nails this gorgeous melody with his butterscotch’s voice. The quality of orchestration deserves a huge applause. Saindhavi merges with the tune and takes the mantle from, G.V. A Carnatic fusion which brings a sudden change of climate with the instruments and vocals alone. A stand out composition which might remain in the top 20 bracket of this year.

3. A for Azhagu

Singer: Ramya NSK

The hero inside, Vijay Antony has eaten the brilliant composer within him. Well, to some extent, Vijay redeems himself with an experimental Arabic touch. Ramya tries to escalate the levels of song with her passionate singing. Barring the Middle Eastern touch which associates to the tune, nothing falls in place. It might grow once it is shown visually at the theatres/music channels.

4. Live the moment

Singer(s): Haricharan, Venkat Prabhu, Premgi Amaran, Shantanu, Nakul

In the recent past, no one has had the love for trumpets like, Thaman. He got a special aficionado to that instrument alone. The entire song sounds like a bit of rehash of, Thaman’s recent blockbuster works from his, Telugu tune. Nevertheless, the enthusiasm from the lead singers gets transferred to our ears pretty easily. An inspiring song which carries lot of verses to usurp something to lead. Like T20 kooda pazhasaagi pochu… T10 nu onna undakku… serves the purpose for this number.

5. Pen megam polvae

Singer(s): G.V. Prakash, Saindhavi

Like every music director, Sharreth wanted to have one more go with his wonderful tune by adding a mid paced drum beats revolving the main theme. G.V. owns this completely. He sounds exquisite and leaves ample space for the tune to revolve around him. The drums just act as an additional cherry to a delightful desert which was already served!
