Poojai Movie Review

Director: Hari
Cast: Vishal, Shruti Haasan, Satyaraj

Poojai is another Hari made formula movie with a larger than life hero, large supporting cast of family members, loyal servants and villains. The milieu is Coimbatore and follows the director’s regular template in filmmaking.

It has hero and his large family of mother, sister, Chittapa’s, Anni’s and other assorted people who live off the rich family. The villains are loud and boorish, and the heroine a mod girl falls for our hero’s machoism, the props are there to give the rich look to the film.

Vasu (Vishal), is a guy who due to some misunderstandings has come out of his rich joint family headed by his mother (Radhika Sarathkumar), and sets up a money lending business. D alias Divya (Shruthi Haasan) a modern girl falls for his good nature and sings a few songs with him in exotic foreign locations. A businessman and a contract killer, Anna Thandavam (Mukesh Tiwari), rubs Vasu the wrong way and bitter battle erupts.

There isn't one quiet moment in Poojai and all essential commercial elements are mixed in the narration. It means fights followed by comedy, emotion, glamorous songs, hero-heroine romance and back to long drawn out chases, action and eardrum-shattering background music.

Vishal is terrific as the one-man army and Shruthi Haasan looks glamorous especially in the song sequences. Mukesh Tiwary creates a fear as the rutless villain, while Soori as comedian shines along with a supporting cast of Satyaraj, Radhika Sarath, Prathap Pothen, Thalaivasal Vijay, Jayaprakash, Kousalya, Sitara, Pandi and Imman Annachi.

Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music is nothing to talk about. Priyan’s camera is stylish. The first half of the film is quite enjoyable, while the second half and climax feels long. There are some nice scenes, but the predictable story tires you out eventually. The fight scenes look repetitive and some of the comedy tracks featuring the trio-Soori, Pandi and Imman Annachi test your patience.

On the whole it is a typical Hari mass entertainer, though this time he has not got the mix in the right proposition.

Poojai Music Review

Cast:    Vishal, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, Raadhika Sarathkumar, Mukesh Tiwari, Jayaprakash, Soori, Thalaivasal Vijay, Abhinaya, Kausalya, Sithara, Renuka, Aishwarya
Direction:    Hari
Production:    Vishal
Music:    Yuvan Shankar Raja

There is nothing much left for Yuvan to prove, because he had delivered blockbusters after blockbusters in the past. It is about time that he must surpass his own records, and raise the bar to an all new level. ‘Anjaan’ was commercially classy, and ‘Raja Natwarlal’ earned him all the accolades to stabilize his position in B-town. Let’s see what he had offered for Hari’s ‘Poojai’ in detail.

1. Devathayai
Singer(s): Nivas

You don’t have to see the label to know this one is from Yuvan. A wonderful foot tapping melody which starts and end with beautiful whistle and guitar notes. Nivas continues his gorgeous form, and quite cleverly renders this track, albeit the base tune finds some resemblance to Yuvan’s work in ‘Samar’ (Azhago Azhagu). If Hari had put in some effort to picture this track in some picturesque place means, this number will easily become a crowd favorite.

2. Ippadiye
Singer(s): Rahul Nambiyar, Mili Nair

A neither impressive nor so bland one. Rahul Nambiyar and Mili tried their best to ignite some life to this pedestrian celebratory mood tune, but none of them actually works at the end. Once again, a track which falls right under the category of, could have been composed better.

3. Odi Odi
Singer(s): Palakkad Sriram

The album heads to another clichéd track and Palakkad Sriram gives everything to stir the goosebump’ish quotient, and he might succeed with the help of visuals. The interludes are energetic and might find a place as BGM in the movie, but as a song, this hasn’t served the purpose.

4. Soda Bottle
Singer(s): Yazin, Anthony Dassan, Sathyan

After hitting the bulwark in the past 2 songs, Yuvan strikes big with a massy number. Anthony Dassan and Yazin complements each other really well to deliver a groovy intro number for Vishal. Yuvan throws a small surprise at the end with his blazing guitars to finish the track on a high!

5. Uyire
Singer(s): Yuvan Shankar Raja

A short pathos driven by magnetic vocals from the composer himself. Finally, we get to hear the string sections in the interludes and the sound arrangements pulls off the desolate mood.

6. Verarum
Singer(s): Karthik, Pooja

Yuvan has saved the best for the last in this OST and he roped in the best in the industry to render it. Na. Muthukumar has penned the simplest of lyrics to a tune which is soaked in classical base. Pooja’s part is quite breezy, and she goes ahead of Karthik in terms of delivering the sweet poison.

Vishal's 'Poojai' Thanksgiving tour

Vishal’s Poojai which was released for Diwali is doing well at the box office all over Tamil Nadu. So  Vishal, Hari and Soori are on tour of various towns in Tamil Nadu to express their gratitude for the success of the movie.

Yesterday, they stopped at Guru Theater in Madurai during the noon show. Vishal thanked his fans and said he dedicated the success of Poojai to them.  He didn't want to thank them on TV from Chennai, but wanted to come in person to different cities and thank them.

He also said when his next movie Aambala releases for Pongal, he would do the same again. Actor Soori who is from Madurai also thanked the fans for the success of Poojai which he said was bigger than their earlier combination, Pandiya Naadu.

‘Poojai’s’ Reception Outside of Tamil Nadu

Director Hari rolled out his entertainer with Vishal and Shruthi Hassan in the lead, this Diwali. ‘Poojai’ is an action flick fairly well in the state. But the film is said to have had phenomenal responses outside the state. Vishal has released a few of his films dubbed into Telugu, parallel to his Tamil release. But ‘Pooja’, the Tollywood version of ‘Poojai’ is a phenomenal success, better than ever before. The film has been received very well in B and C class theatres in Andhra.

Owing to the victory of the film at box office, Vishal conducted a success meet for the film in Hyderabad. Speaking at the event, Vishal revealed that his father is an ardent fan of director Hari’s. “My father was very happy when I first joined hands with Hari in ‘Barani’. After almost 7 years, we have united again for ‘Poojai’ and the movie is very special to me. I have worked hard for the film, both as an actor as well as the producer” said Vishal.
