Nenjam Marappathillai Review

Star Cast : SJ Suryah, Regina Cassandra, Nandita Swetha
Director : Selvaraghavan

Nenjam Marappathillai is a comeback-of sorts film for Selvaraghavan, who is often celebrated, as one of the best directors in the Tamil film industry.

Ramsay aka Ramaswamy ( SJ Suryah) is a greedy industrialist who has climbed up the ladder through shortcuts in life. He behaves and projects himself as an obedient husband to Swetha (Nandita Swetha), who the reason behind his luxurious life. Ramsay is also a pervert who is lusting after his maid Mariam (a God-fearing Regina Cassandra who has refused to marry as she wants to serve Jesus and the needy).

Mariam is aware of Ramsay's move but she decides to stay on, for the sake of Rishi, the little kid of her employer. Now the cunning Ramsay sketches a plan and things turn ugly,  that Mariam loses her life. The second half is all about how Mariam takes revenge against Ramsay, the face of evil.

The story might sound as old as the hill but Selvaraghavan's stylish execution is the biggest highlight. The entire setup is the home ground for Selva and he hits the ball out of the park. SJ Suryah completely steals the show as the lecherous businessman with a deadly performance. His histrionics remind us of Sivaji Ganesan and Major Sundararajan, we could also witness traces of Selvaraghavan film heroes. Undeniably, Ramsay is one of the finest yet entertaining characters of SJ Suryah.

Regina as the God-fearing Mariam looks earnest, she has a well-written role. Nandita Swetha has dark shades to her role and she has good scope for performance in the second half.  The film has many theatrical moments. The choreography in Pondatti Ooruku Poita and Kannungla brings the roof down. Both the numbers are a kind of tribute for Janakaraj and Sivaji.

On the downside, the second half is predictable and the climax VFX portions fall short. We wish Selva works with a better CG team in the future. All his films fail in this department. Nenjam Marappathillai is also not a film for the weak-hearted and kids( not advisable).

Yuvan Shankar Raja has given his best in the film that the songs are outstanding and the background score enhances the overall mood of the film. The red and green color tone of Arvind Krishna is a visual treat. The climax also turns out to the battle between God and Satan, the tacky CG reminds us of the Kanchana series and Ramanarayanan's films.

To conclude, Nenjam Marappathillai is an engaging horror thriller that is not perfect.
