Demonte Colony

Demonte Colony: Audio review

Cast: Arulnithi
Music: Keba Jeremiah
Lyrics: Na.Muthukumar, Arunraja Kamaraj
Direction: Ajay Gnanamuthu

Vaada Vaa Machi
Singer: Anirudh
The song starts with Vijay’s famous dialogue from ‘Thirumalai’ and the peppy beats kick in after that. Anirudh delivers something that is closer to his style of rendition. The tune is foot tapping supplemented by the extensive nadaswaram layer in the background. Youngsters watchout!

Dummy Piece
Singer: D.Imman
“Dummy Piece” is Keba trying his hand with jazz. D.Imman lifts the tune with his chirpy singing. The lyrics do hamper the overall listening experience. The song has an old age charm to it which works to the tune’s favor.

Trap of the Beast
Singers: Ranina Reddy, Arunraja Kamaraj
“Trap of the Beast” is a rare metal rock track in Tamil music. The last attempt in this genre was made by Anirudh who did a metal version of “Po Nee Po” in ‘3’. Although Trap of the Beast gets the metal element right, the premise is short in terms of catchiness making this a passable track.

The Mystery Unfolds
Singer: Andrea
Here comes the album’s best track! “The Mystery Unfolds” is a spine chilling instrumental which is majorly boosted by Andrea’s humming. Likely to be played as the Title track, this number sets the tone of the film with all the spooky arrangements and gothic backgrounds.

The Curse of Demonte
Instrumental
“The Curse of Demonte” borrows heavily from the cult Bernard Hermann’s ‘Psycho’ theme music. The shrieking violins which turn on the creepiness of the visuals is all set to assist the movie.

On the whole, ‘Demonte Colony’ being a horror flick offers Keba a greater chance to explore on the rerecording and instrumentals rather than on conventional songs.

'Demonte Colony' will scare you:Ajay Gnanamuthu

Ajay Gnanamuthu, former assistant of AR Murugadoss is debuting as a director with Demonte Colony which is all set to  release tomorrow (May 22).  We had a quick chat with the director, excerpts…

Today horror films are ruling the box office. How different is Demonte Colony from the rest of horror films in Tamil cinema
Yes, most of them are horror-comedies but Demonte Colony will be a pucca horror thriller. Here we have given more importance to the thrilling elements that will scare the audience. I can’t divulge many things as it would be a spoiler but the second half of the film will be totally different; Hope the audience will lap it up

Why did you chose the abandoned area, Demonte Colony?
Usually filmmakers choose an imaginary area or some isolated locations for horror films. In the second half of the movie, we are trying to convey a thing which is the major crux of the story and it happened to be my first knot for the film. Later, I came to know about the abandoned place called Demonte Colony in Chennai which was interesting and the research has helped us a lot which has given a different color to the film

How did the opportunity come to you?
After finishing the script, I was looking for a hero who should be in his mid 20s and then we saw Arulnithi’s subtle yet powerful performance in Mounaguru. Through a common friend, I met Arulinthi and he immediately liked the idea.

How is Arulnithi’s performance in the film…
The film demands a powerful performance from him, especially the second half of the film should be carried by him alone and he has done a fabulous job . He is a very simple and down to earth actor, easy to work with.

Cinematography and music are the two important factors for any horror movie
Exactly and here our cinematographer Aravind had a lot of restriction with the locations but the way he conveyed emotions and thrill moments through his lighting is impressive.
Regarding Keba Jeremiah, I have listened to all his demos and most of them will have western quotient. As the film demands such westernized music, we have roped him as our music composer and we are extremely happy with the output.

About AR Murugadoss. Your guru…
AR Murugadoss is a university for me and whatever I’ve learnt about cinema is through him alone. He always gives full freedom to his assistant directors and the effort he puts in to make an engaging entertainer is definitely an inspiration to all of us.

Today, Murugadoss has tweeted that you are Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s favorite AD. What did he say after watching the film?
When I got the offer to direct Demonte Colony, I conveyed the message to him. Vijay sir wished me all the success and asked to give the best. Murugadoss sir loved the film

Demonte Colony Movie Review

Director: Ajay Gnanamuthu
Cast: Arulnithi,RJ Ramesh Thilak,MS Baskar

orror movies are the current flavour of the season in K-town but most of them are filled with loud background score, crass comedy, glamour, poor CG works and absolutely zero logic, which irritate the audiences.

Debutant director Ajay Gnanamuthu's Demonte Colony  does sincere attempt to scare us and seriously it is one of the well written, superbly executed horror thrillers in recent times that keep us engaged throughout its crisp running time of 116 minutes.

Srini (Arulnithi Tamilarasu), Vimal (RJ Ramesh), Raghavan and Sajid are good friends who are residing at a housing board colony at Pattinapakkam. Just like any other horror movie, here too all the four protagonists are intentionally checking out the well known abandoned bungalow in the city-Demonte Colony.

Soon we are enlightened about the history of Demonte, a wealthy Portuguese businessman who invites all the goldsmiths in the country to make a royal chain to his wife. But his wife becomes mentally ill and retarded and when Demonte realizes that someone in the mansion has made her pregnant, he goes on a killing spree. There is an eerie history that whoever visits the bungalow is murdered in a mysterious fashion.

During their visit, Raghavan gets the royal gold chain from the bungalow and now all the four friends get murdered one by one as their small housing board apartment is haunted by the dead Demonte himself. What happens next? Watch out in big screen

Arulinithi Tamilarasu has once again done a good job with his subtle act and the rest of the three protagonists too have done adequate performances, the guy who acted as Sajid is an interesting find. MS Baskar who comes in a brief role steals the show and the foreigner who played the Demonte is perfect for the role of depressed businessman.

Director Ajay Gnanamuthu takes his own time to establish all the four protagonists and their backdrop which tests our patience but once all of them enter into the haunted bungalow, the pace gets accelerated; especially the second of the movie is completely arresting and warrants our complete attention.

Cinematographer Aravinnd Singh has done a phenomenal job as he conveys all the thrill moments through his lighting and angles. The aerial shot showcasing the housing board colony and the vivid lighting used in the single room of the protagonists' house are absolutely brilliant. Debut music composer Kebra Jeremiah's background score is another major strength of the movie, his pulsating score elevates the film to a different level.

It is very much evident that Ajay comes from Murugadoss' school as he has perfectly done his research work to make an intelligent and intriguing horror thriller. Another appreciable thing about Ajay is that he has not compromised by adding love angle, songs or even a female lead.

To conclude, Demonte Colony is a must watch for audiences who want to see a quality horror film in this summer.

'Demonte Colony' is a runaway super hit

Arulnithi’s home production  Demonte Colony which released last Friday (May 22) is a big hit at the box office. The film has recovered the major part of the budget with its opening weekend collection of  Rs 3.47 crs from Tamil Nadu.

Trade sources say that the week day collections on Monday and Tuesday were as good as during the weekend. The way the film is running steadily , trade pundits are expecting it to be a super hit, which will turn profitable from theatricals alone.

Demonte Colony’s director Ajay Gnanamuthu says “I would like to thank media and youngsters in social networking sites who are sharing a lot of positive comments about the film. We thought that the film will be a hit but the reception we are getting now is overwhelming”.

Ajay Gnanamuthu also thanked Thenandal Films for their tremendous support and provided grand release and publicity for Demonte Colony. One of the major reasons for the film turning out to be a hit is Sri Thenandal Films Murali Ramanarayan’s aggressive marketing and strategy.

An upbeat Arlnithi said: "Owing to great word-of-mouth and several glowing reviews, Demonte Colony is a huge hit. I owe it all to the audiences"

Sources say that the film’s production cost is approximately around 3.5 crores and it will recover the cost and make around Rs 5 to 6 Crore from TN theatricals alone.

Vijay wishes 'Demonte Colony' director

Ilayathalapathy Vijay is one actor who is known for appreciating young talents and encourages them by wishing on their success.

Recently the actor invited Raghava Lawrence to his home and wished him on the huge success of Kanchana 2.

Now Vijay has wished Demonte Colony’s director Ajay Gnanamuthu and cinematographer Arvind Singh on the massive success of their debut film.

It is worth to mention when Vijay was shooting for Thuppakki, both Ajay Gnanamuthu and Arvind Singh were the assistant director and cinematographer to AR Murugadoss and Santhosh Sivan respectively.

Sources say that Vijay will be seeing Demonte Colony by next week but before that he heard about the success of the film at the box office and immediately wished the director and cinematographer.

AR Murugadoss lauds 'Demonte Colony'

Yesterday, actor Vijay and AR Murugadoss saw the recent super hit horror movie Demonte Colony directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu.

Ajay Gnanamuthu was a former assistant of Murugadoss and he also worked with Vijay in Thuppakki. Few days back, Vijay invited Ajay to his house and wished him on the huge success.

“Watched #DemonteColony semma thriller...Proud of you Ajay fantastic work by Arulnidhi, DOP Aravinnd singh, awesome BGM and sound effects” wrote AR Murugadoss on Twitter.

Reportedly Vijay too liked the film and lauded the entire unit for making an edge of the seat horror thriller.
