Music Review

Maari Thara Local
Singers: Dhanush,Anirudh
Instantly likeable! The album promised a ‘thara local’ genre and ‘Maari Thara Local’ picks up every bit of nuances when it comes to local arrangements. Rendered in a highly easy to sing along fashion, this song is a mighty follow up to Dhanush’s previous ‘Dangamaari’. The main ‘Maari’ hook of the song is the brightest portion of the track. Cracking tune!

Oru Vidha Aasai
Singers: Vineeth Sreenivasan
‘Oru Vidha Aasai’ has a jazzy flavor with lyrics depicting the scenario of a tough guy falling for a girl and turning soft. The funky additions in the tune & the chorus during the interludes help to sustain the whacky tune. Montague Material!

The Maari Swag
Instrumental
The Maari Swag is already familiar to the listeners thanks to the teaser. This is a very short track that runs for less than a minute and is expected to be used heavily in the re recording for ‘mass’ scenes. To sum it up, this is the instrumental version of the hook line of ‘Maari

'Thara Local’.
Bagulu Odayum
Singers: Dhanush
Yet another short track that tries to do pretty much what the album set out to do. Could be the weakest track of the album!. Musically, nothing except thappu & a cello finds a place in this track.

Thappa Dhaan Therium
Singers: Dhanush,Chinna Ponnu,Maghizini
‘Thappa Dhaan Therium’ – although accounting for one too many tracks in the ‘local’ genre is still made viable thanks to addictive rendition by Dhanush. There is a streak of ‘What A Karvaad’ in this track especially during the charanam portions. The nadaswaram portions make the track kinda clichéd. Might impress with repeated listening!

Don’u Don’u
Singers: Anirudh,Alisha Thomas
With most songs in the album finding a place in the same genre, Anirudh dabbles his hand with a RnB style track in Don’u Don’u. Although the tune has lots of Anirudh’s usual traces, the very idea of having local lyrics for a RnB makes this one to stand out. Works almost instantly!

Although the album sticks to the genre it promised, the tunes coupled with jarring arrangements make this album sound monotonous. Tracks like ‘Maari Thara Local’ & ‘Donu Donu’ work like typical Anirudh tracks but the catchiness is missing in the remaining tracks. One hopes that the album grows among listeners with repeated listening. Would probably go down as Anirudh’s weakest album till date.

Picks of the album: Maari Thara Local,The Maari Swag,Don’u Don’u
Album Verdict: Anirudh delivers a middling album that needs time to grow!

"Maari' Review

Director: Balaji Mohan
Cast: Dhanush, Vijay Yesudas, Kajal Aggarwal, Robo Shanka

Dhanush’s Maari follows the tried and tested template of the age-old mass commercial movies of Tamil cinema. Director Balaji Mohan has perfectly glorified the protagonist with punch dialogues, slow-motion shots and an adrenaline pumping background score by Anirudh.  It is a film that makes no bones, no pretenses about the fact that it is packaged for B & C audiences.

Maari (Dhanush) is a local don. According to popular hearsay-eight years back, Maari had murdered another powerful goon in that area after which he took over as local dada. When Arjun (Vijay Yesudas), a cunning cop gets transferred to the area, he tries to collect enough proof to put Maari behind the bars with the help of Sridevi (Kajal) who has her own reasons to hate the don.

Now, Maari the goon with a large heart returns from jail, only to realise that his area is now under the control of Arjun and the rest of the film is a predictable mayhem. Maari’s biggest strength is undoubtedly Dhanush’s impetuous performance and terrific screen presence. He is slowly but surely turning out to be a complete entertainment package – the actor single handedly carries the film with his swag mannerisms and effortless dialogue delivery.

After Dhanush, it is Robo Shankar who steals the show with his unique one-liners and body language. Whenever the screenplay slows down, Robo Shankar lightens up the mood of the audience with his uncanny humor-easily Maari is his career best performance.

Kajal Aggarwal sleepwalks in a badly written role. She hardly emotes and may be someone should tell her that it is time to put some effort to act. Vijay Yesudas looks menacing but the weak characterisation lets him down.

Though Anirudh’s songs are mass numbers, the background elevates the film to a different level which is apparently another hero of the film. Cinematography by Om Prakash is stylish and his frames captures local Chennai in vivid colour tones.

On the downside, this exaggerated and formulaic, old-fashioned entertainer plays to the galleries, and relies squarely on the charm of its leading man to pull off its over-the-top tone. The film is a showcase not so much for Dhanush’s acting, but for his scorching screen-presence and his infectious enthusiasm for dialogue delivery.

On the whole, Maari is sure to appeal to die-hard Dhanush fans. For others though, it’s strictly average entertainment.

Dhanush on a roll, 'Maari' takes a super opening

Dhanush is on a roll. His Maari released on Friday, July 17 the big Ramadan festival weekend and has taken an extraordinary opening.  The film, according to sources close to the producers  has netted a gross collection of 6 .5 crores from Tamil Nadu theatres on day one.

This figure is the gross total of Chennai city, Chengalpet, North and south Arcot, Salem, Coimbatore. Trichy, Madurai and Tirunelveli(TK). In fact, Sarathkumar one of the produces tweeted: "Maari "stupendous and biggest opening in recent times and revenue surpasses all time records too, audience, distributors celebrate”

In fact Maari is Dhanush’s third hat trick. He had Thulluvadho Ilamai, Kaadhal Kondein and Thiruda Thirudi in 2003, followed by Polladhavan, Thiruvilaiyaadal Aarambam and Yaaradi Nee Mohini and  in 2008. And 2014-15 Velaiyilla Pattathari, Anegan and now Maari , the actors third hat trick in his career.

Maari proves that Dhanush has an opening and is a Minimum Guarantee star , especially among youth audiences. Though the film carries mixed reviews and word-of-mouth, collections are steady.
