'Papanasam' Audio review

Cast: Kamal Hassan,Gauthami,MS Bhaskar,Delhi Ganesh,Asha Sarath
Music: Ghibran
Lyrics: Na.Muthukumar
Direction: Na.Muthukumar

Yeya En Kottikaara
Singers: Sundar Narayana Rao, Malavika Anilkumar
Lovely composition! ‘Yeya En Kottikaara’ brings us back the Ghibran of ‘Vaagai Sooda Vaa’ days. Malavika does a great job in the rendition while Ghibran’s regular Sundar Narayana Rao oozes fresh air to the tune. Imagining how the montages are going to be involving Kamal for this track adds an icing to the cake. Album’s best!

Vinaa Vinaa
Singers: Hariharan
Seeing Hariharan’s name in the audio listing is a delight. ‘Vina Vina’ is a lyric driven number that has more appeal when heard with the context of the movie. The interludes and the charanam portions are instantly likeable whereas the texture of the entire track is maintained in an introspective mood. Highly situational!

The album rakes up plenty of OST’s. The Papanasam Theme seems to be coming out of Uthama Villain’s jukebox. The Bond of Family reflects ‘Yeya En Kottikaara’ through its mild instrumentation. Kill for Life & A Sinking Car add a sense of creepiness with their dark treatment that involves a gothic arrangement. The Police Investigation is a drawn out symphony piece that is sure to add value when watched with the visuals. This is Me stands out as the best of the lot with chorus portions leading the way to a highly nuanced treatment.

Through ‘Papanasam’, Ghibran maintains the musical high he reached through Utthama Villain & this album has been made in such a way to compliment the plot of the movie. ‘Yeya En Kottikaara’ stands out among the songs and is sure to be most played in several music channels.

Picks from the album: Yeya En Kottikaara, This is Me, A Sinking Car
Album Verdict: Ghibran delivers a visually supportive album!

Papanasam Review

Director: Jeethu Joseph
Cast: Kamal Haasan, Gautami, Niveda Thomas, Baby Esther

First things First! Remaking a well received, cult classic movie like Drishyam into another language is definitely not a cake walk.

And when you are going to replace an exceptional actor like Mohanlal with an equally talented Kamal Haasan there must have been huge pressure on Jeethu Joseph, the director of the both the films.

Thankfully, Papanasam –the Tamil version is even tighter and there is absolutely no room for error in the writing. Flawless is the word!

Suyambulingam (Kamal Haasan) is a local cable TV operator living happily with his family comprises of wife Rani(Gautami), daughters—Selvi (Niveda Thomas) and Meena (Baby Esther). When an uninvited guest enters into their family to cause heavy havoc, they stand together and send him to a place where he can never comeback.

But the irony is that they actually messed up with the son of a powerful and sharp IG Geetha Prabhakar (Asha Sarath) who does her best to bring the truth out from them. Does she succeed? Watch out the film.

Drishyam was perhaps one of the tightest scripts in Indian cinema but Papansam is also impeccable and it is note worthy that Jeethu Joseph has corrected all those unidentifiable minor logic loopholes in the remake which indeed gives a fresh feel to the audience who have already seen the original.

Another interesting aspect of Papanasam is the nativity—writers Jeya Mohan and Suka have penned the dialogues in such a way that the film gives us a feel of being there in Papanasam for three hours.

All the actors have delivered the nellai slang with sheer perfection, they have also followed the mannerisms and body language of the people lives in the particular locality which deserves a huge applause!

Performance wise, Kamal Haasan is amazing and he has not followed the acting style of Mohanlal, so there is no way that we compare both the actors. The way Kamal speaks the nellai Tamil is a treat to watch, needless to say, his emotional outburst in the climax would even move a stone heart! But the question to be asked is being a perfectionist, why Kamal has opted for the fake mustache? Which is sadly the one and only distraction in the whole movie.

Gautami has once again proved her acting prowess while Asha Sharath has brilliantly reproduced her powerful performance from the original. The rest of the actors including Niveda Thomas, Baby Esther, Kalabavan Mani, MS Baskar and Anant Mahadevan who have also excelled in their performances.

Technically, Ghibran's background score is a big asset to the movie which brings the audience to the edge of the seat while cinematography by Sujith is brilliant.

Overall, Papanasam is a faithful remake of Drishyam with an authentic local flavor and more detailing from the original!

Why Rajini turned down 'Papanasam'?

Superstar Rajinikanth was the first choice of director Jeethu Joseph for the Tamil remake of Drishyam. In fact, both have met and discussed about the possibility of remaking the film but they were apprehensive whether Rajini fans will accept him in such a non-heroic role.

In a media interaction, Jeethu Joseph said “ Rajini sir was highly impressed with Drishyam and as he has an extraordinary yet unique body language like Mohanlal. The movie would have  obviously given him a different dimension. But both of us were apprehensive for two reasons—one is the scene where Rajini gets beaten up by a constable and also the climax”.

“I told him that I have my own doubts whether his fans will accept such scenes and Rajini too agreed to it” said Jeethu Joseph.

Jeethu Joseph is confident of directing Rajinikanth in near future. Mean while, Papanasam, the Tamil remake of Drishyam staring Kamal Haasan is getting fabulous reviews.

Kamal Haasan's 'Papanasam' - Reactions

Kamal Haasan's Papanasam has been getting rave reviews. The film, which is a remake of the Malayalam thriller Drishyam, has been described as an adaptation that lives up to the brilliance of the original.

Here's what our review of Papanasam says: "Remaking a well received, cult classic movie like Drishyam into another language is definitely not a cake walk.

No tax exemption for 'Papanasam'! Major blow for the makers!

Kamal Haasan’s Papanasam is getting positive response from media and audiences but Tamil Nadu government has rejected tax exemption for the film.

Normally a Tamil film with a Tamil title and ‘U’ certificate is eligible for the tax exemption. Other than these two factors, there is a committee appointed by Tamil Nadu government which evaluates whether a particular film follows Tamil culture, dialogues, tradition and not setting bad example for the society.

According to the committee, Papanasam has projected cops in bad light and there is a scene where a student takes an obscene video of a young girl and blackmails her, which apparently sets a bad precedence to the society; hence they have rejected tax exemption for the film.

These days big budget Tamil films are highly affected because of the huge 30% entertainment tax and if they fail to fetch exemption, the producer hardly gets back his investment!

But there is also a rumour is that Papanasam did not get tax exemption because SUN TV is holding the satellite rights of the film!

Thanksgiving by 'Papanasam' team was unique

The thanks giving or success meet of Kamal Haasan’s Papanasam happened yesterday (July 8) at Chennai.

The function was very unique as the organizers have constructed authentic sets including a tea shop, Rani Illam (Kamal’s house in the film) and police station.  The actors in the film were introduced as the characters they portrayed in the film.

Speaking at the function Kamal said “I heard from my close associates that Mohanlal who played the lead in the original version of Papanasam (Drishyam) had recommended me for the Tamil remake and I should thank him for his magnanimity “.

When asked who has given better performance, Meena in the original or Gautami in Papanasam? On a lighter note, Kamal said “At least I could convince Gautami as I’m seeing her daily but it would be a grueling task to compromise Meena . Further, why to miss the chance to act with her again?”

Kamal also asked the media to continue supporting good films like Papanasam and carefully rephrased the success meet as thanksgiving meet.
