Kaaval is a pucca mass masala entertainer with action, comedy, romance, sentiments and other elements associated with big-hero films. But it manages to entertain only at few places and most of the time; the cliched execution dilutes the intensity.
Chandrasekar (Samuthirakani) is an honest police officer and he is given an opportunity to encounter the deadliest don who is responsible for all the murders that are happening in Tamil Nadu. But during the mission, Chandrasekar looses one of his most intelligent encounter specialists Alwin Sudan and later he realizes that their carefully planned operation was leaked to the rivals by a guy (Vemal) son of a corrupt constable (MS Baskar). Now Chandrasekar sketches a plan to encounter the don through Vemal, does he succeed in it? Watch out the film on the big screen to know…
Kaaval majorly works because of Samuthirakani’s amazing performance as an honest cop and for the racy cuts of Praveen KL. The director has portrayed the encounter scenes with enough tense moments and authenticity which is laudable. But once the encounter portion gets over, the film's shoddy execution dilutes the intensity and gains back its momentum only in the climax.
Performance wise, it is an out and out Samuthirakani show and he steals it in style. Vemal has tried to mouth some Chennai dialogues but he looks alien for the character while MS Baskar has once again given his matured performance. Producer 'Punnagai Poo' Geetha looks too old to play Vemal's love interest and her sequences in the film are a big torture that we wonder if she made this film only to be the heroine!
Technically, GV Prakash Kumar's songs are good and background score elevates the film, especially during the encounter portions. Praveen KL's jump cuts have certainly helped the movie to have a fast pace and the running time might act as an advantage.
Overall, director Nagendran has tried to convey a message oriented cop movie in a template that is so familiar to Tamil audiences, which ultimately fails to impress.
