Sulthan Review

Star Cast : Karthi, Rashmika, Lal
Director : Bakkiyaraj Kannan

Director Bakkiyaraj Kannan's Sulthan is an engaging mass masala action entertainer,  though the presentation is inspired by a lot of Tamil and Telugu films (Thevar Magan, Mirchi, Srimanthudu, Baahubali), Seven Samurai, and the Hindu Epic Mahabharata.

Vikram aka Sulthan (Karthi) is the prince of the most ruthless gangster clan in Chennai. Sulthan's dad Sethupathi (Napolean) promises the village representatives that he would save them from a gangster named Jayaseelan (KGF Ram) who destroys the agricultural lands and beats up the farmers.

However, in a brutal encounter Sethupathi gets wounded and the next day, Sulthan wakes up to know that his dad is no more. The new Commissioner of Police (Hareesh Peradi) tells Sulthan that he wants to clean up the city and hence, will be knocking off all the goondas.

Sulthan asks the commissioner to give him one chance and promises that his gang members will not take up violence. Now, Sulthan and his hundred rowdy brothers are in the village to help the farmers. Can Sulthan fulfill his dad's promise? Will the rowdy brothers listen to his words? Watch the film to know more...

The film's USP is the action sequences which are choreographed analogous to the contemporary battle sequences. The bond between Karthi and his rogue brothers is another biggest highlight of the film. Karthi looks convincing as the classy robotic engineer who hates violence. Situations push him to take up the violence and he rises as the new leader.

Rashmika Mandanna is cute and she does justice to her character. Lal is the film's Kattappa and he has done his part well. While the rowdy boys Arjai, Yogi Babu, Sendrayan, and others are superb casting choices.

The first half of the film is quite engaging but with the arrival of a corporate villain, the film becomes slow.  He looks more like a caricature and is a major letdown.  The powerful climax compensates for all the flaws. Technically, Yuvan Shankar Raja's goosebumps-inducing background score enhances the action sequences while the songs of the Vivek-Mervin duo are enjoyable.

Sathyan Sooryan's cinematography and the action sequences are other major highlights of the film. To conclude, Sulthan is predictable but Bakkiyaraj's execution makes it a watchable commercial entertainer.
