'36 Vayadhinile' audio review

Cast: Jyothika,Rahman,Abirami,Sanjay Bharathi
Lyrics: Vivek
Music: Santhosh Narayanan
Direction: Rosshan Andrews

’36 Vayadhinile’, the remake of the Malayalam hit ‘How Old Are You’ is the much awaited comeback vehicle for Jothika and has music by Santhosh Narayanan who is fresh after having a phenomenal year with back to back success in albums like ‘Madras’,’Jigarthanda’,’Cuckoo’,’Enakkul Oruvan’. Let us see how this album has turned out:

Happy – Naalu Kazhudha
Singer: Santosh Narayanan
Despite sounding extremely similar to his previous arrangements(Enakkul Oruvan), Santhosh Narayanan wields the microphone and does the rendition for ‘Happy’ himself. The lyrics are ample fun and Santhosh’s vocals give them a new flavor. There is an accompanying keys line throughout the song and the tune itself is mighty simple and highly likeable.

Pogiren
Singer: Kalpana Raghavendar
‘Pogiren’ is an uplifting tune believed to inspire the lead character in the movie. Kalpana’s vocals which is similar to Nithyasree’s fits the tune aptly. The lyrics are a huge plus to the track where the composer has toned down the funkiness that is prevalent in the album. There is an accompanying violin-string section along with the visuals which makes up the interludes. Highly inspirational!

Rasathi
Singer: Lalitha Vijayakumar
As soon as we start listening to this number, we realize this track is definitely a wacky, entertaining & a funny one with good lyrics. Add quirky arrangements and refreshing sound quality owing to the mix. Lalitha Vijayakumar gives the track an added flavor and the lyrics are ample fun. The usage of peculiar vocals is getting too template in a Santhosh Narayanan album these days. The song has an underlying piano shift along with a cello-trumpet layer which takes care of the interludes. A terrific track to start the album though!

The album also has a bunch of background scores that come along with the audio CD. ‘Vidiyal Thedi’, which is the pick of the lot has the essence of Pogiren track in its tune and can be seen in the teaser of the movie. The ‘President’ track starts off with blow horns and trumpets and has a lighter vein compared to the rest of the background scores. ‘Kannadi’ has terrific key work followed by the violins to amplify the mood of the track. ‘Kaneer Mozhi’ & ‘Kanavugal Sumandhu’ fill up the remaining of the album with their string oriented arrangements that are bound to work well with the movie.

On the whole, Santhosh Narayanan delivers another terrific album adding to the list of his impressive filmography. Although he gets carried away and tries to be too funky with the choice of his singers in his recent albums, his tunes are fresh. ’36 Vayadhinile’ has a good collection of some catchy songs & soothing background score which is a great attribute to the movie.

36 Vayadhinile Movie Review

Remaking a hit movie is like treading on a tight rope.

You have to repeat scenes which were well received in the original and do necessary changes to suit the nativity of the target audience. But when you have the supremely talented actress like Jyothika on board, she becomes the center of attraction and her presence will assure the desired result!

Who puts the expiry date on a woman's dream? This is one of the pertinent questions that 36 Vayadhinile asks. A warm welcome to Jyothika as she lives the role of a house wife, Vasanthi who sacrifices her dream for her husband Tamizh Selvan (Rahman) and 13-year-old daughter Mithila(Amirtha). The family is planning to migrate to Ireland but as Jyothika is over aged (36), she is denied visa and work permit.

Trouble starts for her when she gets an opportunity to meet the President of India where she ruins it by falling unconscious and becomes the butt of ridicule on Facebook. Her friends at work, family including daughter feels embarrassed about the whole mishap. Vasanthi finds herself in a vacuum when her husband and daughter do not need her anymore and decides to leave her and go to Ireland.

The rest of the film is about how Vasanti, inspired by her friend Susan David (Abhirami), decides to chase her dream in a fairy tale manner. Even if you have seen the original Malayalam version How Old Are You, you will still end up loving 36 Vayadhinile mainly because of two reasons - for the infectious energy of Jyothika who single handedly carries the film with her cute expressions. The actress also shines in the emotional sequences. The second reason is for the effortless dialogues of Viji which are filled with great sense of humor and hard hitting reality of women in our society. Rosshan Andrrews deserves a pat on his back for being faithful to his original and bringing back Jyothika back on screen.

Rahman has a small role and all the supporting cast is good. But Abhirami's Susan character is not convincing as Kaniha's role in How Old Are You. On the downside there is a docu-feel especially in the second half when Vasanthi's dream and success in life is rushed. Santhosh Narayanan's Vaadi Raasathi and Pogiren numbers add the feel good factor to the film and his background score effortlessly conveys the emotion.

Overall, 36 Vayadhinile is a better film than the most of the so called commercial movies and it is must watch for the family audiences who seek quality entertainment. There are some positive messages that the film conveys, which also need to be appreciated. Go for this one!

Sixteen no more: Jyothika's inspirational comeback in '36 Vayathiniley'

'Will she act in movies after marriage?' is still the first question that pops into our heads when an actress announces her wedding. Despite the Kareena Kapoors and Aishwarya Rais and Amala Pauls of Indian cinema who haven't let shaadi come in the way of their stardom, we still believe that marriage is the full-stop to a woman's career, especially when she's in a visual and highly public medium like cinema.

I remember watching a news clipping of the heartbreakingly young Nazriya right after her engagement to Fahadh had been announced to the press. One of the first questions she was asked was if she was quitting films. A visibly taken aback Nazriya mumbled something about how she didn't think Fahadh would have a problem if she continued to act. Nobody, of course, posed a similar question to Fahadh.

Yes, it's a terribly unequal world. And that's why it's so satisfying to see two women who quit films at a time when they were ruling the industry make a come-back with a script that asks the question: Who decides the expiry date of a woman's dreams? The Malayalam original How Old Are You? and its Tamil remake 36 Vayathiniley are both worthy additions to the slowly but surely growing canon of women-centric Indian films.

Personally, I thought How Old Are You? was a much better film than 36 Vayathiniley. Though the Tamil film is an almost frame by frame remake of the original, parts of it are disjointed and a tad too simplistic. And while the husband in How Old Are You? is oblivious to his insensitivity in a way that many men in real life are, the dude in 36 Vayathiniley is positively evil and abusive. Makes it hard for the viewer to stomach the spirited Vasanthi's reconciliation with him in the end. I'd also rate Manju's performance higher than Jo's though the latter has given everything she's got to the film.

That said, it's heartening to see that 36 Vayathiniley has gone on to become a huge hit. Remember, we're still at a time when movie critics and audiences alike are criticizing the 30 plus Anushka Shetty for looking too 'mature' in Lingaa. In which she stars opposite a 60 plus Rajinikanth. We're still at a time when normally sensible actors like Kalki Koechlin are entreating women to buy a bottle of Olay so they can go back to the skin they were born with. And here comes a film where the number 36 denotes the heroine's age and not her bust size and the audience has lapped it up nevertheless!

There are no computer-enhanced stunt sequences, no sexist comedy tracks with nauseating bromance, spicy item numbers that second standard kids will sing with full josh on reality TV. Oh wait, there is a shot of the heroine running a race. Aha. If you've watched Tamil films for long enough, you know what that shot is going to be all about. You know where the camera will be focused and you know how many views it's going to get on Youtube subsequently. But wait, people in the theatre are actually clapping? People are feeling inspired! There's a heroine running onscreen and people are rooting for her because she's kicking ass at that moment. Whoa. Well done, Jo. You make me believe that acche din is here for Tamil films at last.
