Top 10 Historical Cities In England

In England, there are endless historical places for you to visit if you want to step back in time. As England is such a historical, ancient country, there are many cities for you to visit. All of them are lovely and each possesses its own individual beauty. If you live in England or if you wish to visit England, you must see its historical cities. They are all amazing and each has a very long history. If you love history, you will certainly enjoy England because it boasts endless historical cities. Here are the top ten cities that boast the most and the best history out there. Just remember to bring your camera with you. Do not forget it as there are so many sights for you to capture with your camera. England has long been known to be a historical country with lots to see and admire. As long as you bring along a camera, you don't really have to take much else.



1. Bath



This spa city is stunning and packed full of history and culture. Travelers from all over the world come to Bath to see its beauty and history. It's actually a roman city. It is one of the oldest tourist destinations in England. Visitors have been coming to Bath for centuries. There are endless landmarks for you to see of historical significance such as the Roman Baths, which are one of the most popular sights to see in the whole of Bath. Built about 2,000 years ago, these baths have long been a tourist attraction. Other historical landmarks to see include Bath Abbey, Pulteney Bridge and Weir, and the Royal Crescent. These are all worth seeing if you come to the brilliant town of Bath.

2. Oxford



Oxford is actually the oldest university city in the U.K. One of its most notable landmarks, the University of Oxford, was founded in the 12th century. The buildings in Oxford are full of character and this is most likely because they are so ancient. There are a number of other landmarks for you to admire that are historical such as the Bodleian Library, which opened in 1602, Radcliffe Camera, Hertford Bridge, University Church of St Mary the Virgin and many more. There are also many colleges that are historical and date back to 13th century. Oxford is definitely one of the most well-known historical cities in England and tourists from all over the globe come to see it.

3. Windsor



The ancient city of Windsor is mainly known for its castle which began being built in 1075. This castle is the largest castle in the world and also the oldest occupied. Therefore, one of the landmarks you want to see first is the Windsor Castle. It really is amazing to see. You can even picture yourself there centuries ago. The grounds are so beautiful and well maintained. Also whilst you are at the castle, you should take some time to see the change of guard. Other landmarks include Guildhall, Windsor Parish Church, Eton College, and Brocas Meadows. Windsor is not just historical, it is beautiful too with lots of lovely scenery and nice buildings. It's a great place to walk around.

4. Salisbury And Stonehenge
 


Salisbury is mainly known for its cathedral and certainly holds a lot of history as does Stonehenge. If you are searching for history in England, you will definitely find it here. Salisbury and Stonehenge are full of history and are beautiful too. This is a must-see place indeed. You can have a guided tour through Salisbury and Stonehenge where you can see all the spectacular historical sites. There are so many to see so you want to make sure you cover them all. They are also both beautiful areas so you will certainly enjoy yourself here and see the wonderful sights among beautiful landscapes.

5. Chester



This is a historical city that is located on the River Dee. It is also the town that is the gateway to North Wales. It's definitely worth coming to this city to see the sights and you can travel to North Wales from here too which might be convenient to you if you like travelling to new places. Come to see the historical roman walls and take a walk around them to admire them. Other landmarks to see whilst you are in Chester are the amphitheatre, Roman Gardens, the Cathedral and Grosvenor Park. These are all great places to see and you must come and see them all if you want to see the full history of Chester.

York is a historical cathedral city with a history dating back to roman times. It is a frequently visited city mainly because it has so much history to offer visitors so you won't be short of sights to see. York is quite a small city but it still has so much to offer tourists even so. There is so much for you to see that will satisfy your curiosity such as the York Minster, King's Manor, York Dungeon, York Maze, and many more. On foot, you can explore the city walls, look at the Snickleways, hire a boat, or visit a theatre. There is plenty for you to do. If you really want to step back in time and see the history of York, take a guided tour and you will be shown all the ancient places.

7. Cambridge



Everybody has heard of Cambridge. There are very few that haven't. It is a well-known university city in Cambridgeshire. Until you come and see it for yourself, you wouldn't fully appreciate the beauty of Cambridge. It is a lovely city full of old buildings that are famous. Through the years, endless scientists and writers have studied in this city. You can really understand why they felt so inspired when living here. King's College Chapel is, of course, the most notable historic landmark. From there you can see the River Cam. The gothic architecture of Cambridge is amazing. When you come here, it will be the colleges that you will want to see as these are the most historic. There are also some beautiful parks and gardens for you to take a look at.

9. Stratford-Upon-Avon

10. Canterbury



Canterbury is both a university city and a cathedral city located in Kent. It is the main tourist centre in Kent and attracts a huge number of tourists on a regular basis. It was bombed a number of times during the second world war but it still contains endless historical buildings and is still a beautiful city. It is now known as a medieval town and few would be disappointed with what they see here. There is such a range of architectural designs here in Canterbury which is what makes the buildings so unique. When you are here, take time to visit the Canterbury Cathedral, Canterbury Castle, St Martin's Church and St Augustine's Church. These all contain historical value that is incredibly interesting.


England boasts a number of great cities, but if you are looking for cities with a wealth of history, these are the top ten places to come to. In any one these cities you will find beauty and history and the combination of the two is fantastic. You can really feel like you are stepping back in time with all of these cities. Some of the landmarks you will see are fantastic sights and they are full of character. You will probably already have heard of these but they are all very good and offer lots of history and interesting sights.
