Top 10 Most Beautiful Italian Beaches You Should Stop By

If you are heading to Italy and want to know where the best beaches are to relax and soak up some of that famous Mediterranean sun then we have looked into the ten best beaches in the country for you and your friends and family to enjoy. Whether you are after a drive away from a city or one of the best kept secrets that only the locals know about, there is a beach here for you.

1. Taormina, Sicily

When it comes to pristine pieces of paradise you won’t find many places in the rest of Europe, never mind Italy that come close to this secreted little town in the Province of Messina. The present town occupies an ancient site, so in between beach breaks there is plenty to keep you occupied, but the main point of interest is the bay. The village is perched on the cliffs over the Ionian Sea, the same cliffs which embrace the beach itself and keep all elements except the sun away from you. No wind will disturb you as you look out over the crystal clear water and although it has been a tourist spot for several hundred years it still isn’t well known enough to put it on the tourist trail for for hundreds of families ensuring piece and quiet.

2. Salina, Sicily

Salina is one of the Aeolian Islands and is another one of those quiet beaches where you can relax and enjoy some alone time without the fear of being disturbed. The island itself has just 4,000 residents, so if you are looking for a chance to get away from it all without having to fly halfway around the world then look no further. It is included as a World Heritage Site because of the volcanoes on the island, but you don’t need to worry because there hasn’t been an eruption here for 13,000 years. In fact, the only influence that the volcano has had on the island is to create a series of cliffswhich dive down into the water.

3. Viareggio, Tuscany

Tuscany is of course famous for its rolling countryside, but but thre are plenty rolling beaches here as well, and none is better than the beach at Viareggio. The city is a seaside resort and is home to a carnival once a year in late March. There is sun here all year round, with minimal rainfall and gentle humidity. That said the heat is manageable, with the average high being about 20 degrees, so it is an ideal place to take the kids and for those with sensitive skin. The town is built on the tourist trade so if you are looking for somewhere nice and quiet for a romantic getaway then maybe this isn't for you, but if you are after a bit of family fun in the sun with everything you need close to hand then you needn’t look any further.

4. Samson Beach, Tuscany

On the small island of Elba off the coastal town of Piombino this is one of those rare spots of total beauty and splendid isolation. Although it is the largest island in the archipelago it isn’t exactly Australia, although the weather in the summer might make you think that it is. The average temperature in June and July is in the mid to high twenties, so if you want a pure beach holiday and really want to top up your tan then you can get everything you need here. There is plenty of luxury here though, after all Napoleon stayed on this island so there are plenty of reasons to come and see this picturesque little corner for yourself.

5. Termoli Beach, Molise

If you are operating on a budget or want to go all inclusive then look at this endless stretch of coastline at Molise. The agricultural town has changed a lot in recent years, becoming a real tourist trap. There are plenty of brilliant restaurants to supplement your all inclusive stay and as a tourist town there are few places that are better equipped to deal with a young family. Although it has become a popular tourist destination in recent years, it is still nothing like as intense as some of the Italian Islands, so you can still enjoy a bit of privacy and quiet on a budget at a family resort.

6. Vignanotica Beach, Apulia

‘Breathtaking’ is a word we try and avoid here, but when you put everything that Vignanotica Beach in Apulia has to offer it is difficult to come up with anything else. The combination of clean sands and towering white cliffs, coupled with the unparalleled sun bathing and swimming in the area is not to be missed out on. It is only a short bus ride from the nearby town if you need a break from the sun the cliffs will provide a shaded spot throughout the day. There are plenty of attractions nearby and most of them are easily within walking range. This beach offers not only the best coastal experience it also has everything you need less than a stone’s throw away.

7. Costa Smerelda, Sicily

The name of this beach literally translates as the Emerald Coast and boasts a beach which is over a mile long. This is a an exclusive sort of place, so if you are after somewhere a little bit more special then Costa Smerelda will be just what you are looking for. Golf clubs, private jets, helicopters and of course the pristine white sands mean that there are plenty of celebrities who choose this part of the world to relax and get away from it all. The privacy is what you pay for here, and with all those miles of beach to explore there will always be plenty of spaces that you can call your own no matter when you visit, even in peak season.

8. La Pelosa Beach, Sardinia

In many ways this beach looks like it belongs more in the Caribbean than the Mediterranean. There is something about the blue of the water here that makes it impossible to believe that you are still in Europe. The sand shelves gently into the sea so there are no sudden drops which might put you off if you were looking for somewhere to take young kids or early swimmers. There are no worries here, and although it can get a little busy in August there is sun here pretty much all year round so if you are looking for the perfect place to take the little ones outside peak season then this is the beach for you.

9. Modello Beach, Sicily

In many ways this is the archetypal Italian coastal town. There is a pristine beach with beautiful white sands and the town stretches right down to it, ensuring a busy and vibrant feel. Everything you need is right on your doorstep, so this is another one to pencil in for the family holiday album. DJs play music in the background and there is a friendly atmosphere here. It’s only 30 minutes away from Palermo so if you are planning a city break but want a little bit of beach time then this popular little spot for the locals can be one that you really make your own. Even if you have come for the beach though, bring your appetite because the seafood is fresh and abundant, although to be honest even if you aren’t a fan of seafood the beach is more than worth it on its own.

10. Carla Mariolu Beach, Sicily

If you like to have something to look at while you dip your toes in the bright blue ocean and feel the sun on skin then the Carla Mariolu Beach has everything you are after. Turquoise waters and a great spot for a boat trip, many people have called this their favourite beach of all time. There are a few rocky outcrops to climb up on and enjoy some spectacular views, and the snorkeling here is also something to treasure so there is something for everyone here.

So there you have it. A countdown of beaches for everyone and for every occasion. Italy hasn’t always been top of the list for beach getaways but we believe that this list shows that it can be, and best of all, there are plenty of spots that the majority of tourists don’t know about, so you can still get everything you crave from a beach break without worrying about someone else trampling all over it!
