Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam-Audio Review

Cast: Balakrishna Kola, Wamiqa Gabbi
Music: Amrit
Lyrics: Amrit,Vivek
Direction: Geetanjali Selvaraghavan

Album Analysis:

Mora Saiyya
Singers: Vijay Prakash, Shakthisree Gopalan
The song that comes from the top draw! ‘Mora Saiyya’ has a surreal chime about it and the singing totally uplifts the tune. Vijay Prakash delivers the various pitches required in this tune and Shakthisree is effective as well. The interlude arrangements from live instruments are blissful. Winner all the way!

Maalai Nerathu Mayakkama
Singer: Amrit
Just the type of song where you’d pick up the guitar and start strumming. ‘Maalai Nerathu Mayakkama’ has the old wine quality to it and the soulful lyrics add a great amount to the tune. Amrit’s rendition has a bit of fragility to it and that works in favour of the song.
Soothing!

Sarakka
Singer: Amrit
Highly staple! ‘Sarakka’ is a typical Tamil cinema ‘drink’ song. The arrangements are highly template & there is nothing to take away from the lyrics as well. Skip to the next one!

Mokka Piece
Singer: Benny Dayal
Dubstep seems to be new thing in K-town music! Amrit gives us his try in that genre with a funky tune with quirky arrangements. The lyrics are strictly ‘youth functional’. Benny Dayal has been given good scope to improvise.

Ennodu
Singers: Amrit, Mili Nair
‘Ennodu’ is yet another whimsical track from Amrit which is carried off compellingly by Mili Nair. The track has a looped backgrounded arrangement. The chord shifts work in few places but the tempo seems to be running a bit fast for the tune’s weight.
Instrumentals: The Return of Love is a lovely instrumental containing cues from the ‘Maalai Nerathu Mayakama’ track whereas ‘Two Opposites’ has signature Selvaraghavan written on it with a beautifully composed string section.

On the whole, ‘Maalai Nerathu Mayakkama’ is an interesting debut for Amrit. The album does blow hot and cold with songs like ‘Maalai Nerathu’ & ‘Mora Seiyya’ being brilliant and the others not quite upto that. The instrumental tracks sound great & it looks like Amrit has catered to the needs of the movie perfectly.
