Oru Naal Iravil Review

Over the years, Malayalam remakes in Tamil have either turned out to be classics or went unnoticed. Thankfully, Oru Naal Iravil a faithful remake of much acclaimed Malayalam movie, Shutter has been helmed by editor turned director, Antony with great integrity.
Thanks to the congruous casting, the simple yet powerful story has been eloquently told with genuine performances and most importantly packaged without any commercial compromises!
Middle aged, Sekar (Sathyaraj) is an NRI and he prefers to always travels in Suri’s(Varun) auto, who does all the errands to the former. Prejudging his daughter’s friendship, Sekar arranges for an immediate wedding, which eventually leads to heated arguments in the family.
The same day night, Sekar drinks with his close friends at his unused small shop. Once all his friends decide to leave, Sekar insists that Suri get more booze from nearby black-market and on their return, they happen to see a call girl (Anu Mol).
Sudden fickleness of Sekar leads to uninvited trouble as he gets locked inside his shop with the call girl and what follows is a series of events, which make him realize his mistakes and the climax unleashes a flimsy redemption of our protagonist!
There is a third character, Sethu Bharathi (Yugi Sethu), a struggling filmmaker whose script gets locked inside the shop.
Oru Naal Iravil’s biggest strength is the outstanding performance of all the actors. Especially, Sathyaraj as the middle aged man brings so much life to his character. The way he ferociously reacts in the initial portions and his expressions during the embarrassing situations are praise-worthy, once again the actor has proved that he is a bundle of talent!
After Sathyaraj, it is Anumol, Yugi Sethu and new face Varun who has done their respective roles with consummate ease. Cinematography by MS Prabhu is brilliant that his uncanny angles capture same locations with vivid tones to keep up the momentum while Navin's pulsating music gels well with the movie.
Although the film moves at leisure pace in the first half, kudos to the director for keeping the audiences engaged. Overall, Oru Naal Iravil is a easy watch!
