Tax Exemption committee praises 'Thegidi'

In Tamil Nadu, a fim with a pucca Tamil title and a clean U certificate goes for an entertainment Tax Committee for Tax exemption screening.

Thegidi was shown to that committee yesterday. After watching the film, the committee members have praised the movie.

'Thegidi'- A gripping murder mystery

There is a tremendous buzz about CV Kumar’s Thirukumaran Entertainment Ventures Thegidi, a musical thriller directed by P Ramesh. The film is being released through TCS in nearly 250 screens in Tamil Nadu on February 28.

Thegidi features Ashok Selvan and Janani Iyer in the leading roles, while the music of Nivas Prasanna has become a chartbuster. The soft melody song Yaar Ezhudhiyadho, is topping the charts. The film is directed by P Ramesh, who is the winner for "Naalaya Iyakkunar - Season 2" in 2011.

The film, described as a "murder mystery", was wrapped up within 45 days. CV Kumar, who produced Soodhu Kavvum and Pizza, is launching his brother C Senthil Kumar as an independent producer with his banner Vel Mediaa.

Thegidi  reunites several of the crew from CV Kumar’s trendsetting Soodhu Kavvum (2013) like cinematographer Dinesh, editor Leo John Paul and actor Ashok Selvan.

Janani Iyer is excited

After Avan Ivan and Paagan, petite actress Janani Iyer will be seen in this Friday`s release - Thegidi. In an exclusive chat with Sify, Janani Iyer talks about her working experience in Thegidi.
Janani is excited to work in a genre, she has not worked before - Thriller. She wants to work in all genres. So Thegidi worked out well for her. Producer C.V. Kumar`s banner which has created a niche for itself in Kollywood was a major attraction for Janani to accept Thegidi.

She was very impressed with the meticulous planning done by director P. Ramesh. Ramesh knew exactly what he wanted from the cast and crew. He made sure Janani looked like the-girl-next-door in Thegidi. She is playing an IT Professional `Madhu` in the movie.

Janani found a friendly co-star in male lead played by actor Ashok Selvan. She says that it was comfortable working with him and he was able to relate to him.

The whole shoot was completed in one schedule for about 45 days. Since the shoot was happening in Chennai, she was happy to return home every night.

Janani says the music and the camera work for Thegidi will be major highlights of the movie. Already songs by newcomer Nivas Prasanna are well received. Janani has dubbed for herself in the film.

Even though she is busy in Malayalam now, she is in talks with couple of Tamil directors and is looking forward to shuttling between Kollywood and Mollywood.

Thegidi Movie Review

Director: P. Ramesh
Cast: Ashok Selvan, Janani Iyer
Music: Nivas Prasanna
Producer: C. V. Kumar

CV Kumar's Thirukumaran Entertainments, Thegidi directed by debutant P Ramesh is a well-made, edge-of- the-seat thriller with enough twists and turns. It keeps the deception game going till the last scene, with a taut script and outstanding BGM by Nivas Prasanna.

As a director who made a name as a short filmmaker Ramesh keeps it tight with a crisp running time of 2 hours, keeping you hooked till the end. Another thing that makes the film tick is the believability factor of the story, which could have happened in real life.

The film has a great premise. A film has a hero with a keen observational skill who after studying criminology wants to take up a job of a detective officer. The idea is fresh, and director Ramesh deserves full marks on that score.

Vetri (Ashok Selvan) comes to Chennai and joins a private detective agency and his passion for work keeps him going till he meets a new “subject” Madhu (Janani Iyer). He starts liking her but realises that she is in danger and now the hunter becomes the hunted.

The film keeps you riveted in the first half and builds up to a dramatic twist at the end, one that, like the traditional rabbit in the hat, you weren't expecting. But by then, it's a bit too late as you have already predicted it.

Ashok Selvan, as the inquisitive detective is subtle and conveys a lot through his body language and pleasing face. Janani Iyer in a girl next door type role provides adequate support and is good. Admittedly the two make a fetching pair and seem to share a crackling chemistry.

The film is refreshing for its unusual casting, with mostly unknown faces like Jayakumar, Pradeep Nair and others being entrusted with important roles. Jayaprakash as the police officer and Kaali as the hero’s friend are likeable.

Another highlight of the film is Nivas Prasanna’s music and extraordinary BGM. The romantic melody Yaar Ezhuthiatho... is very soothing and BGM goes with the narration. Everything is in sync with the story whether it is Dinesh Krishnan’s camera or Leo John Paul’s editing.

As suspense thriller, Thegidi is a well-researched, purposefully executed film that works perfectly well. This is a film good enough to merit a trip to the multiplex.

Ashok Selvan overwhelmed with 'Thegidi' response

In an exclusive chat, Thegidi hero Ashok Selvan talks about the film and much more.

Ashok’s previous movie Pizza2: The Villa received mixed feedback from the critics and the public. Still he considers that the movie is close to his heart and is very proud of it.

The tables have completely turned for Thegidi. Ashok is overwhelmed with the unanimous positive response to Thegidi both from the critics as well as from public.

He did in fact visit few theatres screening the film. He was surprised to see the fabulous response from both the multiplex and single screen audiences. People were applauding and laughing for the same scenes irrespective of A or B centre.

Ashok is very thankful to producer CV Kumar who produced all his three movies. He says it was CV Kumar who gave him such a good platform. Without him, he would be still a struggling actor today. Post Thegidi success, he says CV Kumar is happy and his banner Thirukumaran Entertainment has become a brand for quality cinema.

He also says Director P.Ramesh was always confident about Thegidi’s response even before the release. He always planned everything well. Even when there were some who doubted his capability while making the film, Ramesh stood his ground and he proved himself with the success.

Ashok is also happy that the movie has helped him and his co-star Janani Iyer to get a firm footing in Tamil Cinema. Now both are looking forward to their next phase of their career in Kollywood.
