The world loves a juicy conspiracy theory, so it’s no surprise that most notorious events in history have attracted alternative explanations, some zany, some quite plausible.
Here we reveal the greatest conspiracy theories of all time.



What: New York terrorist attacks, September 11 2001

Conspiracy theory:
Eight years after the event, conspiracy theories continue to surround 9/11. The latest suggests the destruction of the towers was caused by nano-thermite - a substance with more power than dynamite.
It is claimed ten tonnes of it were found in rubble near Ground Zero.
Other theories suggest the CIA turned a blind eye, and that the towers were detonated by Bush’s government as a pretext to wage war in the Middle East.
Theorists reckon the impact of two planes was not enough to cause the towers’ collapse, while emergency services claim to have heard explosions from inside the buildings before the planes hit.

1969 moon landings



What: The moon landings, July 1969

Conspiracy theory:
The space race was so important in the Cold War that America had to get there first – so NASA faked it.
Theorists claim pictures of Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong on the ‘moon’ are mocked up due to the movement of the flag planted on the surface and the lack of stars in the sky.

Princess Diana's death



What: Princess of Wales’ death, August 1997

Conspiracy theory:
MI6 agents were responsible for Diana’s death, believing her relationship with Dodi a danger to the state. The theory is they blinded Henri Paul with an ultra bright light from the Fiat Uno spotted at the scene before switching his sober blood sample for one which showed intoxication.
Theorists also claim the Princess was pregnant at the time of her death.

7/7 tube bombings



What: 7/7 tube bombings, July 2005

Conspiracy theory:
The four suicide bombers who have been blamed for the attacks weren’t responsible; devices were hidden underneath the floor of the tube carriages instead of in their backpacks.
Theories also revolve around a photo of the four at Luton station in which conspiracists claim one of the bombers is superimposed. Those ‘in the know’ say the man in the white hat has his arm behind a railing and the rest of his body in front of it. The bar behind his head also goes across and in front of his face.

Marilyn Monroe’s death



What: Marilyn Monroe’s death, August 1962

Conspiracy theory:
While the official story is that Marilyn committed suicide, conspiracists have claimed this is impossible as it was a barbiturate enema which killed her, and this could not have been self-administered.
Her relationship with JFK, during which he reportedly told her top government and mafia secrets, is seen as the motive.

Indian Ocean tsunami



What: Indian Ocean tsunami, December 2004

Conspiracy theory:
The tsunami of 2004 came about due to India trying to steal a march on Pakistan in the race towards nuclear weapons, testing them in the ocean and causing the earthquake which started the tsunami that killed over 200,000 people.
Other theories suggest India created the huge waves with electromagnetic pulses and that they had backing, and co-operation, from Israel and the US to wipe out Muslims in the area.

Death of JFK



What: Death of JFK, November 1963

Conspiracy theory:
There was more than one shooter on that fateful day, and the fatal shots came from the grassy knoll beside the car, not the Texas Book Depository where Lee Harvey Oswald was based.
Viewings of the famous Zapruder film seem to show Kennedy’s head falling back and to the left - inconsistent with Oswald’s angle.

Lockerbie bombings



What: Lockerbie bombings, December 1988

Conspiracy theory: The CIA were running drugs from Europe to the US in Operation Corea – in which Syrian drug dealers were using Pan AM flights to carry narcotics.
The story goes that on 20 December 1988 drug runners switched a drugs package for a bomb, destroying the plane and killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew members on board. Apparently agents on their way to tell Washington about the drug-running were on board flight 103.

What: Roswell incident, July 1947

Conspiracy theory:
A UFO containing alien bodies crash-landed in Roswell in 1947 and the US government covered it up. Talk of alien autopsies, eye witness accounts and the back-tracking of the official line from the US military have ensured Roswell’s place in the conspiracy hall of fame.

Titanic: the ship that didn't sink



What: The sinking of the Titanic, April 1912

Conspiracy theory:
It wasn’t RMS Titanic which sunk but its sister ship the Olympic. Rather than stump up for repair costs after the Olympic crashed, the shipping line switched ships, crashed the Titanic and cashed in on a massive insurance payout.
This theory revolves around the fact that the ship’s owner cancelled his ticket and boiler men resigning.

According to some, the AIDS virus was created in a lab by the World Health Organisation, the KGB or the CIA, as a way to keep down the population.
