How To Rock The Wok (Plus Recipes)

A wok is a fantastic way to expand your dinner horizons. Start cooking tonight with one of these six beginner recipes and easy instructions to break in your wok. With a wok, you can make stir-fry vegetable and noodle dishes that are tasty and healthy. Choose the right pan, oil, and ingredients and get started.

When looking for a wok, there are three things to keep in mind: size, shape, and material. A flat-bottomed, 14-inch, carbon steel pan works best. This large size provides room for a variety of ingredients and maximizes the surface area of the burner. The carbon steel material conducts heat and is naturally non-sticking.

Breaking in your wok is crucial as it ensures food items don’t stick.  Start by scrubbing the surface of your wok with steel wool, soap, and hot water. Dry your wok off, then preheat it on your burner. Saute simple ingredients, like oil, scallions, and ginger for 15 minutes. Lastly, take it off the stove, rinse with hot water and a sponge, then dry it off. These initial steps bring your wok to life.

Get the best flavor and tenderness from your stir-fried meals by using a few tricks. For example, if your recipe calls for meat, thinly slice the cut across the grain to achieve ideal tenderness. Chop your ingredients into roughly the same sizes for even cooking. Don’t forget to use peanut or canola oil for perfect stir-frys.

Cooking with a wok is fun and healthy. Try out these six recipes for beginners and find out which one is your favorite.

This Is What Your Pet Thinks About

Have you ever wondered what your pet would say if it could talk? A talking pet makes life easier. Or does it?

Have you ever stepped on your dog’s tail and regretted it for the next 24 hours? It would be great if your pet could say something like – “no, man. It’s cool. It could have happened to anyone.”

Talking pets could help us solve the enduring mystery of why cats think they rule the universe. Do cats think they’re superior creatures or want to leave domesticated life for the wild?

What if your parrot could give his opinion on a topic, and not just repeat yours. Maybe your pet has seen something you would have wanted to know, but the bird couldn’t tell you because it was too busy repeating your uttered sentences.

Imagine you have the power of Dr. Dolittle and you can talk to animals. How great would that be? Or would it? What if you’ve mistreated your pet and now he wants to get back to you by saying mean things to you?

15 Forbidden Foods From Around The World (That You Probably Eat)

Who would ban salt or ketchup? Around the world and even in space, certain foods are banned for all sorts of reasons, including a few that are probably in your kitchen pantry right now.

In the United States, a strong notion of individual choice means that we expect to get pretty much anything we want, especially when it comes to food. But in other countries, culture and politics means that certain foods are not available

Ketchup in France is served in schools only occasionally so that students don’t lose sight of traditional French cuisine. Salt and pepper may seem like something astronauts would not want to give up, but the truth is they can’t use it because the tasty grains would float away rather than stick to their food.

Norway, Austria and the countries of the European Union ban ingredients they deem harmful, such as chlorine used to wash chicken and certain food preservatives. More than half of Europe does not allow the use of genetically modified soybeans.

Speaking of Singapore, don’t even try to chew gum in that country! In an effort to keep the streets clean, Singapore banned chewing gum and violators can be fined $1,000 and face up to two years in prison. Check out this list for the reasons behind the top 15 banned foods.

The Impact Running Has On Your Body

Ever wondered if the phrase “runner’s high” was a real thing? Science proves running changes your body. The most significant impact running has on the body is the physical gain. For example, running strengthens your heart. When you run, oxygen pumps through the heart faster and more efficiently than before. Running increases endurance levels and energy. Plus it boosts your metabolism, so you keep burning calories even when you’re standing still. Running can result in weight loss and stronger legs.

Mental health improves with running as well. We know that active people tend to be more optimistic. This positive attitude helps runners better handle stress. Research shows that runners also have a sharper mind to stave off dementia and even get better sleep!

Running can take a physical toll at times. You can get aching knees if you run too much. The kneecap becomes irritated leading to sharp pains. Others face issues with their toes. However, the benefits outweigh the risks.

Running is a great way to age gracefully. Running changes the body and you’ll notice improvements in no time.

How to Find The Right Business Partner

If you’re considering a business partner for your company, then it’s essential to find the person that balances out your personality. Just because you have a like-minded friend in the industry doesn’t mean you’ll make excellent partners. Instead, you need to consider your strengths and find a business partner that fills in the blanks.

Start by determining which of the 8 personalities fit you. For example, if you struggle with making decisions, then finding a decision-maker will benefit your business the most. Whereas, if risk scares you, then a risk taker personality balances you out and provides the road to profitable growth.

Once you’ve decided which type of person makes the best partner, then look at your prospects. Cross off anyone that you haven’t known for at least a year. Then double check to ensure that your core values are comparable to each other. While you can differ on opinions, you want to have similar ideals.

Determining your perfect business partner takes time, but once you get to the end, then it’s as simple as writing up the contract. Strike a balance by partnering with a fellow entrepreneur that complements your personality.

Best Tips For Storing 40 Types Of Fresh Produce

Fresh fruits and vegetables are excellent for health. Unfortunately, fresh produce doesn’t last as long as processed foods. Find out how to store your fresh items for long-lasting deliciousness. Storing fruits and vegetables isn’t rocket science. Instead, it’s a matter of knowing where and how to save produce, along with knowing how long it’ll keep.

When it comes to storing your apples, you should keep them unwrapped in the refrigerator. Apples will last for 3 weeks before going bad.  Same goes for oranges. Keep them in an open container in the fridge, and you’ll keep them for 2 weeks. Berries are a little more difficult. Berries only last 3-5 days uncovered or vented in the refrigerator.

Storage for vegetables varies just as widely as it does for fruits. With cucumbers, you should keep them in plastic wrap. As for radishes, you should keep them in their bag with a dry paper towel. They’ll stay good for 2 weeks with this method.

If you had trouble getting the most out of your produce before, not to worry. Proper storage methods give you plenty of time to eat up your favorites.

How To Create A Happy And Healthy Office Environment

Most people spend about eight hours every day at work, five days a week. For many, the office can be a very stressful place, with crowded, impersonal workspaces, stale and continuously recycled indoor air, and high-calorie vending machine snacks. All of these add up to an unhealthy environment. Studies show that just sitting at a desk for long hours can be harmful to your health. Luckily, a quiet transformation is underway in the way employers and workers see the office.

Employers are realizing that a happy and healthy office is also a more productive one, and are taking steps to promote workplace wellness. This can mean changes across many different fronts, from personalized workspaces to office yoga. Many offices have adopted innovations like adjustable desks that can be used to work while sitting or standing. Indoor communicating stairs encourage movement through the workday.

Healthy food choices in vending machines and pet-friendly offices go a long way toward helping workers feel more relaxed, and better able to focus on their work. Intangibles like worker recognition programs and better communication can work wonders for motivation. Something as simple as scheduling a meeting before lunch instead of after can contribute to employee satisfaction.

Office spaces too are getting a makeover, with strong influences from green design. Shared lounge areas with cozy couches and throws and cleaner indoor air can improve morale and creativity. Natural lighting is linked to mental concentration and better short-term memory recall. If access to daylight is not possible, designers try to use variable lighting that matches daily circadian rhythms. Acoustic design is used to block out stress-inducing external noise while making it easier to have private conversations indoors.

The best element of workplace wellness is that it’s easy to begin with small simple steps and then work up towards adding more features of a healthy and happy office.

Hurricane Help: A Comprehensive Emergency Supply Kit

Don’t get caught off guard in an emergency. With hurricane season in full force, having a hurricane supply kit is essential to your safety.

Take the time to double check your supplies and make sure you have everything you need on hand to keep your family safe. Having food and water after a natural disaster is necessary. However, including other items makes the hours after an emergency easier on your family.

When it comes to food, nutrients are important. You should have enough food to last for three to seven days. You’ll need a gallon of water per person and a seven to ten day supply.  You’ll want to pack non-perishable foods, snack foods, cooking tools, fuel, utensils, and cleaning materials. If you have an infant or pet, then keep their nutritional needs in mind.

Tools and supplies help in an emergency, so make sure you have each listed item on hand. A pocket knife that includes other tools, like a screwdriver, corkscrew, and scissors, saves space and is multi-functional. Keep at least one flashlight handy, along with towels and buckets to help with sanitation. If you have canned goods stored, then make sure you have a can opener. Don’t forget your important documents, first aid kit, and activites for children.

This supply kit is a great way to prepare for a hurricane. You’ll have all the tools you’ll need to help you in a time of crisis.

The Fascinating Sleep Habits Of Dogs

Did you know that dogs spend 50% of their lives sleeping? There’s a reason for that, and it’s important to let your dog get its sleep.

Although 45% of dog owners admit to sharing a bed with their dog, human and dog sleeping habits differ.

A primary reason that dogs sleep so much is that they spend 10% of their slumber in REM or the “deep sleep” stage. The less time a dog stays in REM, they more sleep they’ll need throughout the day to get an adequate amount of rest. Compare this to humans who spend 25% of their sleep in REM. Depending on the breed, dogs can sleep up to 18 hours of the day.

The more active a dog is, the less sleep they require. Service animals or police dogs are working around the clock, so they don’t get as much sleep as other dogs. You can keep your dog active by trying tricks such as stimulating toys, play dates with other pups, and scavenging games.

At the end of the day, dogs need sleep. Sleep allows dogs to stay well-rested, energized, and ready for the next day.

Top Lessons From The Oldest People Ever Recorded

We all hope to live long healthy lives, but very few of us are likely to live as long as the people on today’s infographic. Nevertheless, we can still take nuggets of advice from these supercentenarians to help us live out our best lives.

Some factors that affect longevity such as fitness, diet, and lifestyle are within our control, but unfortunately, there are some factors which are not. One such element is gender. Out of the 100 oldest people ever recorded, only six are male. Sorry guys, it looks like we got the short end of the stick here.

Interestingly, a vast majority of the 100 oldest people live/lived in either the United States or Japan, with 69 of them coming from one of those countries. The next most prolific nation only has five people.

Though Japan is known to have a high life expectancy and the U.S. has a large population in combination with a high-quality lifestyle available to those who can afford it, it’s still unusual to see so many of the world’s oldest people in these countries.

Stress can kill you, literally. According to several of the ten oldest people, it’s important to stay as stress-free as possible. Science backs this up, as stress is proven to harm the body over long periods of time. Jeanne Calment, a French woman who lived to be 122 years old, said, “If you can’t do anything about it, don’t worry about it.”

Surprisingly, none of the top 10 oldest people have/had any crazy diets or health routines. Many of them loved certain foods that they would consume in moderation like chocolate, sushi, and eggs. It looks like you can eat your favorite foods and still maintain a healthy lifestyle: just do it in moderation.

The Harsh Realities of Distracted Driving

The myths surrounding cell phones and driving are alarming. Recent data debunks these myths and proves distracted driving occurs with all forms of mobile use. Distracted driving is an extreme epidemic in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “During daylight hours, approximately 481,000 drivers are using cell phones while driving.”

As much as we think we can successfully multitask behind the wheel, we are unable to do so. The concept of multitasking is not possible.

Your brain can’t focus on two activities happening at the same time, so when it comes to driving and using your phone, it’s a recipe for disaster. The brain switches between both tasks, so your reaction time slows down. You’re at a higher risk of a traffic violation or accident when talking on the phone while driving.

As tempting as it is to use your phone at stop lights, you should steer away from doing so. A recent study from AAA showed that drivers spend up to 27 seconds being distracted at a red light. Imagine the dangers you and passengers can experience in that 27 seconds.

Although your cell phone can be addictive, you should steer clear of using it while driving. Stay alert, stay attentive, and stay safe. You’re helping yourself and those around you. Drive safe!

In this infographic you will find 7 useful tips on using parental controls to protect your kids online, because the rules of the internet don’t really help kids.

Being exposed to inappropriate web content is one of the biggest threats the internet poses for your child. While some websites have their own kid-friendly versions, like Safety Mode on YouTube, you might still want to get an internet content filter from this list of recommended tools. It will allow you to block certain domains or content that includes keywords of your choice.

An alternative option, especially good for younger kids, is the child-safe internet browser. It already has a list of pre-approved websites and games that you can edit at will. Be sure to check the top 3 browsers we suggest in the infographic.

Most importantly, you should educate your children about potential risks from early days – show them a good example of internet ethics. If your child trusts you, he/she will feel safe sharing their online troubles and experiences. Knowing these 7 tips will allow you to help them!

Should Your Company Outsource Work?

What if you could accomplish everything your business needs, at a fraction of the cost? Outsourcing promises cost cutting benefits, but what could be the tradeoffs?Hiring a contractor or outsourcing means that you’re hiring someone from outside of your company to perform work.  Outsourcing can allow businesses to watch their budgets but also reap the benefits of accessing expertise, flexible staffing, increasing efficiency and in the end, generate more profit.

Do you have unfinished projects, but no time to complete them? Delegate these projects and free up some time.  Growing companies with small staff may not have the funds to hire full timers for everything.  For example outsourcing for affordable graphic design is often one of the first needs of a small business. If you’re a solo-entrepreneur, being able to find good help is key. Repetitive work or back-office operations are perfect for hiring out.

The main appeal lies in outsourced work being a fraction of the cost of hiring a new employee. Outsourcers are paid on a per-hour or per-project basis, without incurring extra costs like paid leave or other benefits.

The key to productive outsourcing is taking the time to hire the right people or third-party. If prospective contractors will handle sensitive information, then make sure to carefully vet candidates.

If you’re not sure whether or not your business should outsource part of its operations, then check out today’s infographic!

7 Impossible Engineering Feats Of The Ancient World

The engineering capabilities of ancient civilizations is mind-blowing when you consider the lack of available mechanized devices. Societies in South and East Asia, Africa, South America, and Central America were especially adept at creating sophisticated structures that compete with modern construction.

The oldest wonder on today’s infographic is the lost city of Mohenjo Daro, which is a nearly 5,000-year-old ruin in Sindh, Pakistan that was discovered in 1920. The Bronze Age city, translated as “mound of the dead,” has a street grid and an advanced drainage system that includes flushing toilets. From 2500 to 1900 B.C., the modest and clean Indus community existed before it mysteriously disappeared.

In China, the 232-foot tall Leshan Giant Buddha was finished in the 9th Century during the Tang Dynasty. A local monk named Hai Tong hoped that that the Buddha would calm turbulent waters that dismantled vessels traveling down the junction of the Min and Dadu River, where the stature sits above.

Archaeologists estimate that it took 90 years to carve the structure out of a red sandstone cliff face. Hidden within the Buddha is a drainage system complete with gutters and channels on the head, arms, and clothes that displaces rainwater and keeps the inner wood dry, which ultimately protects the ancient creation from decay.

Why aren’t the Egyptian pyramids on the list? Besides being well-known to the world, they don’t compare to the mass of the El Mirador temple complex, which has a volume of 2,800,000 cubic meters, making it the largest pyramid in the world. For comparison, Egypt’s Great Pyramid of Giza and Khufu are 200,000 cubic meters smaller.

With the El Tigre temple as the centerpiece, the area was home to 200,000 citizens in 300 B.C., but the complex society of connected settlements was abandoned 2,000 years ago. Amazingly, every roof in the city was designed to usher rainwater into reservoirs, and a sculptural panel that depicts the Mayan creation story decorates the wall of a channel that funnels rain through the city’s central administrative area.

These ancient engineering wonders that also include the cities of Saksaywaman, Peru, Chand Baori, India, Teotihuacan, Mexico, as well as the underground churches of Lalibela, Ethiopia, compete with many of modern society’s sleek skyscrapers, suspension bridges, and underground tunnel systems.

Our ancient ancestors were precise and consistent when it comes to civil engineering.

Here’s The Lowdown About Coffee

Coffee is one of those drinks that’s strangely addictive.  Just about everyone I know loves to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning. They love the smell, the taste, and the variety that coffee brings.
54% of people drink coffee on a daily basis. Coffee drinkers usually pick Robusta beans or Arabica beans. If you want to enjoy coffee without the effects of caffeine, then you’ll prefer Arabica beans. Robusta beans contain 50% more caffeine than Arabica beans. Instant coffees contain blends of Robusta beans whereas Arabica are found in more distinct drinks.

There are many different cups that coffee drinkers and coffee makers use for their drinks. Some come with benefits of usage, but others come with a cost. Paper and plastic cups are commonly used in coffee shops, but did you know that they can leach chemicals into your drink? Instead of using these material cups, try a traditional or demitasse mug. Non-disposable cups are cheap, keep your drink warm, and are less harmful to the environment.

If you’re a coffee novice, you should be able to become more proficient after reading today’s infographic. Try new blends, make your own drink, and enjoy. If you want to take your coffee knowledge to the next level, here’s how to order like a pro in a coffee shop.
