Dream of boy with cancer to become police officer comes true



The dream of a boy afflicted with cancer of becoming a police officer one day came true for seven-year-old Suraj Rajvanshi after he was made the 'officer-in-charge' of a police station for a day.

The boy dressed in a 'police uniform' was taken from the Thakurpukur Cancer Hospital to the New Town police station where officers snapped to attention and saluted him.

The officers, in deference to the young age of their new 'officer-in-charge', first gave him a treat with chocolates before getting down to the serious business of briefing him about the role of the personnel at the police station.

After the 'briefing', Rajvanshi, was taken for a ride in a patrol car with an escort.
Thereafter the excited boy posed for photographs with weapons like revolvers and rifles.

"He was inquisitive and asked us many questions. We screened a CCTV footage of a police station for him to show him how we worked," Deputy Commissioner of Bidhannagar Police Santosh Nimbalkar told PTI.

A local NGO had approached the police commissioner seeking help in fulfilling the dream of the boy who was in a terminal stage of cancer.

"We agreed as this was his dream. Doctors said that the real life experience at a police station would have a positive psychological effect on his mind," the DCP said.

"This was a gesture on our part to tell the world that the police are also involved in such emotional work," he said.

Tired but happy at the end of the day yesterday, the boy was taken back to hospital by his mother.
