Kaaviya Thalaivan Music Review

Cast:    Siddharth, Prithviraj, Vedhicka, Anaika Soti, Nassar, Thambi Ramaiah, Ponvannan, Babu Antony, Singampuli, Mansoor Ali Khan
Direction:    Vasanthabalan
Production:    Varun Manian, S.Sashikanth
Music:    A. R. Rahman

Alli Arjuna Voices: Haricharan, Bela Shende Lyrics: Vaalee

Probably the first glimpse of history has thus far been contained in, and brought to us first by drama. Being a period-set film that is clearly based on a drama troupe, the album opens with a song that would get you to visualize a drama staged live in front of your eyes. The song flows narrating the famous fable on Alli and Arjuna, presumably staged by the troupe in the film. Welcoming the crowd of audience, the song first sings praise of Alli the queen, her beauty and how Arjuna instantly falls for her.

Just as the dramatic entry of the deity is savoured, there is a distinct change in rhythm, yet the transition sounds effortlessly seamless. What follows is a rendition in Bela in her dripping sweet voice. As the scene changes, so does the music flow accordingly – rough, pleading, soft, cold and firm. Instruments predominantly used in this song are tabla, kanjira, flute, strings of various frequencies and keys. However, orchestra towards the tail of the song, in combination with mridangam, is a stronghold for this track.

However, in the picture, the song is split into eight sections, with each giving importance to a particular conversational portion, and divided and segregated on the basis of instrument usage, more than the others. With so many intonations and instruments all the way through the long tack, with just Haricharan’s and Bela’s voices flowing like butter, it is hard to categorize this song into anything but typical Indian classical folk.

Aye Mr. Minor! Voices: Haricharan, Shashaa Tirpathi Lyrics: Pa Vijay

The flick is period set, and this song is so right there! Be prepared to tune into the reconstruction of the 60’s or 70’s sort of melodious romantic duet, with both instruments and the rendition being very typical; only that this one sounds more contemporary. Be it the tapping rhythm of conga or the tingles of a xylophone, the song could get away as being one of those yesteryear classics; except only for the signature that it opens with, which is also equally a classic, but only of the more recent past.

Shashaa has the voice that the perfect place in both Indian classical and jazz books at the same time, and is the right choice for this song, while Haricharan is the highly convincingly adaptable singer that he always is. The prime importance in the sweet duet, that is aptly worded for the mood that it suggests, from the past, is garnered by the signature tunes thrown in between stanzas. All in all, this one is a sweet number.

Sandi Kuthirai Voice: Haricharan Lyrics: Pa Vijay

This one again seems to be a dramatic song, but sounds more like a song with an underlying message, with however a horse considered as the obvious subject of concern. The lyrics are comic, with supportive tones here and there, on a broadly jazz number with extensive use of congas, mouth organ, trumpet and xylophone. Further, this song is likely to be pictured as a staged comedy, as the laughter towards the end suggests. It is amazing how each note could carry a distinct word, and the song flows in a definite narrative sequence, in a seamless and breathless rendition by Haricharan. This one at four minutes is a lighthearted number.

Sollividu Sollividu Voice: Mukesh Lyrics: Pa Vijay

And now for the real majesty of a warlike scenario, as the bells would ring on the first mention of the film’s title. This song begins with the majestic thumps of drums and symphony of orchestra, and takes shape in a methodically metered number in the wake of rendition in Mukesh’s deep voice. Though the rhythm does not change all through the song, intonation in rendition changes from anger, angst and pleading. A song questioning the war, is an excerpt from the Mahabharata, as though one sung by Arjuna to Krishna, on the purpose and results of the war that they jubilantly fight. While it began with majesty, the song ends in a sharp contrast softened by only flutes to back the mellowed down in the imploring rendition by Mukesh, in his versatile voice.

Thiruppugazh Voice: Vani Jayaram Lyrics: Saint Arunagirinathar

One of the most celebrated yesteryear voices has been brought back to Kollywood retaining all the freshness, wrapped in her all-so-sweet voice, for the unparalleled classic – Thiruppugazh. Set to an enchanting tune supported by gentle veena and mridangam, this track in Vani Jayaram’s voice is a refreshingly divine revisit to the holy praise. Taking only a 2-minute excerpt from the voluminous Thiruppugazh, this one is a perfect interjection of prayer in a period-set album. Put your hands together.

Vaanga Makka Vaanga Voices: Haricharan, Dr. Narayan Lyrics: Na Muthukumar

This track has the most pleasant and warmly inviting advertisement for the drama troupe that the team is performing in. This is a track that we are already familiar with. Beginning with flute for support, the song takes shape in Haricharan’s strong voice against thavil, mridangam and veena. This track has almost all elements of a typical Tamil kutchery, and the distinct scent of the most ancient, classical and beautiful language, making for a lighthearted and enjoyable listening experience.

Haricharan’s and Dr. Narayan’s blend very well into one another’s seeming the song sound like rendition by single confident and optimistically enthusiastic voice. Worded in charming yet casual and colloquial Tamil, pictured to be sung somewhere about the temple town of Madurai, this one is an appealing number to the ears.

Yaarumilla Voices: Shwetha Mohan, Srinivas Lyrics: Pa Vijay

Beginning in flute gently backed by jingles, the song opens in Shwetha’s confident yet luscious voice of Shwetha’s. This is a love-letter sung out in rhythm, followed by the description of adoration. The track gradually gains strength in tabla and harmonium, with a melodious signature in refreshing notes on flute. From the feminine romantic solo, the song transitions through a gentle breezy orchestra of bass strings and flute, to the next section, where her fondness continues to fall in tandem with the rhythm. Srinivas’s voice is in the scene only for a brief hum, that adds depth and grip to the otherwise solo number. The song swings and flows in sweetness and love to a lilting and harmonious end.

Given that the film is period set and has a background of rich history to it, ‘Kaaviya Thalaivan’ album has the feel and temperament of music from a few decades back, with extensive involvement of street music, where dramas usually used to be staged. With one of the last few pieces of the legendary poet Vaalee and the one among the most famed prayer songs by Saint Arunagirinathar, also with bringing back Vani Jayaram to the pavilion and picking Haricharan for rendition predominantly, and he living up to the trust and promise, ‘Kaaviya Thalaivan’ is one of those rare classics that impresses you on each note and also would linger in your memory as one of the dire favourites, from AR Rahman.

'Kaaviya Thalaivan' to release on Nov 7th

Vasantha Balan’s magnum opus-Kaaviya Thalaivan starring Siddharth, Prithviraj and Vedhika is most likely to release on Nov 7th, once Diwali releases settle down at the box office.

While the team behind Kaaviya Thalaivan has confirmed a November release, an official announcement regarding Nov 7th is expected soon.

Oscar Winner AR Rahman has scored the music. He has almost completed the BGM work for the movie. Of late, Vasantha Balan was very vocal about the backlog of several Tamil movies and the struggle faced by them in getting screens in Tamil Nadu.

Since Uttama Villain is not releasing in November, I going for a late Nov release and Anegan is looking at either a late November or early Dec release, the makers of Kaaviya Thalaivan have decided to go with an early Nov release for their movie.

So far, Siddharth is having a dream run in his second home coming with quality movies to his name, and ‘KT’ is sure to take him to another level.

Siddharth does the unthinkable in ‘Kaaviya Thalaivan’

Siddharth is one of the most successful actors in K-town as he has given 4 back to back hits since ‘Kaadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Eppadi’. ‘The ‘Jigarthanda’ actor is someone who values the script more than his role and keep delivering worthy movies in various flavors. Our sources confirm that, Siddharth transformed himself in 42 different get ups in ‘KT’ and his role will be remembered forever.

While talking to the media people, Vasantha Balan has confirmed that the movie is not scripted on the lives of Kittappa & KB Sundarambal, but there will be some obvious shades of their life. ‘Kaaviya Thalavian’ features Siddharth, Prithviraj, Vedhika, & Anaika Soti in the lead roles. Reliance media & Y Not studio jointly producing this venture and A.R. Rahman has scored the music.

‘Kaaviya Thalaivan’ release gets postponed?

Director, Vasantha Balan’s dream movie ‘Kaaviya Thalaivan’ has hit another roadblock prior to its release and the movie’s chance of making it to the halls for the next Friday is getting ruled out now. Sources say that Rahman hasn’t completed the re-recording yet and the makers are looking forward to get the movie before the last weekend of this month.

The makers delayed the release of ‘KT’ to ensure they are not competing against big budget commercial movies, but, it they do not release the movie on Nov 21, the chances of facing ‘Anegan’ and ‘Lingaa’ in a week or two is very much possible. An official confirmation regarding the release of the movie is expected in a day or two.

'Kaaviya Thalaivan' postponed

Vasanthabalan's magnum opus Kaaviya Thalaivan starring Siddharth, Prithviraj and Vedhika was to release on November 14. The promotions for the film which has music by AR Rahman had already started. Now it has been postponed to November 28.

The delay by AR Rahman scoring the BGM for the movie is being cited as one of the reason. Some are speculating they needed more time to get Entertainment tax exemption certification for the movie.

Earlier, there was a talk of a road show and Q&A sessions being planned in tier-II towns across Tamil Nadu. Now it looks like those events will get postponed as well.

Kaaviya Thalaivan is set in the 1940’s with the Tamil theatre movement as the background.  Y’Not Sashi and Radiance Media Varun Manian have produced the movie.

'Kaaviya Thalaivan' adopts new distribution method!

Vasantha Balan’s magnum opus Kaaviya Thalaivan is all set for a Nov 28th release. Siddharth, Prithviraj and Vedhika play important roles in the movie which has music by AR Rahman.

The Producers Consortium- Dream Factory which is set up for Marketing and Distribution by CV Kumar, YNot Sashi, Studio Green’s Prabhu and others are marketing Kaaviya Thalaivan in Tamil Nadu.

They have sold the movie in Madurai (MR) and Trichy (TT) through NRA – Non-Refundable Advance method. This is the first time a Tamil movie is sold in this method in TN. This method is popular in AP.

The usual method is MG – Minimum Guarantee, in which a large sum is expected from distributors upfront. Compared to that, in NRA, a non-refundable advance is expected. Any amount collected after that is equally shared between the producer and distributor.

Let’s hope this new method brings profit to all the parties involved.

‘Kaaviya Thalaivan’ introduces a healthy deal

In the past, we have witnessed many ugly fights between distributors and producers as the famous Minimum Guarantee (MG) bombs big time and the distributors, who have bought the movie by paying more than what was supposed to be; because of pre-release buzz. But, our neighboring states do follow a method called Non-Refundable advance, where the distributors decide among themselves and pay an X amount to get the rights.

The makers of ‘Kaaviya Thalaivan’ have adopted the NRA plan in Madurai & Trichy. If, the movie collects more than the initial amount, the same will be shared between producers and distributors. Insiders say that this move could well bring the balance between profit and loss and might encourage people to actively take part in the trade once again.

Kaaviya Thalaivan is a lifetime role: Vedika

Vasantha Balan’s magnum opus Kaaviya Thalaivan releases on Nov 28th.  Siddharth, Prithviraj and Vedhika are the lead actors of Kaaviya Thalaivan. In an exclusive interview, the leading lady Vedhika talks about her work experience in Kaaviya Thalaivan and much more:

Kaaviya Thalaivan is not your typical Tamil movie that releases every Friday. It’s a different kind of movie. How would you describe it?
Kaaviya Thalaivan is a period movie. It’s set in the pre-independence era with Tamil theatre/drama movement as the backdrop. Today’s audience can totally relate to it. It has everything you look for in a good cinema - all the emotions, friendship, romance, classical music, excellent characterizations etc, it’s a visual treat. Very rich in production values. Moreover, today’s audience is very smart and they accept good cinema irrespective of the genre.

We heard you are playing an interesting character in the movie. Can you tell more about your character?
I play a character by name Vadivaambaal , a 17 years old. She is artistically inclined. Interested in dramatics etc, a very different role. I would consider this as once in a lifetime role. I get to wear lot of period costumes and get-ups. Being a classical dancer myself, it helped me a lot. I’m blessed to have worked with late Choreographer Raghuram Master which was an unforgettable experience. Also Late Vaali Sir has written lyrics for KT. I watched lot of old classical Tamil movies – Saraswathi Sabatham, Thiruvilaiyadal and observed Veteran Actresses Padmini, Savithri to prepare for the role.

You worked with a National Award winning  director Bala in Paradesi. Now you are working with  another National Award winning director Vasanthabalan. How was that experience.
It was a great learning experience working with Dir. Vasanthabalan. He lets you prepare for the role. He does act as the guiding point and gives the brief. For a scene which required me to dance, he asked me to do my own dance steps. As you mentioned, it was great to work with to Back to Back National Award winning directors. He is not a tough task master. He is very calm and down to earth. Nowadays, heroines don’t get a good role to perform. He has given me a good role to perform. I’m excited.

Siddharth and Prithviraj are two good actors. How was the experience of working with them?
Both Siddharth and Prithviraj became good friends during the shoot. Their real life friendship reflects in the movie. In real life they both are intellectuals. They have lived their respective characters in KT.  The movie is all about acting. The movie has a good supporting cast too – Actor Nasser Sir, Thambi Ramaiah Sir and Kuyili Madam and several others.

Oscar Winner AR Rahman has scored music for Kaaviya Thalaivan. This is the second time you are acting in a movie in which he has scored music. How do you feel about that?
AR Rahman’s music is a major attraction of KT. He is an amazing musician. Very humble human being. His music touches the soul of the audience. We are very lucky to have him on-board. His music will take the movie to places. He is the pride of Indian cinema. He is very selective in choosing his movies. His acceptance to do Kaaviya Thalaivan tells lot about how good and interesting the script is.

It does take a lot of courage to produce a period movie like KT. What are your observations about the producers – YNot’s Sashi and Radiance Media’s Varun Manian?
Both of them want to deliver something new and unique to Tamil cinema. They don’t want to produce run of the mill movies. They are certainly trendsetters and pathbreakers. They came to the industry with an idea to produce quality movies. Both have leadership qualities. They assembled a grand team of 7 National Award winning Actors/Technicians for the movie which is a big deal.

Let’s take a diversion from KT and talk about your upcoming Malayalam movie – Cousins. Tell us something about it.
Cousins is a fun, gripping, colorful, entertaining and grand film. Directed by hit maker Vysakh. I’m paired opposite to Kunchako Boban. After Sringaravelan which was an entertainer which turned out be a blockbuster for last year’s Onam, I’m expecting Cousins to be the same for this Christmas.

Finally, you are loved so much in Social Media – Both in Facebook and Twitter. How is the experience of directly connecting with your fans/well-wishers?
I’m happy to have more than 3 Million Well-wishers on Facebook and 100 Thousand Well-wishers on Twitter. I’m happy to keep in touch with my well-wishers from four different industries as I have worked in all the four. Their love is self-less and they encourage me every day to do my best. I am blessed to have so many well-wishers supporting me.

'Kaaviya Thalaivan' gets tax exemption!

The producers of Kaaviya Thalaivan ynot Studios Sashikanth and Radiance Media Varun Manian along with its distributor Dream Factory heaved a sigh of relief. The film carrying U certificate has got entertainment tax exemption from the state government and is all set for release on November 28.

Vasanthabalan’s Kaaviya Thalaivan is a period drama set against the backdrop of the buzzing Tamil theatre of 1940’s in Madurai. It features Siddharth, Prithviraj, Vedhika and Nasser and has music by AR Rahman.

The film getting a tax exemption is a huge plus for the film, as screens in Tamil Nadu prefer tax free films. Kaaviya Thalaivan has a good buzz around it, and connoisseurs of good cinema are eagerly waiting for it.

Kaaviya Thalaivan is likely to release in nearly 300 screens in TN, and has got prime screens, inspite of 6 other small films releasing on the same day.

There is a lot of hope riding on the film.
