Critics choice: Top 15 movies of 2014



The last weekend of 2014 is over and as usual Tamil cinema had a record number of releases. Among all the movies released in 2014, we brings you the top 15 movies.

Note: The following list is purely based on the content and quality of the films and not on its box office performance.




Goli Soda



Set in Chennai’s Koyembedu market Vijay Milton’s Goli Soda is an interesting story of four adolescent kids fighting against the powerful market head in order to get their identity back.

Vijay Milton made the film with enough towering moments and some of the stunts performed by the kids were truly powerful just like watching any other mass hero’s movies.

Thegidi is basically a mind game thriller with some good writing and execution. The film was embraced by multiplex crowd and also got good reviews from critics.

Cuckoo



Debut director Raju Murugan’s Cuckoo is a poignant love story between two visually challenged youngsters, Tamizh and Suthanthira Kodi.

Raju Murugan’s writing is so detailed that he authentically portrayed the life of the visually challenged and also made sure that the film entertains the audience.

Inam



Santhosh Sivan’s Inam is another wonderfully made movie which is based on the life of Tamil youngsters who suffered in the Civil war in Sri Lanka.

Though the movie faced a ban in Tamil Nadu, critics showered praise for Santosh Sivan’s direction and the way he handled the issue.

Oru Kanniyum Moonu Kalavanigalum



Chimbu Devan’s Oru Kanniyum Moonu Kalavanigalum is a unique fantasy story based on how a minute difference in time can change the life of three friends who are on a mission to kidnap a bride.

The film had many comic elements and Chimbu Devan’s expertise in handling the tough screenplay has got rave reception from critics.

Vaayai Moodi Pesavum



Balaji Mohan’s Vaayai Moodi Pesavum is based on a novel concept, how silence could be a powerful weapon. Also, the director aesthetically portrayed the human relationships in detail.

When Tamil cinema moved to action thrillers, Balaji Mohan’s simple yet classy film is certainly a refreshing experience.

Mundasupatti got good critical acclaim and equally enjoyed by the masses.

The 80s set up, Munish Kanth character and the witty one liners based on the superstitious beliefs in the Mundasuppati village are thoroughly enjoyable.

Director Vijay’s Saivam emphasized the importance of joint family and also the main theme of being vegetarian.

Once again, Vijay proved that he can make films without violence and can portray family values in the most endearing fashion.

Debut director Vinoth’s Sathuranga Vettai is an entertaining story on a cunning con and his redemption in life.

Vinoth’s witty dialogues and Natraj’s dialogue delivery got fantastic reviews from critics.

Karthik Subbaraj’s Jigarthanda is the most celebrated movie among youngsters. The film had plenty of hair-raising moments and many compared Karthik Subbaraj with the renowned Quentin Tarantino.

Simhaa’s villainy act and Siddharth’s subtle performance got rave reception not to forget the kickass background score by Santosh Narayanan.

Kathai Thirakadhai Vasanam Iyakkam



After Jigarthanda, Parthiepan’s Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam is another meta-movie but without violence.

Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam is based on a story of a struggling assistant director and his romantic life. The film got excellent response from critics.

Pa Ranjith’s Madras is another movie that was widely celebrated by youngsters in social networking sites.

Ranjith showcased North Madras in a different color and the detailed portrayal of North Madras slang, life style and politics impressed many critics. It was Karthi's big comeback into commercial cinema after consecutive duds

With Jeeva, Suseenthiran once again proved that he is a sensible filmmaker with great social responsibility.

The film perfectly depicted the life of cricketers in Tamil Nadu and the community politics that exists within the cricket board.

Suseenthiran's Jeeva is a simple yet classy movie that bagged good reviews from critics.

Kaaviya Thalaivan



Vasanta Balan’s Kaaviya Thalaivan is a film about two ambitious drama artists of 1940, their friendship, egos and differences in ideology .

Critics lauded Vasanta Balan’s effort for recreating the life of drama artists. The way Siddharth, Nassar, Prithviraj and Vedhika performed in the film got tremendous appreciation. But sadly, the film did not rake in the moolah.

Mysskin’s Pisaasu is one of the most original ghost stories ever told in Tamil cinema. Instead of fear, Mysskin got the audience to feel for the ghost, love and cry for it.

Pisaasu opened with positive reviews and the film is having a good run at the box office.
