Bank Teller Duties

A bank teller is one of the most important people working at a bank. What does a company look for while hiring a bank teller? A bank teller need not be too qualified or too intelligent, but should be someone who the bank can trust with a lot of money! Here's an article on the bank teller duties. Read on for banking jobs.

Bank Teller Qualifications:

Like I said, the job of a bank teller is nothing complicated. A bank teller need not hold anything more than a high school diploma and basic computer skills. A teller is usually trained on the job. Personal skills and communication skills of a bank teller play a more important role. A bank teller must be courteous with the customer at all times and display good attitude. A bank teller is technically the face of the bank and hence must maintain a good image in front of the customers.

Bank Teller Duties and Responsibilities:

What are the bank teller responsibilities? There are different types of tellers and each one is entrusted with different duties and responsibilities. Some tellers are in charge of accepting deposits from customers. Suppose a customer wants to deposit some money in his or her bank account, it is the teller's duty to accept the money and update the account of the customer stating that the sum deposited by the customer has been added to his or her account.

The second type of bank teller is in charge of withdrawals. When a customer comes to bank to withdraw some money out of his account, it is the responsibility of the bank teller to dispense the exact amount which the customer has asked for and then update the account of the customer. There are quite a few sub-duties involved in this process. Unlike deposits-which can be made on behalf of another person-there are certain checks which need to be made to ascertain the identity of the person who is withdrawing the money, so that there is no fraud. The bank teller has to check for the signature of the person who is withdrawing the money as well as other details which establish the identity of the person.

The third duty of the tellers is to keep a check on how much money is in the vaults of the bank. It may be a duty entrusted to the head teller or any teller-depending upon the bank, to check the cash reserves in the bank in the morning before the bank starts and in the evening once the bank closes.

The fourth duty of the bank teller is to accept payment from outsiders on behalf of their customers. Suppose a college holds an account with the bank, instead of paying fees to the college each time, the college may ask the bank to accept the money into their account on their behalf.

The bank teller may also be in charge of giving out foreign currency at the prescribed exchange rate.

Bank Teller Salary Range:

The employment outlook for a bank teller is quite slow. Most banks keep their tellers for years till they decide to let go of them. So the most likely openings for a bank teller are if banks open new branches. The chances of an upgrade in the job of a bank teller is also quite less. The median average salary for a bank teller was around $23,610 annually in May 2008, but may vary depending upon the size of the bank and the experience of the teller.
