Karthi's 'Komban' in trouble, censor certificate pending!

Looks like Karthi's Komban is in trouble as the censor board is yet to certify the film and they want the producers to change many things including the title. We hear that the officials are reluctant to issue a 'U' certificate.

Earlier political outfits like Krishnasamy's Puthiya Tamilagam objected the release of Komban and he suspected that the director has glorified one community and degraded the other.

Krishnasamy also said that the censor board should not allow the abusive dialogues in Komban as it is not suitable for public screening

Despite the censor issues, the makers have officially announced the release date as April 2 which is legally wrong and  sources say that Studio Green might approach revising committee to get U certificate.

'Komban' mired in controversies!

Karthi’s Komban which has been mired in controversies has finally got a UA certificate from the censors. For the last one week the film has not been issued certificate as Puthiya Tamilagam  Dr. Krishnasamy MLA has been insisting that the film should be banned.

Dr Krishnasamy has alleged that the film “will create communal tension in southern Tamil Nadu, as the film highlights a particular caste and run downs another caste.” In a statement Dr.Krishnasamy said that the film “should be banned like Dam 999 in Tamil Nadu.”

Tamil activist Seeman has issued a strong statement supporting Karthi's Komban and condemned Puthiya Tamilagam party's Krishnasamy for using cinema for his own political ambition.

Seeman said " I'm ready to watch Komban along with Krishnasamy and if the film really degraded the scheduled community, I will join him in the protest but asking to ban on a movie before the release is unethical".

Seeman asked in his statement: "The literal meaning of Komban is big shot or someone who is on top, even the elephant's name in Kumki (2012 film) is Komban, does it mean that the elephant belongs to Thevar community?"

Seeman also condemned Krishnasamy for targeting big star movies to gain publicity. " Years ago Krishnasamy condemned Kamal Haasan's Sandiyar and the legendary actor changed the title as Virumandi but recently a small time actor's film got released with the same name (Sandiiyar) but to everyone's surprise there was no protest from Krishnasamy.”

Meanwhile a Madurai court asked the producers of the film to arrange a special screening of Komban to Dr.Krishnaswamy. The film is now gearing up for a big release on April 2. At the same time it is said CBFC is  yet to issue censor certificate to #Komban. A 10-member expert committee appointed by Madras HC will watch the movie tommorrow (March 31).

Komban Movie Review

First thing first, Karthi's Komban doesn't glorify or degrade particular caste; instead the film is a routine mass masala entertainer with all the necessary commercial trappings and cliches which are considered to be the favorite of the masses (or B & c centres?)

Kombaya Pandian (Karthi) is a butcher by profession and he leads his life by virtues which is a kind of relief for us because after a long time we are shown a hero who doesn't booze, smoke and most importantly he doesn't sing  songs in bar or degrade the heroine. If anyone ill-treats women or cheats in business, Komban would certainly whack them for which he is celebrated by the Arasanadu village people.

At one point of time, Komban falls in love with Palani (Lakshmi Menon ) and her father Muthiah (Rajkiran) too agrees for the marriage. But somehow our hero does not like Muthaih. There is also another parallel track where the villains badly want to murder both Rajkiran and Karthi which comes as the major play in the second half of the movie which leads to a weak climax that looks more like a staged drama.

What really works in Komban is the milieu and the  customs and rituals followed in Ramanathapuram area of south Tamilnadu and the characterization of Karthi, Rajkiran and Kovai Sarala. The way Muthiah  character is portrayed and his interactions with Karthi are realistic. But there is hardly any chemistry between the lead pair.

On the downside, there are too many cliches with the characterizations of the villain gang spearheaded by Gundan Ramasamy (Super Subbarayan) and there is not even a single scene where the baddie beats our hero, every given time Komban turns victorious which in turn makes it a boring play. Similarly, the second half of the film is filled with predicatable twists.

Performance wise, Karthi is good and he carries the film on his shoulders. His sharp look and well toned physique add more punch to his character. Rajkiran seem to be the right choice in such roles, while Lakshmi Menon sleep-walks as though she is bored (like the audiences)  playing the same role she has done in half a dozen films. Kovai Sarala and Thambi Ramaiah come in handy to accelerate the film's pace with their funny one liners.

Velraj's cinematography has shown the rusty Ramanathapuram locales in different color tone and  GV Prakash's music and BGM are noteworthy with the Karupu Nirathalagi  being the pick of the lot. Sharp cuts of Praveen KL has helped the movie to maintain the pace.

Overall, Komban is a poor cousin of Paruthiveeran,  another rural mass entertainer with necessary ingredients to satisfy the masses.

Gnanavelraja clarifies on 'Komban', as it gets U/A

Studio Green's Karthi starrer Komban has got U/A certificate from the censor board. As the movie has been mired with controversies, Komban's producer Gnanevelraja has come with a clarification statement.

Gnanavelraja says: "With many quality films to its credit, Studio Green is having good reputation among movie goers in Tamil Nadu but we are anguished by the controversies surrounding around our new film Komban which is slated for release on April 2".

The producer stresses: "Komban is not having any scenes or dialogues which glorify or degrade any community and we firmly say that the film depicts the ego clash between a man and his father-in-law".

He also said that there have been too many rumours regarding the movie and says it is just another commercial entertainer. Added Gnanavel: “Once the film gets released people will know that these are baseless rumors. Some people are trying to make mountains out of molehills.”

Meanwhile, the Madras High Court Bench constituted a 10-member committee headed by two retired judges of the court to watch the film in a private screening in Chennai on Tuesday and submit a report to the court on the claim that the movie had the potential to instigate caste clashes in southern districts.

Justices S. Tamilvanan and V.S. Ravi ordered that the committee’s report should be faxed by Tuesday evening since the court had to decide the issue expeditiously as the film is scheduled for release for Thursday. Apart from the two former judges, K. Ravirajapandian and A.C. Arumugaperumal Adityan, the committee would comprise the petitioner and three of his lawyers besides the film producer and three of his advocates.

'Komban' to release on April 1!

If the information from the inside sources are true, Komban will be releasing tomorrow and not on April 2 as reported.

Theaters like Kamala and Albert have opened bookings for Komban on April 1 and this brave decision by the producers has grabbed everyone's attention.

This is considered to be a strong move by Studio Green as they have expressed their opposition against the political parties which tried to sabotage their film. When asked official sources from Studio Green refused to comment and they will make the official announcement only after 5 PM. press meet.

I strongly condemn people who drag my name in Komban issue: Udhayanidhi

By this time, everyone would have known the news that Komban was mired in controversy as Krishnasamy alleged that the film has glorified one caste and degraded the other.
In yesterday's media interaction, Komban's producer Gnanavelraja said that the release date April 2 seems to the problem for Krishnasamy and other political outfits, this in turn stirred rumors that Udhayanidhi Stalin is behind the delay of Komban as his Nanbenda is also releasing on April 2.
Now in a video interview, Udhayanidhi has condemned people who are dragging his name on Komban delay. Udhay said, "While making films to glorify one particular caste, directors are degrading the other community which has caused many problems in the past. Kamal sir has faced similar issues in Thevar Magan and Virumandi, even Vijay's Thalaivaa has also faced the ban ".
The actor also said that Krishnasamy has wrote a letter against Komban on March 3  to the censor board officials and not after he got to know that the film is releasing on April 2 hence people should not drag his name into this issue. Further, Udhay also said that he has signed agreement with nearly 275 theaters for Nanbenda and Komban's delay or advancement is not going to do any good for him.
Udhay feels that people are using his name in Komban issue for mere publicity.
