Rummy Movie Review

Director: K. Balakrishnan
Cast: Vijay Sethupathi, Inigo Prabhakaran, Gayathrie
Music: D. Imman

Rummy is set in 1987 in rural Tamil Nadu. It's a romantic story told in the background of a small town college campus background. As with village subjects nowadays, it has some level of violence.

The movie starts as an assorted group of students join a Government College.

Sakthi (Inigo Prabhakaran) and Joseph (Vijay Sethupathy) become class mates and roommates in the hostel. Meenakshi (Gayathrie) and Soori join them in the college as well. A romance develops between Inigo Prabhakaran and Gayathrie. Vijay Sethupathy has a separate romantic track with Aishwarya.

The first half goes well with a good amount of humour from Soori. It has two nice songs. The movie takes a serious turn in the second half as parents of the girls find out about the romance. The movie ends with a stunning climax with a twist.

Vijay Sethupathy plays the role of a friend to the main lead Inigo Prabhakaran, but he still has a substantial role. The role doesn't demand too much from Vijay Sethupathy but he has performed well as always. Inigo Prabhakaran has done a decent job. But he is yet to develop the screen presence that is required for a main lead role.

Gayathrie as Meenakshi fits the village girl role well. She has two songs. Aishwarya has to do lot of heavy duty acting in the climax. She has done a reasonably good job. Soori offers comic relief in the movie. He has only few scenes in the movie. The supporting cast has done a good job.

If there is one person who stands tall in Rummy, it is the music director D. Imman. His songs such as Kooda Mela... Kooda Vaichu... and a few others are already hits with outstanding BGMs elevating. K. Balakrishnan makes a decent debut with Rummy, but it is predictable and at times the pace sags. As usual first half is decent, while the story loses its steam post-interval.

Rummy Movie Preview

Rummy? The popular card game indeed! What has Vijay Sethupathy have to do with it? Well need to wait another day to find out. Set in the 80′s era the story brings together a blend of so many elements like Friendship, Romance, and thrills as we hear from the director Balakrishnan.

Apparently Vijay Sethupathy was pretty impressed by the narration that he agreed to do it quite instantly. Balakrishnan promises a load of surprises in store for the viewers as the screenplay will play the key, with the narration itself going in backwards for a few sequences, so appealing indeed!

Vijay Sethupathy is back again after his standup performance in IAB, it will be interesting to see how the actor steps into this movie, as with every flick he is seen adopting versatile characters. Along with him is Iniko Prabhakar, Soori and Gayathri in the cast as well. The movie as we are aware is set in the backdrop of 1980′s so technical team has sprinted up a theme to suit the golden age with Imman’s mesmerizing music and much more to add.

The movie will also have education as one of its mainstay plot, set in Sivagangai where the consequences of quite a number of students and their action is said to be a strong hold of the design. The camera is being cranked by Premkumar of Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kanam with Mona penning the dialogues.

The watch outs of the movie are primarily Vijay Sethupathy and the screenplay, for the director has promised these elements to make the audience glued to their seats!

Rummy Music Review

Rummy features Vijay Sethupathy and Iniko Prabhakar in the lead cast with Aishwarya and Gayathri joining them. It marks Balakrishnan’s debut and the movie thrives on its title, the card game. Imman has come up with a melodious album without any qualms. A closer look at the songs in the movie

1. Koodmela

Singers : V.V.Prassanna, Vandana Srinivasan

The droplet of strings and hollow female vocals is the highlight of this romantic number. Cupid has struck at the right levels in this beautiful number and the signature background effect is sweet. Vandana’s crisp vocals breezes through the interludes, the effect is charming. The entire feel of the song gives us a whirlwind of the 90′s as the catch is not new.

2. Koodmela instrumental

The striking feature about this instrumental version of Koodamela is the exclusive usage of strings; it’s balanced and gives a feel of perfect BGM. The purpose of a romantic segment is served here and should be used for a sweet visual.

3. Adiyae

Singers : Abhay Jodhpurkar, Poornima Sathish

Imman starts off with “Ethanai Koodi” from Keeravani ragam a sensational effect and then weaves off a striking melody that will charm your ears for quite some time. This is the pick of the lot, where Yugabharathi has penned a perfect poem for love. Poornima’s classical chant is like a phenomenal silhouette through the raga. Abhay looks as the perfect man for the job, even though there is no wow about this song, the folk bit between the interludes rejuvenates the effect again.

4. Oru Nodi

Singers : D Imman, Divya Ramani

Divya springs through this Imman sensation, a melody with a lot to cherish. The shenhai bits springs surprises whilst Imman has lent his vocals in a relishable way as well. Yet another duet on celebration of love and the beautiful time that love takes you around the journey of life. An ordinary effect but the low feeling gives it a click. Yet again a song that gives 90′s effect.

5. Yethukkaga

Singers : Pooja AV, Santhosh Hariharan

Imman is his best when it comes to strings and this maestro kind of song is a clear winner right from the orchestration to the vocals. The start might make you assume this number to be a full and foremost string sensation, but then Imman takes you across a recursive tabla and faint Guitar rhythm. The captivating part of the melody is the striking resemblance to Raja’s 80′s melody’s that do not depend on the music alone, but synchronizes the singer’s attitude as well.

6. Yethukkaga

Singer : Karthick Iyer

The instrumental version is a solace rendering number, the one’s that might relax you on a long outward journey. Karthik’s tremendous performance deserves applause for his work, and so does the composer’s rendering music. The original part is superimposed with a female faint bit and the sax’s come along at the right time.

Rummy gets trimmed

Rummy starring Vijay Sethupathy, Inico Prabhakaran, Gayathrie and Ishwarya was released on Friday Jan 31st.

There were some negative feedback that the movie was slow and long. The team behind Rummy got into immediate action and edited 15 minutes from the movie including one song `Yethukkaga Ennai...`.

It has become a trend in Kollywood in recent times to trim movies post release. Karthi`s Azhagu Raja was trimmed after the release during Diwali. Vijay`s Jilla was trimmed after the release during Pongal.

May be its time for Kollywood producers and directors to go for Test Audience screening like in Hollywood to avoid these post release edits and trims.
