Overview of Popeye

Do you remember the funny cartoon character called Popeye and his girlfriend Olive Oyl and the villain of the story Bluto, the terrific love triangle? Bluto always try to impress olive and troubles Popeye a lot. Popeye always caught into the trap made by Bluto and Popeye finds himself in a drastic situation from where escaping is like impossible and suddenly a can full of spinach falls from Popeye’s pocket, he gulped it and got the supernatural power to fight with all difficulties. Somehow this is all about the stories of the Popeye the sailor man’s tale. In different episode the environment changes but the spinach can and Popeye’s invariable attacking approach to Bluto remains the same. I know now you can easily figure out the famous fictional character of Popeye.

Elzie Crislar Segar created the character of Popeye. The Popeye character first featured in the daily King Features comic strip Thimble Theatre on January 17th 1929. In 1933, Max and Dave Fleischer studios took the Thimble theatre characters. Popeye made his first film in Popeye the sailor, on 1933. First time Popeye’s music was composed. Sammy Lerner wrote the famous song “I’m Popeye the Sailor Man. I am what I Yam. This song became very popular among listeners because of its simplicity. Beginning of the first few cartoons, the movie’s music consists of an instrumental of “The sailor’s Hornpipe”. After that vocal variation “Strike up the Band (here comes a sailor),” replaced the phrase “for Popeye the sailor”. Last of all “I yam what I yam” tune was also used as the theme song.

The original Popeye character was voiced by William “Billy” Costello, also known as “Red Pepper Sam”. By the blessing of the animation series Popeye’s stories became very famous even more than the comic stories. One survey reveals that in 1930 the Popeye’s character was more popular than Mickey Mouse and 1938 s polls told that Popeye was the most popular Hollywood cartoon character.

Popeye’s character not only famous among the children but also eighties also. The funny combination between Popeye and his girlfriend olive always attracts the cartoon lovers. Especially children like Popeye’s funny way of eating spinach, singing the song “I’m Popeye the Sailor Man. I am what I Yam.” The Popeye character was depicted in the story as it can fight with any difficult problems; it has strong sense of investigation, gigantic power after eating the spinach and also dies hard romantic who listen every word of his girlfriend. No one can rebuke or scold Popeye except his girlfriend olive.

After Segar’s death in 1938, many other artists are appointed to draw the strip. Later Tom Sims continued writing Thimble Theatre’s strips. Bela Zaboly efficiently controlled the artwork during Sim’s time. After Sim Segendorf wrote and drew the daily strip until 1986 and continued it until 1994. From 1986 to 1992, the daily strip was written and drawn by Bobby London. On January 1, 2009 since after the death of Segar, the Popeye character carbonized in different countries, but the real copyright is reserved to United States because Segar was an employee of King Features Syndicate.

Popeye Comic Strip

Popeye is the most popular cartoon character from last couple of decades. Firstly in comic strips, then on television, as an animated cartoon show, as well as in movies. This amazing fictional cartoon series and its other character gained lots of love from the public. Fictional characters of this comic strip such as Popeye the sailorman, his girl friend Olive and her family, Bluto, Olive’s cousin Sweet Pea, of course, who can forget “the Spinach” that brought awesome super-natural powers to Popeye, and all the sailors of Popeye’s family; all these cartoon characters have been serving some unique and amazing entertainment to children as well as people of all age groups from over the years.

Popeye the sailorman is the actual fiction of a great cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar, who makes Popeye’s first appearance on 17th January of year 1929. Mr. Segar introduced Popeye and his Spinach in the comic strip named “Thimble theatre”. This column was published daily in the “King Features” that was owned by “the Heart Corporation” and well known for distributing comic strips and editorial cartoons to newspapers and magazines of all over the world. Later he introduced several other characters of this fictional cartoon series like Sweet Pea, Olive, and Blunto etc.

That was the tenth year of Thimble Theatre when Segar brought Popeye the sailorman and his associated cartoon characters into existence through a comic strip. In 1930′s king features thoroughly focused over this project and after few years “Popeye” became a title of its own comic strip. After the death of Mr. Segar in 1938, the Thimble theatre continued this amazing comic strip with new artists and writers who brought lots of fun in the series of Popeye the sailorman. These changes of cartoonists prove revolutionary for the corporation as the comic strip gained a lot of popularity due to some amazing stories and cartooning-art.

The Popeye comic strip started its journey from a newspaper named “New York Journal”, which was operated by King Features Syndicate. Well’ the initial journey of Popeye that sailor man was quite interesting, because this character was introduced by Segar in a minor role. The comedy cum adventure comic strip was actually started as a story of Olive Oyl and Harold Hamgravy- her boyfriend, which also featured Castor Oyl- the enterprising brother of Olive. Some frequent appearances were also made by Olive’s parents Nana and Cole oil. As Popeye became more famous and loved by reader than other characters, the comic strip started to focus over him; thus, he got the lead role in it.

Major characters of Popeye comic strip, Bluto and Sweet pea, made their first appearance into this strip in year 1932 and 1933 respectively. Bluto or Brutus was planned as one-time character named Bluto the terrible by Segar, but Fleischer Studios liked his role, and adapted him as a villain in their animated cartoon shows. The concept of Sweet pea was received by Segar in a mail that he introduced as a foundling baby later. Later comic strip included so many elements and characters, which have been entertaining people around the globe from last eight decades, and so on.

Popeye The Cartoon

A period of eight decades, and just one comic series, this really is a big achievement for Popeye the cartoon. Generations have gone by, but this cartoon show has never stopped entertaining people. Popeye the sailorman, Sweet pea, Olive, and Bluto are the all time favorite characters, which brought some kind of magic over the television screen as well as on 70MM screen. Popeye was created by E.C. Segar as his fiction for a comic strip named Thimble Theatre, which was associated with King Features Syndicate and published on New York Journal.

Fleischer Studio showed its interest for launching an animated cartoon series on television in the year 1932. They did an agreement with King Features in the month of November of that year. According to this agreement, the Fleischer Studio had the right to use all fictional characters of Thimble Theatre in its animated cartoon TV-show. Thus, how the era of this amazing cartoon series started in year 1933. The production house “Paramount Pictures” released this cartoon series on TV which was its main series of this production house over the next 25 years. As the animated Popeye dominated the TV world and turned out to be a sensation over the other animated cartoon series on television, it reflected the Popeye comic strip’s popularity, as well. There was a poll organized for Hollywood’s most popular animated character in 1938, and Popeye the sailorman topped the charts.

In each episode of Popeye, he or Olive was put into a situation that appeared to be almost hopeless then eventually he got Spinach from somewhere that brought him some incredible power.By virtue of this power, he becomes a super-human and gets himself or Olive out of that situation through an amazing way. This was all about a general overview of every episode of Popeye the sailorman, but the remarkable thing about this cartoon series is that it always comes with some different stories and fun with its other characters.

Paramount pictures and Fleischer Studios got separated by the mid of 1941, so the reorganized studio was renamed as Famous Studios. Till 1957, they short 125 episodes of the Popeye series, in which the remarkable ones were those made after Second World War. The cartoon characters were also got featured in the war theme, in these episodes; he was fighting against other rival countries.

In the year 1985 at South Korea, the Popeye’s black & white cartoon shows were retraced into color, but those shorts were available only in early years of the last decade of 20th century. In the year 2001, the historical personality of animation- Mr. Jerry Beck, brought Popeye to the “Cartoon Network“- a famous cartoon channel. In his extraordinary supervision a new animation series “the Popeye show” starts spreading magic over the TV screens again. Warner home videos also made an announcement in the year 2006, to release all theatrical production released from 1933 to 1957 of Popeye cartoon, in colored version.

The best thing about Popeye the sailor man cartoon series is this no matter the owners or production houses keep on changing over these 8 decades, but the characters like Olive, Sweet pea, Bluto remained favorites among the people.

POPEYE-THE SAILOR MAN

Among all the famous & beloved cartoon characters, Popeye can be named among the top standards. Since the day of very creation, this pipe-puffing sailor has become a global name. This cartoon character has encouraged millions of young hearts to eat spinach eagerly in order to achieve the incredible strength like Popeye. The confusion about spinach was created right from the beginning. Is the Spinach a particular type of magical herb which gives unlimited strength? Or the cartoon-lover children all over the world are actually worshipping a hero who is addicted to marijuana, a forbidden weed? However, there are only circumstantial evidences. But if all of those are added together, a clear indication can be achieved which tells that the strength-giving Spinach is nothing but a metaphor of the famous forbidden weed – marijuana!!

Popeye was first created by famous cartoonist Elzie Segar in the year 1929 and after then many artists and writers helped to curve this famous cartoon character. Popeye was not the central character right from the birth; rather he was first evolved as a small character in the comic strip ‘Thimble Theatre’. This comic strip describes the adventurous journeys of Olive Oyl, Castor & Ham Gravy. In a particular overseas voyage, there was the entry of Popeye who was hired as a sailor. Very soon Popeye collected importance in this comic strip. Within a year, Popeye became the new sweetheart of Olive Oyl replacing Ham Gravy. The comic no longer remained ‘Thimble Theatre’, rather became the comic of Popeye, the sailor man. This comic included Wimpy three years later and also the sweet pea baby a few years after that. At the beginning, the infinite strength of Popeye did not include any explanation. But later, on the basis of some ongoing jokes, the spinach was made the source of this energy.

Popeye did not refrain himself in the boundary of the comic books. Gradually this sailor character gathered much attention and popularity in the animated cartoon shows. After the death of Segar, Spinach became indispensible part in every plots of the adventure of Popeye. With the consumption of Spinach, there happened a magical swift in the plot and the enemies of Popeye get destroyed by the infinitely powerful Popeye. The original comic by Segar was much more complex with a huge number of interesting characters and there were also different adult jokes. But in the later cartoon versions, Popeye’s adventures become short, much simple and also suitable for viewing by the children.

The identity of Spinach raised much controversy from the beginning of this comic. In the 1920′s & 30′s ‘Spinach’ was a common word for marijuana. Its best evidence was the famous ‘Spinach Song’ recorded by the popular jazz band Julia Lee & her boyfriends. There was also a rumor then that the intake of marijuana could make a person super powerful, even resistant from the bullets. This rumor could be a good reason for the evolution of Spinach. Whatever may be the source or identity, Spinach became a craze among all the cartoon-lover children in the world.

The Origin of Popeye

If you are a parent of a small kid crazy about Popeye, you probably know who is. There are millions of kids along with people from older generations who are loyal fans of this unsung hero who is celebrating his diamond jubilee this year. It goes to the credit of Elzie Crisler Segar who conceived of a comic strip where the central character was a short, balding, one eyed sailor having no teeth. He was Popeye, an ugly man with a golden heart and who always smoked pipe. It is hard to conceive of a man like Popeye to be accepted as a hero in today’s’ times. Popeye used to mutter to himself and was shown as a frustrated man though he was a man of great morality. Popeye the sailor man is the comic created by Segar that enjoys tremendous popularity even after 75 years of its launch in February 1929.

Every episode of the cartoon series ends with Popeye singing the famous song I’m Popeye the sailor man…….. Pom Pom. Thimble Theater is the actual name of the strip that was published in newspapers from 1919 onwards, and Popeye as the central character appeared only ten years later in 1929. It is a fact that is hard to believe, but not many are aware of this fact that Olive Oyl’s family was looking for a sailor and Popeye was hired because of his abilities. Popeye was a character so loved by the audiences that he became the central character leaving all previous ones behind. Olive soon became his girlfriend and Popeye is seen fighting with Bluto, another sailor, trying to impress Olive. Bluto is double the size of Popeye and beats Popeye easily. It is when Pope is seen losing the fight does he take out a can of spinach. As soon as he gulps down the content of the can, he gets instant strength and muscle power, using which he overcomes Bluto’s strength.

If Popeye is ugly as a hero, Olive is not far behind, flat as a paper and having a pickle shaped nose. She is a girl who is gullible and falls to the tricks and antics of Bluto and in every episode, Popeye has to save her from the clutches of Bluto. If Olive is Popeye’s love, the cartoon series also has a small baby called Sweat Pea whom people mistake as the child of Popeye and Olive.

Take a pause and think why we are talking so much about Popeye and the cartoon series Popeye the sailor man. Yes, you guessed it right. 2012 happens to be diamond jubilee year of Popeye and the event is being celebrated in different parts of the world to honor this unsung hero who makes use of, not any super power but the super food spinach to gain muscle power and strength. Honoring Popeye is equivalent to making people aware of benefits of spinach to make them take up eating spinach. Spinach contains all essential vitamins and minerals required by our bodies.

How Popeye and Olive Met

In the comic and cartoon world, this is certainly the year of Popeye the sailor man. Popeye is celebrating his diamond jubilee this year having been launched way back in 1929. Popeye is a short, balding, toothless sailor and a very unlikely hero if one looks at him from today’s perspective. But then, the heroine of the series, Olive, who is the girlfriend of Popeye is also very different as she is as thin as a paper card and much taller than Popeye. She is a fickle minded girl and often falls to the guiles of Bluto, another sailor who happens to an adversary of Popeye. It is left to Popeye’s super strength (after consuming a can of spinach) to rescue her from the clutches of Bluto. Though every time the film ends with when Popeye manages to beat Bluto, millions of fans around the world watch the film avidly to see Popeye sing a song at the end of the film.

However, not many know that the creator of the series, E. C. Segar, introduced Popeye into the series as a bit of a character in 1929 though the series was already running for the last 10 years with the focus on Oyl family with Olive and her brother Castor Oyl. Ham Gravy was the beau of Olive and two were looking for a sailor to crew a ship to rob a casino when they go up to Popeye asking if he was a sailor. Popeye replies saying Ja think I’m a cowboy. This is the first time Popeye and Olive meet. Segar did not intend to continue with Popeye longer, and when Popeye disappeared from the series later, angry readers wanted him back, he was loved so much. Slowly but surely, Popeye himself became the central character of the strip getting rid of most of the earlier characters. Rest is history as the story in every episode from this meeting onwards revolved around the antics and fight between Popeye and Bluto and the love story of Popeye and Olive.

Soon, the creator focused upon Popeye, Bluto, and Olive, and also added a few new characters such as Sweat Pea, the adopted son of Popeye, and Wellington Wimpy. Wimpy happens to be a lover of hamburgers and a strong friend of Popeye. Popeye soon made an appearance in movies when Popeye the sailor man was seen in theaters.

Popeye soon became Olive’s new boyfriend though Olive remained as fickle minded as ever and was seen getting impressed by the guiles of Bluto. Popeye was shown fighting with Bluto to save his girlfriend from his clutches.

The reason why there is so much talk about Popeye and other characters of the cartoon series is that the series is in its 75th year of launch and the event is being celebrated in different parts of the world with Popeye memorabilia being sold that includes soft toys and posters of this great unsung hero of our times. The real motive behind this effort is to popularize consumption of spinach in the country.

The Theme Song of Popeye

Among the most famous cartoon shows and characters we all know, Popeye is one of the most attractive and favored by the children as well as by adults. In cartoon shows of television, in various comic books, even in movies Popeye has appeared for several times and thus take a step towards our heart and memory. Now, Popeye is not only famous for its special quotes like – “I yam what I yam and that’s all what I yam”, but also for the theme song that had been created for Popeye. The theme song uses to describe the characters of Popeye in brief and thus makes his story more attractive and interesting to us. In fact, it also helps to build up the cartoon shows as well as the cartoon movies and live action movies of Popeye over the theme song. And for such a famous cartoon character like Popeye, it is really important to create a song that will attract people more towards it, and thus making it more popular. Basically, a theme song expresses all about the cartoon character, and thus it is really essential. For all these reasons, like many other famous cartoon characters, Popeye also have a theme song, which was created, written, composed as well as designed by Sammy Lerner back in the year 1933, the early ages of Popeye.

This theme song was designed for the Fleischer Studios first television cartoon shows on Popeye and after that the song has become an inseparable part of the cartoon character of Popeye.

A Sailor’s hornpipe is often used before playing the actual music of the theme song to create an environment likely to be present for the actual song. The theme song was named as “I’m Popeye, the Sailor Man” and is still known as that. The siren sound of the song is one of the major attractions which is created through the pipe of Popeye and makes the tune funny and more laughing for the children. There are some doubts about the originality of the song as some of the historian and analysts say that the tunes of the song may be slightly adapted from some songs of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta, named the Pirates of Penzance. However, there is a significant doubt in this topic, and thus this has not yet been decided that whether the Popeye theme song is completely original or, not.

The cover of the theme song was being performed by an American Pop band, named Face to Face, and the song was included in the tribute album, produced by Ralph Sall and the album is named Saturday Morning: Cartoons’ Greatest Hits. This album is produced for MCA Records and the Popeye theme song cover was included in it in the year 1995. This proves the vast popularity of Popeye as well as his theme song. It has become a symbol of Popeye these days, and now the song pulls up more crowds towards the shows of Popeye. So, one can easily tell that the creation of the theme song of Popeye is really a very important step towards its glory.

Why is Popeye a Sailor

Millions of people around the world are big fans of Popeye the sailor man, a cartoon series being telecast on TV in all parts of the world. As the name of the series indicates, Popeye is a sailor which is not very surprising as the character was conceived by the creator of the cartoon series way back in 1929 when sailor and seas held great importance in the world. However, the reason why Popeye, the central character of the series that started 10 years back and concentrated upon Olive Oyl and her family, has been shown a sailor is because Olive Oyl and her beau required crew for a ship they had taken on rent for a special purpose, and met Popeye and hired him as a sailor for the ship.

Popeye seems to be the most unlikely hero in a cartoon series especially when other characters seem to be smart and attractive with some even possessing super powers. He is short, balding, one eyed, toothless, illiterate sailor who is always muttering something to himself and is frustrated with life in general. However, he has a heart of gold and no questions can be raised about his morality. But no less unlike a heroine is Olive, his girlfriend who is thin as a board, taller than Popeye, and a gullible girl who falls to the guiles of Bluto, adversary of Popeye. Bluto is taller and stronger than Popeye and impresses Olive with his muscle power. Popeye, when he feels he cannot overcome the brute strength of Bluto, takes out a can of spinach and gulps down all its contents. He instantly gains super strength and muscle power to beat Bluto and save his girlfriend Olive.

The creator of the series, E. C. Segar chose spinach as the source of power for his hero as spinach was talked about a lot in those days as a rich source of iron. However, Segar used spinach as a weapon for Popeye as he believed it to be an abundant source of vitamin A, or beta carotene, as it is scientifically known. Beta carotene is known to provide instant strength and muscle power. So as soon as Popeye empties a can of spinach, he develops strength to beat Bluto, a man double his size. There is a cute looking baby called Sweat Pea in the series who many believe to be Popeye’s and Olive’s kid which is wrong as he is a kid Popeye found on his door step as an orphan.

But why so much talk about Popeye, his antecedents, and all other characters in the comic series? This is because 2012 is the diamond jubilee year of the series introduced by E. C. Segar in 1929 and the world is celebrating the 75th anniversary of this unsung hero. There is another motive and that is to popularize purchase and consumption of spinach, which is considered to very beneficial for human strength. This is why Popeye memorabilia is being sold in different parts of the world.

Who are Popeye Characters

Those who just love to watch the antics of Popeye and his constant tussle with Bluto, can easily count all the characters of the cartoon film on fingers. The third central character of the comic strip is of course Olive Oyl, the tall and super thin girl friend of Popeye the sailor man. She plays the role of a girl who is not sure about things in life and so she vacillates between Popeye and Bluto as Bluto seems to be stronger than Popeye. Taking help of spinach to overcome the might of Bluto who is bigger and stronger, Popeye finally beats Bluto and the episode ends with Popeye singing his trademark song, Popeye the sailor man.

There are some more characters in the cartoon film series that come and go and they are not that significant from the point of view of the main story of the film. Popeye found a small baby outside his doorstep and adopted him. The name of the baby is Sweat Pea and he amazingly resembles Popeye. Popeye also has four nephews that are named Poopeye, Pupeye, Peepeye, and Pipeye. Wimpy is the name of the close friend of Popeye who is seen asking for a hamburger all the time.

But this is information that is readily available on the net or one can get as soon as he watches a few episodes of the cartoon movie series. What is the need for asking the names of Popeye characters today after so many years? I will let you an inside secret. This is the diamond jubilee year of the launch of Popeye the sailor man and being celebrated in different parts of the world where Popeye memorabilia, toys and merchandise will be sold to people in a bid to honor an unsung hero who is not a super hero neither does make use of any hard weapons to gain muscle strength and power. In fact, his only weapon is cans of spinach that he gulps down every time he finds that the task on hand is difficult and beyond his means. This is what makes him so very special, and today this universal hero is being used to make people remember that Mother Nature has provided us with super foods like spinach to remain fit and healthy. These are times when people in the country are struggling to remain fit, being obese and complaining of ailments. By including spinach in our diet, which is a wonder food easily available in all parts of the world, and that too cheaply, we can ensure that we provide all necessary nutrients to our bodies and remain stress free.

Whenever one thinks of spinach, he is forced to think of Popeye, such is the strong association of the two. Promoting vegetarianism, especially eating spinach is the main motive behind this campaign of selling Popeye goods. People are taking part in this campaign with zeal and it is hoped that this exercise will increase spinach consumption around the world.

Who is Bluto?

Bluto is one of the leading characters of the famous comic series, Popeye the sailorman, created by Elzie Crisler Segar. Segar introduced this character in 1932; after three years of the introduction of Popeye, the sailorman into the series. The entire comic strip is an eventual fiction which had been continuously published by various authors and artists of the king features; even after the death of Segar. The cartoon series was earlier named as Thimble Theatre, which was later renamed as ‘Popeye’.

Bluto is also called Brutus, is the competitor of the sailorman. He wants to impress, olive oyl; the girlfriend of the leading character of the cartoon film. This character is portrayed by Paul L. Smith in live action film while Alec Baldwin portrayed it in the animated series. It is the funniest character of the whole imaginary story, which often plans to defeat its opponent anyway. It is even not exactly cleared by the cartoon film that who is stronger; Popeye the sailorman or Brutus. Many a time, Brutus has been shown to kidnap Olive for catching her attention, but Popeye rescues her from his trap every time with the help of his power.

Popeye is imaged as a powerful sailorman who restore its energy by consuming spinach frequently. Bluto is represented with the muscular body and strong appearance. Sometimes, he becomes capable of beating the leading sailorman; surprisingly. His voice is very loud, harsh with some bear like growling sound while talking. He is severely attracted to the girlfriend of his enemy and wishes to win her love by knocking down his lover.

Popeye, the sailorman is very intelligent who works on practical and eventually useful plans. On the other hand, Brutus is a foolish fellow to work without any planning. His thoughtlessness is one of the most comedian features of him. He has been even knocked down by sweet pea, the foundling of the sailorman. Many a time, he seems to be stronger than the sailorman; even if he eats spinach. While, on other occasions; he tends to match the sailorman equally in power. Popeye becomes helpless to beat him either his wittiness or strength. Thus, all these different situations leave a consistency behind about the more powerful guy among both the sailors. The whole story moves around this scenario of Brutus, Olive and Popeye the sailorman.

Moreover, the fun in to the story is incorporated by the funny representation of flop planning of Bluto regarding the will of knocking down the sailorman. In addition, his foolish intension of kidnapping the girl friend of the sailorman also shows funny comedy for the viewers. Sometimes, he plans to steal the can of spinach of the sailorman so that he cannot gain more power by consuming it. This makes the sailorman appear weaker before Brutus, in some episodes of the fictional cartoon series. Many a times, sweet pea creates interruption in the wicked intention of brutus. The scenario of the stronger sailor has never been cleared in the live movie by its creators. The reason behind this fact is to secure the interest of viewers to discover the latest situation in each show. Sweet pea is a baby character of this animated fiction, which has been represented as the beloved guy of the sailorman.

Who is Bluto in Popeye?

This is a question people living in a remote corner of the world can ask what with the comic strip of Popeye the sailor man and its animated avatar being telecast in all parts of the world for the last so many decades. For the benefit of all those who are really unaware of the central character Bluto of this film, he is the villain of the series who is all the time posing trouble for the hero Popeye and trying to impress his girlfriend Olive. Bluto is a sailor just like Popeye and perhaps stronger and bigger than our poor hero who is short, ugly, and always smoking cigar. But hero has to win and this the creator has ensured by giving him super strength and muscle power through spinach, which is a wonder food used by people all over the world. As Bluto is stronger than Popeye and he cannot beat him in a one to one fight, Popeye has to gulp a can of spinach every time he feels he is losing the battle against the villain. The small baby shown in the series sometimes is not Popeye’s baby. His name is sweat pea and belongs to some relative of the sailor.

Popeye vs. Bluto: the Fights Where We Knew the End

Those of us who have grown up watching Popeye the sailor man know how exciting it was to see a lean and thin Popeye take on his adversary and competitor Bluto to woo Olive, the tall girl who eventually fell for the charms and power of Popeye. The secret behind the muscle power and strength of Popeye was ascribed to abundance of beta carotene in spinach, or so the creator of the comic strip believed when the series was introduced way back in 1929.

Spinach is Nature’s gift to mankind and it is difficult to find another so easily available food source that can classify as a super food in this age of pollution and adulteration. The dark green leafy plant contains abundance of iron and beta carotene to make us strong and powerful. However, it is also a treasure house of all essential nutrients like minerals and vitamins. Yes, it is low on calorie count, but if one compares this amazing food source, he finds that there is none to beat spinach in terms of variety and quantity of nutrients per calorie. The long list of nutrients just goes on and on. Magnesium, potassium, selenium, calcium, you name it, spinach has it. It is not just minerals but all necessary vitamins like vitamin K, Vitamin A, vitamin B, folate, vitamin B6, iron, vitamin E, zinc, copper, fibers, niacin. Even omega fatty acids, considered essential for human beings, are found in rich quantities in spinach.

Coming back to the tile Popeye vs. Bluto, all the earlier comics revolved around the same formula. Bluto harasses Olive; Popeye initially gets beaten, takes out a can of spinach and gulps it down to beat the shit out of Bluto and save his lady love Olive. The series always ended on a happy note with Popeye singing his famous song Popeye the sailor man. By the year 1956, everyone thought that the formula had paid up and the readership of the comic strip was finally going down. Paramount pictures, that had been making cartoon films with Popeye, sold out the copyrights to Associated Artists Productions who lost no time in making new series of films with Popeye. To the bewilderment of everyone, the TV ratings of the new series shot up the roof to become very popular not just among the kids but also a whole generation of adults having grown up watching the comic strip or the cartoon film later. If you have been a loyal Popeye fan, and not missed many episodes, you must have noticed a small baby making its appearance in the movies in between and looking like a small Popeye. The baby is not, as you must have thought, a baby of Popeye but a baby of one of his relatives, and endearingly called Sweat Pea.

Popeye vs. Bluto is a saga that continues till today after 75 years it first appeared as a comic strip. If anything, the significance of the Popeye movie has increased to make popular eating of spinach in all parts of the world.
