Kalyana Samayal Saadham directed by debutant RS Prasanna is a well-made adult romcom, that keeps you smiling. It is take on a big fat Brahmin wedding and its pitfalls and rituals is great fun.
The story is about a soft-ware engineer Raghu Viswanathan, (Prasanna) who gets engaged to another engineer, the fiercely independent Meera Viswanathan (Lekha Washington). It’s is going to be an arranged marriage and the extended families of both are looking forward to it.
Meanwhile Raghu and Meera come to know each other better and one night they end up in bed. However due to erectile dysfunction, Raghu can’t get it up and on the advice of his friends tries out various quacks treating impotency. At the same time things go wrong between both families over marriage issues.
Prasanna as Raghu a man who has to keep it up to save his engagement and at the same time keep his parents in good humour is simply terrific. The actor has done a role which no mainstream hero would dare to do.
Lekha Washington has done role of a modern girl with a traditional outlook is apt along with rest of the cast of seasoned veterans like Delhi Ganesh, Uma Padmanabhan, Kathady Ramamurthy and others.
R S Prasanna has done a neat job and handled an extremely sensitive issue of stress related temporary impotency in a very sensitive manner laced with humour. The director is also able to bring in the fun and blind belief in horoscopes, superstition and family issues of a typical Tamil Brahmin wedding. The music and background score by Arrora fits in with the mood of the film.
On the downside the first half has more humour while second half is like a serial with lot more melodrama. Even though the film is only 2 hours it drags a bit, especially post interval. It also looks like a low budget film and excessive voice over.
But overall it is a good fun movie with some smart generation next dialogues. It is a time –pass multiplex film. Enjoy the big fat Indian wedding.
