Vanmham Movie Review

Director: Jai Krishna
Cast: Vijay Sethupathi, Kreshna, Sunaina
Music: S. Thaman

Director Jai Krishna’s Vanmham is a clichéd long and boring movie. Vijay Sethupathi sleep walks through the film while Kreshna makes a sincere attempt to make it interesting. It is packaged for the mass B & C market, with all commercial ingredients.

The story set in a small town in southern Tamil Nadu, is on true friendship between Radha (Vijay Sethupathi) and Chelladurai (Kreshna). Their friendship transcends several emotions like love, camaraderie, sacrifice and half way point they fall out. Later due to ego issues and misunderstanding it becomes hatred, but finally they get back together and finish off the villain!

It is a story that has been told from time immemorial, and there is nothing fresh in presentation or treatment. And terrible screenplay aggravates the misery. The idea of Vijay Sethupathi atoning for his mistake and looking after the murdered man’s family is etched out of Lohitadas’s Mohanlal film Kanmadam. The commercial ingredients like songs and fights are not well woven into the narration. The love angle between Kreshna and Sunaina, is not convincing and there are too many logical loopholes in the story. The songs by Thaman are nothing much to talk about.

Vijay Sethupathi most of the time is bashing somebody or other and spots a dhoti and rides a Bullet motor bike to go with his rough and tough image. Kreshna is far more relaxed, Sunaina is there for some romance and songs. Supporting cast of actors are good, especially Goli Soda fame Madhusoodan Rao.

The only silver lining is the camerawork of Bala Bharani and never seen before Kanyakumari district locations, which fit in with the milieu. Suresh Urs could have speeded up the proceedings, as it is too long. One hopes Vijay Sethupathi would be careful on his script selection.

Vanmam Music Review

Cast:    Vijay Sethupathi, Kreshna, Sunaina, Madhu Sudhan Rao, Sriranjani
Direction:    Jai Krishna
Production:    Hitesh Jabak
Music:    S. Thaman

Thaman is more or less like an Indian batsman, who could do no wrong in his home and struggles in overseas condition. He is delivering blockbuster albums in Telugu while he is yet to breakthrough as a mainstream composer in Tamil. His last release ‘Meagamann’ is a cool album with just 3 songs and a theme track. He has dished out a similar stuff in Vanmam, and let’s see what he did.

1. Aeti Enga Pora
Singer(s): Nivas K Prasanna, M.M. Manasi

A typical Thaman’s composition well backed by  Nivas & Manasi. Thaman had made use of Manasi’s vocals in his last release ‘Meagamann’ for a couple of songs, and she’s been in no mood to let her form go. The alluring lyrics, add more beauty to this medium paced melody. The song got all the ability to become a favorite one among the music buffs for quite some time.

2. Padatta Padatta
Singer(s): Velmurugan, Hariharasudhan

After a stylish melody, the composer offers a soft ‘Kuthu’ where he gets Velmurugan & Hariharasudhan to give an intro to the lead heroes. The does not make the listener to go gaga about the tune, but the visuals might give more mileage to this tune.

3. Raasa Raasa
Singer(s): M.M. Monisha

Monisha powers this dance number which is a stock tune from the bag of, Thaman. We have heard similar stuffs from the composer in the past, but still he makes it a bit interesting with the help of Malathy’ish (Manmadarasa) vocals from Monisha.

4. Maname Maname
Singer(s): Suchith Suresan, A.V. Pooja

Easily the best track of the album & Thaman’s best in the recent times. Suchith & Pooja powerfully delivered the verses of, Yugabhrathi. The track is filled with lots of motivational verses & it sounds too good when, Pooja utters, ‘Karai sera odam neeyo..dhisai maari pogindraayo.. maname.’ Albeit, the theme resembles to Rahman’s, Santhosa Kannere from ‘Uyire’ the song does stand out effectively.
