Small movies that made big money at TN box-Office



The big star studded films may have grossed big at the Tamil Nadu box-office in 2014. But in reality they may have just been break even or in some cases incurred loss for the producer.

However, small films made on a budget of Rs 5 Crore (including cost of print and publicity) and below have made money for all right holders including their producers. Some of them became profitable from theatre collections alone. Remember these were big ROI (Return on Investment) winners.

Here lists six films which made big money for all concerned. It also proved that films with decent content made on a budget and marketed well can succeed big.

The films have been listed according to alphabetic order.

1. Goli Soda
Cast – Kishore, Sri Raam, Pandi, Chandini
Director – Vijay Milton
Producer – Thirrupathi Brothers & Roughnote Productions

What Worked – Freshness of the subject that revolved around four orphan boys working in Koyambedu market and their adventures along with newness in the cast and treatment.

Box-Office – Film is reported to have cost only Rs 2.50 Cr, but did four times its budget from theatricals alone. Added to that its dubbing, satellite and remake rights were sold at a high price. Recently Vijay Milton one of the producers said that it made Rs 14 Crore from theatricals and all other rights !

2. Manjapai
Cast – Vimal, Raj Kiran & Lakshmi Menon
Director – N Ragavan
Producer – Thirrupathy Brothers & Sarkunam Cinemaz

What worked – It was made for B & C audiences and marketed aggressively . The Raj Kiran –Vimal bonding helped to create the emotional factor.

Box-Office – Made for Rs 4.5 Crore, the film did business worth Rs 15 Crore. Plus remake and satellite rights, made it one of the most profitable ventures.

3. Naaiygal Jaagirathai
Cast – Sibi Sathyaraj and Arundathi
Director – Shakthi Soundar Rajan
Producer – Nathambal Film Factory

What worked -  Sibi’s interaction with the wonder dog Idoh

Box-Office - Made on a budget of Rs 3 Cr, the film will make around Rs 6 Cr from theatricals alone, plus another Rs 2.5Cr from satellite rights.

4. Pisaasu
Cast – Naga & Prayaga Martin
Director – Mysskin
Producer –  B-Studios

What worked – Mysskin’s fresh story and presentation and the friendly ghost that showed compassion.

Box-Office – Made on a shoe-string budget of Rs 2.5 Cr, the film will do Rs 3.5 Cr from theatricals alone (still running) and another Rs 2.5 Cr from satellite rights.

5. Salim
Cast – Vijay Antony, Aksha
Director – NV Nirmal Kumar
Producer – Vijay Antony Film Corporation

What worked – Vijay Antony’s image and story about a crusader who stands up against corruption in society was liked by the audiences along with music.

Box-Office – It was made for around Rs 4 Crore, worked wonders and TN theatricals alone was said to have touched Rs 8 Cr. Plus satellite rights went for an attractive price.

6. Yaamirukka Bayamey
Cast – Kreshna, Karunakaran, Rupa Manjari
Director – Deekay
Producer – RS Infotainment

What Worked – The comedy and horror mix was perfect and the film was racy. And audiences give a big thumbs up for horror-comedy genre in 2014.

Box-Office -  Film made on a budget of Rs 5 Cr, got nearly 8 Cr from TN theatricals alone. Plus it was sold at a high price for satellite and remake rights.
