Top 10 Creepiest Castles in the World
1. The Castle Keep, Newcastle
The Castle is medieval fortification, located in Newcastle upon Tyne. As a matter of fact the City of Newcastle was named after this remarkable structure. Initially the construction was created of motte-and-bailey design and later, in the 12th century it was replaced with a stone built structure. It is believed that both 8th century cemetery and a Roman settlement were disturbed during the construction of the castle. Nowadays, part of the Roman settlement still exists under its foundations. Everything from hospital, houses, shop and jail have stood within the walls of this peculiar castle. There are plenty of stories for ghosts and hauntings that make it even more appealing especially to the braver and more curious tourists.

2. Chillingham Castle, England
It is a castle, situated in the village of Chillingham in the northern part of Northumberland, England and is known as one of the most haunted places in the country. Initially the notorious Chillingham castle was a monastery. In the late 12th century, when England was ruled by King Edward I, it served mainly as a staging post for the army of England entering against Scotland, but was also frequently attacked by Scottish armies. As a result of its horrific history the castle has deserved its fearsome reputation. Noteworthy is a very small room with markings scratched into the mortar, called The Dungeon. This is the method which prisoners used for counting of how many days they have left to live. The multiple ghost stories that emanate from the history of the castle have been investigated on television and radio. The main ghost, spotted by people, seems to be the so-called Blue Boy, who inhabited the Pink Room and most visitors describe as a wailing sound followed by flashes of blue light.

3. Predjama Castle, Slovenia
Built in1274, by the Patriarch of Aquileia under a natural rocky arch high in the stone wall to make it difficult to access, the Predjama Castle is one of the most picturesque wonders of human history. It has perched proudly on a 123-metre cliff for more than 700 years, being this way the perfect hideout for the rebellious and courageous knight Erazem of Predjama, a "robber baron” who has been for decades now a subject of very beautiful and romantic legend. The legend says that in 15th century he escaped the revenge of the Holy Roman Emperor and along with his family found refuge in this castle. The Predjama Castle has been destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt again in 1567. Today it is a centre of attraction for many tourists with the numerous fascinating objects disposed there, including oil paintings, weapons and a Pietà dating from 1420.

4. Bodelwyddan Castle, Wales
In 1829 the owner of the Bodelwyddan castle, Sir John Hay Williams, employed the architects Joseph Hansom and Edward Welch to refurbish and extend it. Despite the fact that human bones were found around the chimneys, he ordered the restoration to carry on and so it was rebuilt around the creepy finding. Since then phantom soldiers have also been seen, whispering ghosts have been heard and shadowy figures have been observed. Having earned the fame of one of the most haunted castles in the world, the Bodelwyddan Castle is nowadays the most amazing Victorian Castle in Wales, with 260 acres of parkland, furnished rooms, and gardens. The Castle has also been used for the shooting of two episodes of television's Most Haunted and Sci Fi's Ghost Hunters International.

7. Dunluce Castle, Northern Ireland
Dramatically located on the edge of basalt outcropping and surrounded by jaw dropping coastal scenery, the Dunluce Castle is one of the most extensive ruins of a medieval castle in Northern Ireland. Located 100 feet above the ocean and isolated from the coast by a 20-foot chasm, the Dunluce Castle must have looked very formidable and awe-inspiring to its attackers. It is believed that the castle was built in 1200 and possibly rebuilt by Richard de Burgh during the Anglo Norman period in Ireland. There is an emblematic story reporting that in 1639 the kitchen of the construction collapsed into the sea and took several servants to their deaths. Today, visitors attest the existence of ghosts inside the Dunluce Castle by feeling cold chills in particular sections of the building. Employees at the gift shop also often report of radios turning themselves on or books being moved.

10. Glamis Castle, Scotland
The magnificent pile of Glamis Castle is still the home of the Earl and Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne, but it is now open to the public. Childhood home of the Queen Mother and birthplace of Princess Margaret, the castle is a spectacular example of the style named "Scottish baronial" and interesting amalgam of the French Renaissance chateau and the traditions of the Scottish tower house. It is said that King Malcolm II have been murdered there in the 11th century and the widow of the Earl of Glamis - Lady Janet Douglas was burned by James V in 1540 at the stake, as she was believed to be witch. Whether you want to explore closely the mysticism of the castle or to enjoy its remarkable architecture, this splendid building is definitely worth visiting.
