'Kaththi' takes a monster opening

Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s AR Murgadoss directed Kaththi has taken a monster opening at the India domestic box-office on Diwali day – Oct  22. In Tamil Nadu, the film has created history by collecting approximately Rs 12.5 Crore from 455 plus screens with multiple shows and tax free!

Ayngaran International whose name now appears as the producers (in TN & Pondy) of the film has Tweeted – “ We are extremely happy to announce that our movie has received the biggest opening for a Tamil movie”

The film has netted around Rs 1.65 Cr from Kerala and approximately Rs 1.55 Cr from Karnataka. It means a total net of around Rs 15.7 Crore from three southern states where it released. The Telugu version of Kaththi is releasing only next week in Andhra.

Kaththi opening clearly indicates that there is a huge market for Tamil biggies, and it is growing as the market expands. This has been achieved mainly due to carpet bombing with maximum screens in all the markets.

Bangalore had 65 screens on October 22 playing the Vijay starrer. In Thiruvananthapuram, Kaththi opened in six screens, something which no Malayalam film has done before. In Palakkad where it released in three screens, the film grossed Rs 6.35 lakhs on first day.

The deadly Thupakki combo of Vijay-AR Murgadoss also helped the film to take a super opening. The team coming together again and raging controversies surrounding the film helped it to make it a brand.

In Tamil Nadu the film has worked wonders due to the pre-release controversy and uncertainty regarding its release. This created an unprecedented hype around the film, with everybody keen to catch it first day first show. Early morning shows at unearthly 4.30 am went packed, and WOM also worked to films advantage.

Anirudh-On cloud nine after 'Kaththi' success!

Music  director Anirudh is the current sensation in Tamil cinema. Last year, his movies Ethir Neechal and Vanakkam Chennai had done well at the Box office.

This year, started with Sivakarthikeyan’s Maan Karate. While the critics might have given mixed reviews, the movie did well at the box office. That was followed by Dhanush’s VIP which turned out to be the year’s biggest blockbuster. Anirudh’s songs and BGM were mentioned as one of the reasons for the success.

And for Diwali, Kaththi was released, which is doing phenomenal business at the box office.

Anirudh’s BGM has already come in praise from several quarters.  Maan Karate, VIP and now Kaththi  turning out to be hits, Anirudh is on a roll. This is just the beginning of more successes to come for this young musical sensation.

The online booking started only after Tuesday noon however thousands of Vijay fans queued in theatres across Tamilnadu, right from Tuesday morning, to grab the first day first show tickets

Result, the film directed by A.R.Murugadoss has got an earth shattering opening. Not only at home but the film has done exceptionally well in oversees as well. ‘Kaththi’ has reportedly created a box officer record in US if we have to go by news revealed by Atmus Entertainement

The US premiere of the Vijay-Samantha starreer has been happened in  76 screens and the premiere itself has garnered a whopping revenue of $142,805 .
Atmus has also added that the record created by ‘Kaththi’ is the second Tamil film to garner more than $100,000 in the US premiere after Superstar Rajinikanth’s 2010 sci-fi entertainer ‘Enthiran’.

Meanwhile the film that has a strong subject deftly handled by Murugadoss has been garnering positive reviews from critics as well as fans who have watched the film Vijay’s dual role performance is also said to be one of the best in his career so far.

Asin’s word of support for ‘Kaththi’

She might have settled in Bollywood for now, but still a strong follower of Tamil movies. The actress has showered her support for Kaththi by asking viewers not to mix Politics with Movies. She has further mentioned that Politicians should not voice their problems against cinema and requested Vijay fans to make Kaththi a huge victory.
Asin was in trouble not long back for acting in a hindi film which had sequences shot in Sri Lanka. The actress claimed that she is now a Hindi Actress and need not be governed by rules set by Tamil Film association when she faced strong resistance from Tamil organizations. This is precisely a mild reason to believe that the actress though is facing a dry run in Bollywood has no offers from Tamil producers who feel the film would land in trouble if she is on board.

'Kaththi' breaks all existing BO records: ARM

AR Murgadoss is a happy man. His Vijay starrer Kaththi has taken a humongous opening worldwide. ARM himself Tweeted: “ Kaththi breaks all South film records on its first day -TOTAL –Rs 23.80 CR. TN/Kerala / Karnataka & NorthIndia-16.45Cr OVERSEAS-7.35CR.”

From Murgadoss’s Tweet it can be said that Kaththi has taken the highest day one collections for a Tamil film. The amount mentioned Rs 23.80Cr  worldwide is huge by any yardstick for a Tamil film.

Kaththi has opened up new vistas for Tamil films. A big Tamil film with a wide release has been able to create new or expanded existing markets. The Vijay film has also shown that if a film is marketed aggressively it can get a opening irrespective of its early WOM.

‘Kaththi’ is re-writing the box office records

Vijay’s ‘Kaththi’ is simply re-writing all the box office records. Yesterday, we reported that it has overtaken the highest grosser for any Tamil movie with 12.5 crores in the first day, and here we have one more today. The official ‘Kaththi’ handle across the social network & A.R. Murugadoss have confirmed that the movie has seen the biggest collection and breaks all South Indian film records by collecting 23.80 crores in the first day. A.R. Murugadoss himself has declared the report in his personal page by quoting – #Kaththi breaks all South film records on its first day -TOTAL -23.80 CR TN/Kerala / Karnataka & NorthIndia-16.45Cr OVERSEAS-7.35CR

In Tamilnadu, the ticket prices have not hit the skies, unlike the neighboring states. It has been the same for multiplexes for the last few years, and there are some reports where a new release costs close to 150-200 in the suburbs for the first weekend. So, the argument related to ticket price hike is the only reason for ‘Kaththi’s record breaking opening is dismissed, and ‘Kaththi’ has genuinely out scored the previous hits by some margin. It will be interesting to see whether ‘I’, ‘Lingaa’ & ‘Thala 55’ will push ‘Kaththi’ from the top.

'Kaththi' creates a new record in USA!

Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay’s Kaththi which opened with Tuesday evening premiere shows in US in a record 105 screens for a Tamil movie has created a new Box office record.

By Saturday, it has collected $ 511,252 at the US Box office. This is the highest for a non-Rajini, non-Kamal Tamil movie. This is also the first time a non-Rajini, non-Kamal movie breaching the coveted half a million mark.

Kochadaiiyaan with its $635,000 haul is the 2014’s highest Tamil grosser in US. Kaththi by Sunday or Monday is expected to overtake Kochadaiiyaan to become 2014’s highest Tamil grosser in US.

This will also put Kaththi in all-time Top 5 in US after Endhiran, Vishwaroopam, Sivaji and Dasavathram. Kaththi is sure setting the overseas box office on fire.

‘Kaththi’ Success Meet in Coimbatore

Despite running into neck deep trouble, ‘Kaththi’ valiantly fought back all problems and crossed hurdles to release on the day of festival of lights. The movie got a very elaborate number of screens abroad and also in states like Kerala and Karnataka, while all screens were choked with booked seats on the first day for all shows in Tamil Nadu. Director AR Murugadoss is especially happy with the unanimously lauded response from audience that gathered a whooping 23.8 crores of collection on the first of its release. And now there is news that post the busy weekend, the crew is meeting to celebrate their success.

The success meet for ‘Kaththi’ is expected to be held in Coimbatore today at Hindustan College and the event will have all the cast and crew taking part in raising a toast to their victory, including director himself and the lead actor Vijay. After quite a considerable gap in the entertainment arena, ‘Kaththi’ released as a pressing story to highlight the importance and plight of farmers today. The film had Vijay playing double role in the lead, Samantha as the heroine and Neil Nithin Mukesh playing the villain.

Will ‘Kaththi’ overtake ‘Kochadaiyaan’?

So far, the movies of Rajini & Kamal has crossed more than one million at the U.S.A box office and other heroes have not even crossed the 0.5 million mark. Now, Vijay’s ‘Kaththi’ which has already earned 0.6 million dollars and another 35k dollars will dethrone Rajini’s ‘Kochadaiyaan’ and find a place for itself in the top 5.

So far, the top 5 grossers are ‘Enthiran’, ‘Viswaroopam’, ‘Sivaji’, ‘Dasavatharam’, and ‘Kochadaiyaan’. The distributors in America are quite sure about ‘Kaththi’ breaking into top 5 in the next few days, and it would be interesting whether it will overtake ‘Dasavatharam’ and ‘Sivaji’ to place itself in the top 3.

Actor Vijay, director Murugadoss sued for defamation

Tamil actor Vijay, director A.R. Murugadoss and producers Lyca Production have been slapped with a defamation suit for making a reference to the 2G spectrum case in their recently released Tamil actioner "Kaththi".

The defamation case was filed here Tuesday in the magistrate's court.

According to complainant R. Ramasubramanian, a dialogue in the film suggested that corruption "had occurred" in the 2G spectrum case when the matter is still being heard in the court.

In "Kaththi", Vijay mouths a dialogue that goes: "We live in a country filled with people that have looted crores of rupees using 2G waves."

"How can a film conclude that all those involved in the 2G spectrum case are corrupt when the case is still being heard in court? This dialogue portrays all those people in poor light and damages their dignity," Ramasubramanian said.

The court granted permission to file the petition and adjourned the case till Nov 11.

"Kaththi", which released Oct 22, has turned out to be a blockbuster. It has raked in over Rs.50 crore in its opening week worldwide.
