All of us who have ever had contact with dogs know that their way of showing us affection is by licking us. However, this gesture has a much deeper meaning than what we thought. It seems that, using their tongue, they’re capable of detecting our mood.

The psychology department of the University of London discovered that dogs can respond to our emotions. They perceive whether we’re sad, happy, or worried. This is backed up by a study, in which they wanted to test the reactions of our furry friends when confronted with different emotions.

When people were happy, the dogs approached to play. However, when people were sad, the dogs approached to lick and caress the people’s faces. Therefore, a dog’s lick can be interpreted as showing us support and comfort.

The most important part of the study is that they were able to show that dogs feel empathy and are capable of identifying with our emotions. It’s fascinating what we learn about animals, and now we’re completely sure that dogs really are a man’s best friend.
