Jail Review
Star Cast : GV Prakash, Radikaa, Abarnathi, Nandan Ram, Pasanga Paandi
Director : Vasanthabalan
The only silver lining in Vasanthabalan’s Jail is GV prakash's life like performance as Karna, a vagabond from the slums. The subject is interesting of how the system is totally against the urban marginalised people. It follows the template of Madras and Vada Chennai but director Vasanthbalan seems to have lost his magic touch. Needless commercial elements like multiple songs and predictable action sequences makes it a tedious watch.
Karna( GV Prakash) is a small time thief in Kaveri Nagar where Chennai’s original race from slums are relocated. Along with his friend Rocky (Nandan Ram), a drug peddler, he leads a happy life and reunite with their childhood friend Kalai (Pasanga Paandi), a bright student who just got released from Juvenile Detention Center.
The first half of the film mostly revolves around the lives of these three characters and their rivalry with the opposite gang. We also get to see a greedy corrupt cop Perumal (Ravi Maria) who uses these petty criminals to earn some additional money! The second half is all about how Karna takes revenge for the personal losses of his dear ones.
Performance wise, GV Prakash Kumar has given his best. Nandan Ram and Paandi have also done a good job. While Radhika, Abarnathi, and Ravi Mariya are adequate. The problem with the film is the poor execution of Vasanthabalan. We are unable to believe that an award-winning film of his stature is badly let down by a weak narration and characters do not register..
Technically, GV Prakash’s background score is effective while the songs are average. Ganesh Chandra’s cinematography is passable and the stunts in the intermission are impressive.
Overall, Jail has a good message but the output and presentation is not up to the mark!
